i have been away for this forum for quite awhile because of busy business schedule but i visit from time to time to browse over news and stuff. And i have not made any new thread for quite a long while.

Now it was about 6mos ago that i get to have a disturbing finding and experienced the broken hinges of my m11x. it was really hard for my part because i lived in philippines and availability of parts in dell service center here is scarce.

but i was thinking that the hinge problem is not really a wear and tear problem but a serious design flaw... and i really think that dell should recall this unit for possible substantial change and not just a part replacement. i hope we can make it sure that they dell people should be held responsible for this flaw because i really love my m11x and here comes a hardware design flaw is ruining the pleasure of using the power in portability factor of our m11x.

i hope this would create a concrete solution to our hinge problem.

i will be taking pics when i will repair again my hinges. 6months ago, i make a do it yourself repair and bond the cover latch and hinges with a steel type devcon epoxy. well it didnt hold much longer and i will begin to painstakingly put my m11x apart again and bond the hinges again solidly. hoping it will hold a little longer.

for comparison, the HP mini of my wife was many times fall on the ground but the hinges and the laptop itself can hold the impact. the hinges of the HP mini are doing great even its almost a 2years old laptop already.

It's been established that it doesn't necessarily take any appreciable wear and tear for the plastic to give out.

The pessimist in me knows that the chances of their being a recall for the M11x is pretty much zero. Dell isn't going to allow that to happen. They're sticking to the stance that this is not a widespread issue and that warranty repairs are all we're entitled to. The more this issue hangs out there with no concrete evidence of a fix or any official word from Dell on the matter, the more we're forced into the position of extending our warranty. I'll be waiting for as long as I can up to the point where my warranty is about to expire so that I can determine whether or not Dell or someone like Squaretrade is going to get my money.

How long had you owned the R1 before your hinges broke?

I hate to jinx myself as my m11x is currently being shipped to me (haven't even unboxed it yet! ), but reading about all of these hinge issues really is alarming.

I would say the best way to get this done is to have one person be the organizer and have that person receive hand written and/or signed letters by m11x owners with said problem with documented proof (pictures & serial #'s ? ). If you try to do an "e-petition" as they're called, I could see that easily being ignored as frivolous since anyone can "sign" them.

    just my .02.

It's honestly random poor build quality i think. My wife is a lot more rough with her m11x compared to how i treat mine and her's is still perfect like its the first time you've opened it. Mine is on hinge #2,and clicking.

it only took me 2mos or 3mos i guess after i got my m11x and the hinges got wobbly then i stand corrected it was 4months ago did i bond the hinges of my m11x. its been hard for me to ask for warranty because i am here in the philippines... but the point why i am addressing this because a design flaw will always be a design flaw. the hinges will eventually crack by simply making a constant close and open of the cover. that is why eventually when there would be an expiration of warranty, the user will be practically exposed to a constant repairs of the hinges... i doubt if there is none for those who have the m11x r1 would notice this problem now.

I'm on week #2 here and it's holding up so far (keeping my fingers crossed). I open and close this thing about 10+ times a day, it goes everywhere with me. Lets see how many more weeks I can make it! I like my screen, I don't want a new one :( Especially one installed by a contractor that probably doesn't fully know what s/he is doing.

At his point I'm inclined to agree that it's more of a hit or miss affair than something that's guaranteed to impact everyone.

Honestly, I really believe that the only way you could ever get Dell to act on this is to vote with your dollars. In other words, don't buy this product. In their minds, if people are still willing to buy the product AND get the extended warranty because of this issue, then why change anything? But if they see that the issue is impacting sales, they might be more inclined to take it seriously.

    A recall is unlikely.

The only reason they would issue a recall is if it is cheaper to issue a recall, than to continue to repair problems under warranty. Right now, it is cheaper for Dell to just repair the problems. Therefore, they will not issue a recall.
