Download WhoCrashed and press the Analyze button, that should give you some info on your last BSODs.

Thanks. It actually happens when the screen is a few degrees past 90, not 45 as I originally thought. They are coming in tomorrow to replace the screen... it's a bit extreme, but as long as they fix the issue.

Thanks for confirming the issue. Can't wait for next upgrade ... once all's good again, guess there's probably no point upgrading further, there's only so much you can squeeze out of an old card eh?

I find it strange that we happen to just two people and the rest seem to fare well.

If we wait for the next nvidia driver dell approved we can sit and wait ...

There must be some kind of solution

I'm guessing many are either not bothering to upgrade so never got the issue, or otherwise use the solution you've employed.

Hi , i just bought a M11x and a 500gb hard drive separatley. How do i get everything installed on this drive ? Is there a way to move everything installed on the 320gb drive to the 500gb one ? I heard about a software called Acronis, is it good for what i want to do , and how does it work, can i copy the whole partition from the 320gb drive ?

Or do i have to install everything again. I also got the X-Fi software, and don't know how to get it , if it comes on a cd, the laptop hasn't arrived yet.

    Thanks

I used Norton Ghost to move everything from my HDD to my SSD, You need both the software and a SATA to USB cable . Here is a link to both software and cable needed to copy HDD:

Amazon.com: Apricorn SATA Wire Notebook Hard Drive Upgrade Kit ASW-USB-25 (White): Electronics

On the other hand, if you have the OS and Driver Cds that came with your M11x you can do a fresh instal if you have and external Cd drive. Also if you do a fresh instal, copy the Alienware folder from your programs, because Command Center is not on the drivers Cd.

Alternatively can i connect the original drive to my desktop, make the image then connect the new one and copy the image on it, and then put it in the laptop ?

Hey guys I'm having a technical issue with my laptop. Or I guess a performance issue. For some reason my fps are awful on starcraft 2 on my r3. I overlapped some drivers could that be the problem?

So I ran BF3 with ThrottleStop on. I played for a good 30 minutes and took a look at ThrottleStop to see my max temp was 83 Celsius! Do you think this is accurate? Wouldn't it have crashed if that was the case?

    It shouldn't crash.

Those temps are actually fairly low for laptop components. Most Cpu's and Gpu's are capable of reaching 100 degrees celsius before taking damage.

So 80's shouldn't cause any damage? I haven't had a gaming laptop in awhile so I'm just a little worried. I guess my desktop running at 30 Celsius max has spoiled me!

It shouldn't do any harm. Most gaming laptops run pretty warm compared to desktops. My 485m hits 86 degrees while playing crysis 2.

I have an Alienware M11x and when i go to my devices and had my computer search for new driver versions on mt GT 540M it didnt bring anything up, but when i go to the geforce site it says i have a new version to install. At first I had to install one from October 14th then checked the site again and had to install one from October 24th. However the next time i checked it gave me the same thing, saying i still hadnt installed that version. I'm manually installing the 290.53 version and seeing if that works now.

Hi, I bought a new monitor so that I can connect the m11x to it via hdmi, but when I do, some weird things happen.
The worse one of all, is that it automatically switches to the discrete graphics. Is there a way of stopping that?
Any help would be appreciate it.

Is there a way to stop it? It smashes my battery.
Another annoyance is that when I connect my speakers to the monitor, the sound comes from the monitors build in speaker. But that's something for another thread I think.

Not really, the hdmi is connected to the nvidia card... but that brings up a question, if you are plugged into a external monitor, you must be with in a few feet of a wall plug, why not plug in your computer?

Just had my M11 delivered by the nice UPS man. Yay.

First thought that struck me is the video's on Youtube just really don't do the size of the unit justice, it's tiny, but perfectly formed. Loving it so far.

Was interesting to watch the package on UPS's site as it went from place to place. If nothing else it's a well-travelled laptop. Shanghai-Dubai-Germany-Me!

Hello , is there any way too tell on which video card your M11X R3 currently running? I installed the last video card driver on World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies | NVIDIA. I am not sure if i readed good. Not all nvidia driver switch video card?

I just want to make sure it use INTEL for normal use and Nvidia for games.

Hey, I was just wondering something. Can the M11xR3 boot from USB? I've been through the BIOS and I've seen no mention of USB booting anywhere at all nor have I seen any sort of External Disc Drive in the BIOS.

So can you boot from USB?

Also, Would you be able to boot from an SD Card? I know some computers can.

    This can be tested easy

I did test with USB stick it work. So Usb HDD , Usb DVD-Rom , USB FLOPPY will work too.
The option won't appear if nothing plugged in USB. I have'nt try with SD card but it probably work too

Thanks for answering my question. Will test SD Card booting later

Hey guys, I kind of have a weird startup issue with my M11x. When I boot up, it takes about 3+ minutes from boot to desktop, and some programs (like Intel RST) start up with errors.

When I restart, though, it takes like 45 seconds from boot to desktop, and all programs start up fine.

Does anyone else have the problem of super slow boot ups but really fast restarts? I have no idea why this is happening.

    First M11x R1 R2 R3? Do you have SSD?

Second. Is it slow before windows7 logo appear or only after?
You could try to boot in safe mode too see if it boot faster

It look like a SOFTWARE problem, probably a clean up/reimage will fix this.
Maybe 1 software take a while to load IE Anti-Virus

If it take a while to load before the windows logo it could be something else. HDD take a while to detect or maybe bios config... Memory count at start lol

    I hope it help

I'm using the R2 and I'm using the stock hard drive.

It's slow after the Windows 7 logo appears. There's a black screen for a while before the login screen.

Booting in safe mode is also really slow. But if I restart and then boot in safe mode, it's fast.

I have no idea what's wrong. Is it possible it's a hardware problem? It seems like I boot up much faster when there's already power going through the hard drive.

It could be a registry error, I would run a registry error detecting program (I use AVG premium). Also go into the MS config and turn off the windows boot animation to see if that helps.

CCleaner seems fine, so does the AVG scan. A disk check showed a whole bunch of bad sectors though, so I guess that's bad luck for me. Thanks for your help, though!

    Hi to all forumers...

    i'm a newbie here...

i have a question...it may sound silly but i need to be sure...

can M11x be started without its hard disk?...

    i mean...usually if u startup a notebook/laptop/PC without its hard disk...a BIOS screen/info will appeared rite?...

but in my case...i'm trying to startup M11x without its hard disk but nothing appear...just a blank screen but i can hear its fan running...the keyboard illuminate but when i pressed any button...a 'BEEP' sound will be heard

so...if its not to much to ask...i would really appreciate if somebody here try to start his/her M11x without hard disk and please tell me what happen then...thanks :)

    Hello, avalancer, welcome to NBR.

To access BIOS menu you need to press the F2 key (repeatedly just to make sure) after the alien head when you power on your laptop.

before i change my display unit...which is costly for me :)...i want to clarify this matter first...thanks :)

Yes, the M11x can be started without a HDD inside and have visual feedback.
Right after you turn it on, you should see the alien head, pressing F2 will take you to the BIOS menu.

If you're not sure whether it's really your screen, i would plug an external monitor and see if there'll be any output on that.

I've been having issues lately with my m11x r2 freezing randomly while playing games (Specifically DotA, HoN, Dungeon Defenders). It happens more often when I'm on skype at the same time talking with friends; The internet disconnects for a few seconds then everything freezes, and the only way out is to hold down the power button for a reset. I ran memtest86 as well as the hardware diagnostics and everything passed. I also disabled the overclock and reinstalled all the recommended dell drivers but the issue still persists =/

Any help? I'm also planning on calling Dell support tomorrow.

I dont think the m11x outputs to a external display till its all the way turned on.

At least mine doesnt since it starts up with the intel chip, then when in windows it will switch over to the nvidia chip.

Can you elaborate more? Did this just happen or were there other problems? Does the screen stay completely off or is the backlight on? Do you see a _ sign in the upper left hand corner of the screen? Does it make all the familiar boot sounds and windows login sounds? Please give us the details and we may be able to help.

    Hey there,

New guy here, so im hoping you guys can really go easy on me here. After reading several posts it seems like my issues clearly will seem like nothing to you guys.

Ive had my M11x R2 for about 1 1/2 years now. Lately its been running rather slowly for some reason. SC2 settings need to be dialed down. Playing Civ V is choppy. Even Left 4 Dead 2 can be painful to watch. I dont know exactly the reason behind it. Sometimes it seems it dependent on my internet connection. My service at my home is awful, but at school, it runs great, so games on steam like Civ and L4D run great. But it pains me to see how i spent so much money on the damn thing seeing 1. how inconsistent it is and 2. that you guys are able to run graphically intensive games like Shogun 2 and FO3 without much of issue, when truth be told, im simply just trying to run a couple of games that Blizzard makes.

Ill provide you guys with all the specs and as much info as possible, but I would honestly love for you guys to help me optimize this thing. And just to prove to you how lost i am in this, the only specs i could really pick up for you guys is through the dxdiag.exe function. goes to show you how in over my head with this stuff i am :/

    M11x R2
    NVidia 335 GT
    Intel Core i7 U 640 @ 1.20Ghz(4 CPUs) ~1.2Ghz
    SSD PM 800 2.5" 258GB
    4GB Ram

If you show me how to get the rest of the info i will be more than happy to oblige.

    Thanks so much!
