Both of those are the old design.

But, its not the hinges that are faulty, The parts that the hinges mount to the lcd are weak and break.

Replacing the hinge wont do anything, you have to replace the lcd mount (whole lcd assembly)

Here is a picture you can see that the mounts ripped right out of the lcd housing.

Awww lame. Is there anyway to repair it by parts or is it only through Dell?
My warranty expired a month before my hinge started messing up so i'm out of luck.

iirc R1 hinges can still be done even when warranty has expired.

A quick phone call to Dell should confirm this.

    Regards.

Yep, I had mine replaced more than a year out of warranty. They sent me a box and i had to mail it off. Took a couple of weeks to completely turn around i believe.

They will replace it once out of warranty as it is a design flaw on their part. No in-home repairs though, gotta send it in.

Good to know. Thanks for the clarifications guys. It's gonna suck not having it for a few weeks again. I just changed the fan today as the original one died on me a few weeks back. China shipping took foooreeeeeeeever too.
Oh well, at least i'll have a new hinge.

    Hi there,

Please understand that I dont want to hijack the thread, I just dont want to creat another 1, that's a waste.

I just want to ask if I could have mine replaced also even when mine is not broken (yet!?!) If so, what part of the LCD should I send them?

    Thanks in advance :)

Yes i believe you can have them fix it, but you need to send in the entire laptop. The entire lid has to be replaced along with the hinges and mounts.

Oops! Sadly I can not live without it now, and mine is not actually broken yet so... I guess I'll just stay with it and hope for the best (aka unbreakable haha)
