M11x Problem/Technical Question thread for New Owners

Guys. I need your help

I just recently reinstalled the OS of my newly aquired m11xR3, but cannot seem to find the driver for the 'High Definition Audio Device'. I have already installed all known drivers....none seemed to get rid of the exclamation mark in the device manager. This is the only missing driver in my system.

Please help.

when you install the intel display driver it usually adds an intel audio driver....but that's for the R2.

EDIT: maybe some who also has an R3 could take a screenshot and share it.

 

My m11x R1 beeps/chirps randomly. I would definitely describe it more as a chirp but I assume it's technically a "beep" It's not constant and occurs randomly. I don't hear much of a pattern, as in 3 in a row or anything of the sort. Any ideas? Thanks!

 

My touchpad is being disabled when I don't have any mice/controller attached to it. I happened to install MotionInJoy, 2 weeks ago, to enable use of a wired PS3 controller might this be the cause?

Any fixes so that I'm able to still use the PS3 controller?

 

My issue with my m11x r2 i5 has the newest installed nvidia drivers. When i try and play Mount and Blade: Warband i play it perfect for 20min then it shuts down my whole computer without any warning!!! It only happens when i play this game.

I have my computer connected to a monitor if that helps with anything. Any help would be appreciated

 

Monitor your temperatures, try different drivers. 260.99 is a relatively stable across the board. Try it without it connected to an external monitor.

All about experimentation to figure out what's wrong.

 

Also remember that for nvidia problems is the other topic. In the last 2 pages is wrote down a similar problem with solution.

PD: I'm sure that is for temperature, put a cooling pad and you will se how it works!!

I have a M11x R1 and the problem is I can use the internal mic. It's not showing up in anything. I've reinstalled Command Center but that didn't work. I've tried searching for new hardware and that doesn't work either. I checked dell's website for a mic driver and nothing there either. The webcam works just no mic. Any ideas?

Hi Everyone,
I just noticed this issue with my R2.

Whenever I close the lid and reopen, or put the computer in sleep mode, I get 5 pixelated columns on the screen that do not go away until I open a program/browser. Same issue with different wallpaper, and also after a reset.

Quick question. I did a clean windows install on my m11xr1 and I want to install touchpad drivers that support dual touch. Now I know I can install the newest synaptics drivers which will do that, but is there possibly an older revision I can download that only had two finger scroll?

The reason I ask is because after I installed the newest one before my clean install, even when I disabled the rotate option, it would still come up if I moved my fingers on the touchpad close to it. This was very annoying when trying to play a game or just browse around the desktop having the rotate icon pop up and not being able to actually use my mouse until I lifted off and tried again.

 

Just disable the touchpad when an external optical device is attached, or decrease the sensitivity in the CommandCenter

 

I was actually using the touchpad to play somethings with, and the rotate would happen in games and out of games if I touched too close to the direction even after I disabled that function. I'll just put the newer one on I guess and just buy a mouse to use or try not to make that gesture.

 

You can also disable the gesture

Hi everyone. I'm using an M11XR1 that I got sometime last April and it was doing well until recently. Games (the more graphic-intensive ones, most FPSes) run fine for a while and then start to stutter at a fraction of the original framerate. Then it goes back to normal, and after some more time it stutters again. I have checked using GPU-Z that this is not throttling. Searches on the forums related to this have not turned up anything or at most unanswered queries.

I am running on 4Gb of RAM, the GPU is a GT 335M, using a 64bit system and the processor is an Intel U4100 at 1.3GHz. Can anyone offer any help?

 

Anyone know if the battery is covered the full length of your warranty, or if its just the first year.

I have a 2 year warranty and my battery is giving me about a hour of run time now.

 

pretty sure battery is only ever covered for a year

 

I'd second that - battery only one year usually - but doesn't hurt to check with customer service if you can't find your original invoice

 

Hey everyone,

I got an M11XR2 sometime in April, I did the screen hinge replacement just in case, but now I've come across an incredibly annoying problem.

My wireless connection is acting very strange- it connects to any wireless network fine, as long as it's within about 3m from the router. As soon as I get any further, I can view the network name, with the signal strength showing 3-5 bars, and irrespective of the strength, it refuses to connect to the network.

I've already tried reinstalling the wireless drivers from the Dell website, but that's not fixed the problem.

 

hi i have recently bought an Alienware m11x r3 and when i input the service tag in the dell website it says service tag not found. does anyone also have this problem?

I have the same issue. Dell has replaced DIMMS, Heat Sink, power Button. hinges, speakers, and motherboard. On the phone with them now as they tell me it is a Windows 7 issue...

 

I've had this very problem for over a month after a series of Windows updates. Waiting for another update to fix it. Meanwhile, it's slightly annoying but doesn't seem to be a serious issue, I just alt-ctrl-del, and then esc.

 

Nobody's had the wireless issue I mentioned above? :\

 

I don't know about it being a windows issue since mine did it out of the box. I've done all incremental updates from the end of April. I even went from Home Premium to a clean install of Professional. Dell is sending me out a replacement laptop after 3 visits from techs to replace various parts...

 

Here's a weird bug I noticed on my R3:

I got the logitech anywhere MX mouse. When I use the mini receiver in the USB 2.0 port, the range at which I can use the mouse is just 2 feet. Terrible.

But when I switch it over to the 3.0 port, works perfectly at 7 feet.

Anyone else have this issue?

 

Interesting ... when did you get your M11x? Have you noticed anything more serious beyond temporarily having 5 fuzzy columns?

 

Hi currently my ram is at 6gb and i was thinking to upgrade it to 8gb. my questions are:
1. does the dual channel have significant performance boost?
2. does the 6gb ram support dual channel?
3. if not what stick do i need to buy in order to use the dual channel? (specs of the 4gb ram additional)

I go the machine at the end of April. The columns have gotten larger, flicker, and happen more consistently. Also the task bar doesn't seem to refresh as it used to, so the streaks sometime remain there.

 

Certainly sounds serious if streaks persist after refreshing the whole screen e.g. with ctrl-alt-del.

However, coincidence perhaps, but around late April 2011 was when I first noticed it, so in terms of potentially being software issue, yours may have already had the culprit windows update at the factory.

Anyway look forward to anyone who's had this issue and found a solution.

 

Hey, I'm due to receive my m11x R1 today. It was cheap and I'm not looking for the world's best performance, but I still have a few questions.

1. Is there any downside to overclocking the SU7300 to 1.73Ghz straight away? I plan on switching it up in the BIOS and just leaving it like that forever, but obviously won't if there are drawbacks.

2. Is it worth switching between graphics cards all the time? 75%+ of the usage of this laptop will be gaming whilst plugged in, can I just leave it on the 335M permanently? I understand it will use more power...

3. Is there much graphics optimisation that needs to be done, or is it going to be plug and play?

4. Will it have the latest drivers installed?

I am a total noob here so be kind! I got my R3 core i7 a few weeks ago and it started off all well. Recently though I seem to be encountering lots of freezes with absolutely no response to any input. This had happened once or twice before but is now getting fairly frequent. There seems to be no discernable pattern as to when it happens- it kinda just happens. Has anyone come across anything similar?

Does anyone have a slight pinkish tint on the left side of the lcd??

On a white background I can see a small difference between the left and the right side, it doesn't bother me that much... I just wanted to find out if it's common

 

About a month ago, I had a few questions about hybrid drives. Well, the only one that I know about is the Seagate Momentus XT. Before I buy it, I want to know, how bad are the reliability issues I keep hearing about? I go online and I hear that everyone either has one that fails in a few days to failure in a few months.

 

People don't seem to get many answers in here - looks like you've got to go get help in the other threads available.
I don't have any answers for the issues on p74, other than that you'll only get dual channel with matching ram, so need 2x4GB.

Wanted to check in and confirm that the R3 I got a week and a half ago has the wavy keyboard with the depression in the middle. Haven't got around to a fix. Been sick and flat out with work, hardly played with my new toy at all

 

I'm no expert by any means however like you I couldn't resist purchasing one of these because they were pretty cheap. I just received mine yesterday and its been pretty awesome and as I would expect.


There shouldn't be any downside in Overclocking the CPU in the BIOS. All good to try and test out when ever you like.

In terms of switching from 335m graphics to Intel GPU you can easily accomplish this by using the green boomerang icon which is located in the bottom taskbar tray next to the clock. I use it all the time. It's great. When ever you like you can just switch between GPUs. So yeh you can leave it on Discrete 335m GPU all the time if you like. Then switch it to save power GPU mode if you need to ever travel with it.

In terms of graphics optimisation it should be plug and play. However you can download the latest GPU drivers from the dell support webpage. I did so last night and installed them. Working great so far.

Just bought an M11x R3, and installed a Vertex 3 120GB. Got Win7 x64 Pro loaded but am having a few game issues.

GTA 4 says I only have 59MB of ram. I've read that the game isn't recognizing the video driver. Portal 2 runs maxed at 60-90fps, so I'm thinking that since it's a new game game compared to gta4 its not having this issue. Anyone get this game working?

I have all the newest drivers and A02 bios. The driver says that the nvidia gpu IS switching on for gtaiv.exe.

The only other game I have installed is Killing Floor, which only runs at medium settings at best. I would think this computer could run the UT2004 engine a little better.

Push fn+f6
In the bottom right corner by the clock is a little arrow thing, click it and it will bring up a little menu. If there are 2 green sideways arrows >> then the graphics card is on, if there is only 1 arrow > then the card is off.

 

I tried that and I don't see any arrows at all... Please help.

so i got the m11xr3 and im just updating all the windows software etc. anyways ive done a reboot and now it wont connect to the network.

Even though the network cable is plugged in and active it just keeps bringing up all the wirless options to connect to . I've enabled and disabled the LAN adaptor no luck , rebooted. Also turned off the wireless and unplugged and re-plugged the network cable i can see when I unplug the cable it picks it up fine.

any suggestions?

 

Have you installed the newest drivers? If so, they are buggy for some people. Try to find the last version of the graphics drivers and install them.

I cant install the newest drivers on any of my drives that have SP1 on them, but the drivers work fine on my drive that doesnt have SP1 on it.

Ok, I downloaded the driver. So now do I just press FN+F6 to change drivers? Because I tried that and it didn't do anything. Am I doing something wrong?

Well, lucky me, I turned it off but now I cant turn it back on... This is terrible, how do I turn it back on? (It wont let me into nvidia because I'm not using a nvidia card because I turned it off.)
