There is an adapter cable you can buy to work with a normal monitor. You can buy ones for dvi or vga.
    here is an example.

    Nice find, thanks a bunch!

I already have a DVI/VGA adapter, as my former computer had DVI outputs and I bought my monitor thinking it had a DVI input, doh'.

Will it function if I do this setup:

    M11x>Displayport>Displayport/DVI adapter>DVI/VGA adapter>VGA Input for monitor

    Thanks again :)

It should work just fine. I have never used a cable to do a three way conversion like that though.

I would recomend if your going to buy an adapter buy one that works with VGA so you dont have to do a three way switch-o-roo lol. If you have all the neccessary adapters already then great!

Here is the amazon page with Display port to VGA converters, and they are pretty cheap. I just decided to buy the DVI version lol.

Hope this helps. Any more questions I will be checking up on this hourly all day and weekend.

Just so you know, if you plan on updating your monitor anytime soon and want to get full use of the DVI port, you will need another adapter for that. But the majority of monitors today come with one VGA and one DVI, some also have HDMI now.
    Just something to think about.

Guys, is there any problem with your stock wifi card? Model: 1520 mini something i think.
Just got m11x r2 for 5th days and now i found that when i connect to my home wifi, if within 2 meters away, it become really hard to load pages on IE/Mozilla. If I pull a bit nearer to my router, it will somehow resume...
Not sure is it wifi card problem but when i tried Starcraft 2 Multiplayer, it plays fine and smooth without any problem. That's really weird >.<

Yah that does sound really odd. I have not had that problem yet, was able to connect with no problem with my router. I have a D-Link DIR-601. Do you think it is a problem with the router or even the placement of the rotuer? How do other wifi devices fair with your wifi? The SC2 part really gets me though.... runs fine when playing. Firewall?

@Going Viral, there's a couple lines in an INF file you have to edit for the nVidia drivers to work with the m11x. Search for those in the forum, or you can just use Dell's drivers.

I still have the problem where shutting the lid doesn't put the laptop to sleep. The screen will go dark but the keys will remain illuminated, and I cannot wake the machine up without force-shutting it down. I've installed 257.30 from Dell, disabled AlienFusion, and set power options to default. It worked fine briefly after changing those settings, but now it's back to normal. Does anyone know a solution?

Hi guys, I got my m11x r2 one month ago. It works fine at the beginning, however starts to crash occasionally. I tried all the driver and still can't figure it out. Also sometimes it popes up wireless card connection error and at the same time the color of the task bar becomes weird, I mean no more transparent.
    Any suggestions?

I think I find the problem. It is the memory. I run the diagnosis in the machine and it keeps telling errors when checking the memory. I suppose I need to contact dell to solve this problem. Do they have emails? Or I need to call them?

First thing you might try is to re-seat your memory modules.

The RAM is one of the easiest parts to upgrade / change as it's the most accessible component. Several people also upgraded their HD manually and that is usually fairly easy as well.

As for the actual performance of the laptop i suggest you browse around the m11x forum and look up benchmarks, game performance etc to see if it fits your needs.

I need some help here. I can't get AlienFusion to work. I set it on Power Savings and set the AlienFX to shut off when on battery. However, I'm on battery right now and my lights are still on.

That bottom fan is intake. The exhaust (blow air out) is the vent across the back of the machine.

Just got my M11x. The hinges are fine but the overall build quality is not very good. I wish I could post some pics of the gaps between the chassis and lcd screen in the top corners. More gaps down by the lights on the front. And the scratches on the chassis look like somebody used a small screwdriver to get the lcd screen in place. Fine. Whatever. So I turn it on for the first time, enable the Breed theme, it does some facial recognition stuff then just a black screen with a blue swirling cicle for about 40 minutes. I called tech support, which was a joke. After an hour I finally got onto Windows but every other thing I try to do freezes the computer or causes a program to "not respond". The worst is when I go to Control Panel, no matter what I do (click the X to exit, click on a link) the Control Panel goes into "not responding". Any ideas on what's going on?

I've been noticing some pretty constant explorer freezing too to be honest. Either when running IE, file explorer or the control panel as above.

Windows7 pleasantly tells me it's "Not Responding"" and I can kill it and restart explorer.exe without the loss of any other GUI programs.

I've dropped using IE for the past 4 hours and gone with Chrome and have yet to experience another explorer.exe hang.

EDIT - Well since binning IE as my default web explorer (and using Chrome) I have not experienced any of the crashing symptoms as above. Interesting.

I went to sleep last night and my battery meter was showing 5 hours 12 min of battery remaining. I wake up today, turn it on and the meter shows 4 hours 2 minutes. I can't imagine the battery drained by over 1 hour overnight with the machine being turned off. This laptop is the so disappointing to me so far, at least it stopped freezing.

Anyone know what Dell's return policy is? Do I have 30 days to get a full refund and will they pay for the cost of shipping back since I got a unit with at least 5 defects? If I return it I do not plan on purchasing another, not sure if that matters. Thanks.

Haha now I got 3 hour 1 min remaining... Okay so now one minute later it says 5 hours 44 min. , I have been looking at the cpu and ram usage, it has stayed the same so it's not like something was running in the background that gave me false low battery times...I updated my nvidia driver to 257.30 this morning so if last night's 5 hr 12 min was correct, and today's 5 hr 44 min with new driver is correct, then the driver helped a little. My command center is up to date.

On a side note, does anyone think Dell is just taking these M11xR2s out of the Dell Outlet, slapping our personalized name tags onto them then selling to us as if they are new? I finally came to this conclusion after inspecting the multitude of assembly flaws on this thing, to me, it seems like either a refurb/used model or one that someone slapped together in two seconds flat, the pieces simply don't line up or fit together properly. I cant stand how the lighted keyboard is useless and looks tacky because the lights do not shine thru evenly. For the price we payed and the average specs on this thing I expected better.

Wow, my EDD is 08/23 on my R2. The same could be said for just about any device I guess if you look hard enough... but all these issues really have my worried. I hope this doesnt become one of those "I really wanted to love it but couldnt" devices.

It's such a shame because when the lid is closed, this thing looks beautiful, the problem starts the instant I open the lid. Everything looks cheap and does not fit together properly. I showed it to an IT guy at work and the very first thing he did was put his ear to the hinge, he opened and closed it a few times and just gave me this look like "why would anyone buy this?" (note: this guy had no idea these laptops have a hinge issue, it was THAT obvious to him just by glancing at the design/materials used)

I have scoped out at least two different M11xR1's at BB and I never noticed all the flaws that mine has. I don't get the point of this laptop, the battery life is barely better than an Envy14 with no Optimus and a real i-core (not so portable) and it's not so great at gaming. Maybe I just got a bad one. Whatever. The Dell manager guy is supposed to call me back soon.

I'm guessing that you are overclocked? Turn it off or knock it back a few notches. I've seen this on most systems if overclocked to max or near max.

Pics of top of lid/lcd panel (mine came with the Samsung panel, perhaps that matters, maybe they are slightly wider and do not fit correctly) Anyways, you can see the gouges/scratches and even a gap which reveals the plastic tabs of the lcd panel which hold it into place. You can also see me gently pushing down on the top piece of plastic to seal the gap. Unfortunately, only that one gouge would photograph but take my word for it, there is more than just that one.

    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i198/xninjagrrl/P1000149.jpg

    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i198/xninjagrrl/P1000159.jpg

    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i198/xninjagrrl/P1000160.jpg

Pics of gaps at corners of lcd panel/lid. Notice how the top piece of plastic is kind of cut at an angle but the piece of plastic along the side is straight, how would these two pieces ever line up correctly? I could push on this all day long and the pieces of plastic do not match up. I am at a loss.

    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i198/xninjagrrl/P1000146.jpg

    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i198/xninjagrrl/P1000145.jpg

Pics of gaps/case separation near bottom lights, notice how you can see red light shining thru the gap, it is not like on the left side. Again if I push on the plastic it does not line up, it's like something internal was not installed correctly, may be why my keyboard is warped:

    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i198/xninjagrrl/P1000157.jpg

    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i198/xninjagrrl/P1000156.jpg

What the bottom lights should look like (i guess)

    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i198/xninjagrrl/P1000165.jpg

Pic of blocked vents (this may be normal but it looks cheap and tacky since its not even)

    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i198/xninjagrrl/P1000162.jpg

Pic of uneven keyboard lighting (Im guessing this is "normal", which is sad, part of the premium we pay for with AW is to get nice looking lights). The bottom, left CONTROL key is insanely bright compared to the other keys and the SPACE key is only partially lit up, it sort of photographed in this pic:

    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i198/xninjagrrl/P1000167.jpg

I could not really photograph the keyboard warping, you can only really see it from certain angles and it's something you can feel alot easier than see.

Sorry but I could not get the pics into this post so you are stuck clicking on links, I suck, I know.
Dell just offered me a full refund, including return shipping or I can get an exchange. He made it sound like I could keep the one I have until I get the new laptop, then send this one back. Would Dell be so cool?

"Pics of gaps at corners of lcd panel/lid"
Mine has a gap up at each of the top corners, but the gap is even between the top and sides. Yours, in comparison, looks like someone put a screwdriver in their and pried it.

"Pics of gaps/case separation near bottom lights:"
Ouch. I remember someone else posting pics like that within the last few weeks. I believe he also called tech support, and the person who came out to fix it said it wasn't put together right.

"What the bottom lights should look like (i guess)"
Looks mostly right, except the semi-transparent material they use to smooth the light (because it originates from a single LED) looks like it was cut too short so that the full amount of light comes out around the edges. That's not right.

"Pic of blocked vents (this may be normal but it looks cheap and tacky since its not even)"
It is somewhat normal in that most (every?) comes with that tape showing, but mine looks more even (though isn't entirely) and doesn't block nearly as much of the vents. Slickie88 posted pics of his recently complaining about the same thing, and I think yours is worse.

All in all, you're definitely right not to be happy IMO. The keyboard warp and uneven lighting are the only things you mention that are common to every M11x.

I don't know, is this considered nit-picking on my part? I feel like I spent a grand on a $1350 laptop and got something that arrived falling apart. I realize everything can't be a Mac but the quality control here is ridiculous imo.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but...

I just received my m11x today. It's great, but the only complaint is that the webcam seems to not be working.

Within the pre-installed YouCam it is functional, but within other applications it doesn't work. I enable it, but it gives me this screen.

I can't get AlienFusion to work. I set it on Power Savings and set the AlienFX to shut off when on battery. However, I'm on battery right now and my lights are still on. Thanks for any help.

    My computer: M11x R2

What I'm trying to do: Turn a 22" LCD VGA monitor into a second screen, or better yet, a duplicate screen so I can use my Saitek Eclipse II keyboard for typing college papers. I am using a display port to VGA adapter to bridge.

Roadblocks I hit: Multiple monitors, extend, and desktop on 1 screen did nothing except make a really weird projection.

For example, the multiple monitors option makes the M11x screen smaller by about an inch on each vertical axis, and the VGA monitor about an inch too wide on each vertical axis.

If possible, I want to retain the highest possible resolution. Thanks!

Nitpicking, perhaps, or not. You see faults that I know that I could have missed or let pass. You do not accept it and hopefully the rest of us will get /even/ better quality because of people like you. Be it this machine or some other machine.

And with the pics provided I will discovered these/similar, if there are any, errors when I get the computer not a month or a year later.

And also writing it up in a good fashion.

Not sure what solved the problem, but crisis averted :)

This laptop continues to exceed my expectations of what it can do with what it has :D

Argh ... i just found out that the right side speaker's light a bit faulty >.<
Normally i will put red or green color but today i dunno why, i changed to orange and then i found that the right side color is not original orange but is yellow orange + green... when i change to yellow, it will become blue yellow...
If i call dell support, will they come and replace juz for this ? thanks.

Hey my battery meter on the underside of my new M11x R2 doesn't lit up when off battery, on battery or when the laptop is turned off. Anyone know how to turn it on?

    Thanks!
