Nvidia 285.38 + Intel 2413
These drivers are for the M11x R1 ONLY, these will not work if you have an R2 or R3.
If your processor is NOT a SU4100 or SU7300 then you are not using an R1, this is not for you.
OPTIMUS SECTION
Pros : Automatic switching on-the-fly
NVIDIA enters a low-power, low clock state while not in use.
Cons : Still not as power efficient as HYBRID mode wherein the NVIDIA gpu powers off completely.
Currently testing :
- An even lower power state for the NVIDIA Gpu while it is not in use. Need further testing if this has any adverse effects.
Prerequisites:
1. Graphics mode in BIOS must be : Switchable
2. Uninstall previous NVIDIA and INTEL video drivers
Instructions :
1. Download and install Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver 15.17.17.64.2413 for Windows 7 64bit
2. Download and install Alienware M11x R1 Optimus Beta Driver - 285.38
HYBRID SECTION
Nvidia 285.38
Intel 2413
Progress :
Everything works except when switching from intel to nvidia, only able to switch if i reset every registry setting back to when it was first installed which is a hassle. Will upload the hybrid version once this major issue is ironed out.
Thats about it, if you experience any bugs inform me right away and I will try to fix it.

Up and running. 1st try at removing intel drivers didnt work. 2nd says worked but it reinstalled again on boot even though I had actually selected the driver removal. Odd. 3rd go was fine.
Control pnl is there... looks like what I would expect an optimus setup to be (but never looked before). 3D GPU selection is set on auto. -
I'll try it later , can't download it now.
Btw , i never changed any color settings and now it looks burn , like if white were too white. -
+1 rep!
-
-
It's really random with several reboots / Sleep i made today , sometimes it's ok , sometime it's burn. I'll try to find when my settings are messed up and once they are not ( but i'm still with the old ver' remember , i'll try the new one tonight )
Btw , if you want beta on Hybrid with your fix, i'd be ok ( i don't care about rebooting to switch , the only thing i need is to set Intel for school , and Nvidia @home ) -
VERY VERY Thanks for your work... i will follow this topic 4ever

Ran 3dmark for comparison. Score dropped a little bit but not much. I normally get 64xx every time. Now 62xx. Its ok games might be better or even same.
As I type this there is a slight delay on text so I'll reboot and see if any improvement. Hope its not related.
Odd thing I didn't think about before but isn't a huge shock: plugged in ext mon and fired up 3dmark after test just sitting with results open I unplugged the HDMI cable. Doing so meant my native screen was blank. Had to reconnect and exit 3dmark.
I can tell the GPUs are switching as i see my temps fluctuate! This is good. Also monitoring using the nvidia activity monitor. Battery life is not greatly improved for me but I suspect all my settings are still out of whack from going "max" for testing.
No hangs so far or BSOD so thumbs up on that too. -
Optimus test tools finally in users hands - LaptopVideo2Go Forums
Really useful actually, tells you when the dGPU is on or not, my WHS 2011 launchpad had been incorrectly identified by the NVidia driver as being a game and was forcing the dGPU on the whole time, this app tells you which process running is triggering the switch. One proviso, apparently if you have the diagnostics running whilst gaming some anti-cheat software may flag it and ban you so make sure you close the diagnostics before going logging on to multiplayer. -
maybe better yet, the monitoring app is already included in this....just go to nvidia control panel, in one of the menu items above, you can show status indicator. It will show list of applications using the GPU. After enabling it you can find it in the status bar at the lower right corner of the screen.

Though as much as I want to test a lot of my ideas I have little time as of the moment, managing lots of software development projects about to kick-off first week november, my time is very limited, but i will find the time.
-
The KB delay is gone so must have been a fluke.
Made sure no devices plugged into left USB port, unplugged power, and closed lid. Sleep mode worked fine. Resume ok.
NFSW worked for one session of about 30-45min no driver crash (I would get them once in a while)
Finally (for tonight), my GPU temps fluctuate a lot even though I'm just using browser (no vids). Low 40's to high 40's. Up/Down etc. Seems to stay on the lower side longer but still climbs up eventually. -
So these are the newest drivers out for the R1? Are these "official" or no? Just curious...
How/When do you uninstall the old drivers? I haven't downloaded driver sweeper and I have never used it before either. I have been using the stock 190.xx drivers since I got my R1 a few weeks ago. I was thinking of disabling the Intel card all together until I found this thread.
Can you give me the step by step to installing these if they are in fact the newest/best drivers for the R1?
I haven't been big into PCs until the past couple years. My first PC was a VAIO, and they never made new drivers available so I never had to/could update them. Then I built a desktop myself, and I installed the 280.xx something drivers on my GTX 260 and never updated them, now that PC is gone. So honestly I have no experience installing new drivers on GPUs...especially Alienware's with their quirky problems
Thanks -
No , thoses drivers are not official , and that's what's great
Here's my advices :
- First , download driver sweeper , install it.
- Then , remove all drivers.
- Reboot as Safe mode ( press F8 on boot )
- Launch driver sweeper on safe mode. Analyse and delete every display driver
- Reboot
- Install Intel driver
- Reboot
- Install nvidia driver
- Reboot
You're done for a " perfect install " i think -
Next, I assume I download both sets of drivers BEFORE I do the driver sweeper thing. Just download and save them to my Downloads folder before I start?
Do I reboot in safe mode everytime until they are all installed? -
It's great cause it seems that Dell forgot us R1 user ( or want us to buy R3 ... ) and it's great that RigelKent made some " homemade drivers " for us R1 user , i was waiting this for a loooong time
Just download both driver and driver sweeper where you want. You just have to go to safe mode once , while using driverSweeper.
When you uninstall a driver , there are some " part " of it that never go away , that were driversweeper is usefull. And to do this , you have to be in safe mode. So , uninstall on normal mode , reboot on safe , use driver sweeper while in safe mode( easy to use , select display drivers , clean on " scan and clean " , and it will ask you to reboot , just say yes , and you're ready for your fresh install ... ) -
Do not expect miracles just from newer drivers but often when a "current" card has such a large jump in driver ver there are small improvements. So far I have zero perf gain.
I did this install to see if more stable and to check out the intel drivers. The intel is actually quite capable for daily tasks and there have been a number of improvements
There is a 263.xx official R1 driver btw -
So I just did a fresh install using Catzoo's instructions, and everything seems to work fine...but now Fn+F6 doesn't do anything? Is this what TC means by automatic switching? In that case, is there any way to re-purpose it to do something else?
Also, noticed something odd with HDMI-out - first of all, had to have Windows install drivers after opening up nVidia Control Panel (just plugging it into the TV did nothing)...and then I can't get the TV to display the resolution fullscreen. The TV's resolution is 1920x1200, but if I set that in the Control Panel, it makes the mouse go off the screen, and if I resize it, there's two thin bars (on top and bottom) that I can't get the laptop to recognize as part of the screen or something. With the previous (official) drivers, simply resizing it through the Control Panel gave me the full screen without a problem. I've tried all options and combinations I could think of to no avail. -
Is the res detected correctly? As for Fn+F6 about the only thing useful I can think of is a manual toggle to disable Nvidia GPU for max power savings. Fallout from such a thing might not be worth it though.
-
Just noticed the nvidia panel has two diff places where scaling/aspect/size can be altered... only one has preview along with a host of settings (Adj DT size/pos) compared to another with only edge enhancement (adj vid img)
-
MY issue is that I am unable to use the built in display when HDMI is in use. Had hoped to have both displays available.
-
Pardon me while I spam thread during testing...
Mild Annoyance: hdmi is plugged in. M11x display is deactivated. Opened nvidia control panel to poke around. Removed cable. Screen still not active... had to reconnect and exit nvidia cpanel. Needed to do all this because I also wanted to check intel control panel, which you cannot do while 335 is active. -
And yeah, good point.
Also, can't say I'm having any problems with the M11x display deactivating...I can extend the desktop without a problem, although it may be because I didn't do a clean install of the nVidia drivers and left my previous settings (it automatically did it so the TV appears on top of the screen, whereas by default I believe it'd be on the right of the screen). -
Try connecting your TV to the VGA port and messing with the scaling tools there
-
Solved my issue. This is odd though because it worked flawless prior. In any case changed the config in "windows display settings" to extend display.
-
Does optimus (automatic switching) work well with these drivers?
-
seems to. Only tried NFSW and 3dmark so far.
-
How about automatically switching from Intel to nVidia then nVidia back to Intel? Is it working?
-
So far yes
-
I uninstalled the Intel and nVidia drivers, ran driver sweeper in safe mode, restarted, installed the intel driver in the first post of this topic and now I've got a black screen
-
Installed and so far it seems to be working. Tested it out with Minecraft and the Nvidia GPU succesfully switched on and then off when I closed it. I'll let you know if I run into any bugs, but for the moment, it's working great.
Thank you very much for your excellent work. -
Got it working. For some reason when I installed these drivers a HDMI audio device is disabled in device manager. I curiously enabled it and all hell broke loose.
-
P.S. I've been getting some bluescreens.
-
You Sir are a God among men. I can't wait to try this when I get home from work.
Mostly I'm excited about the intel driver update. Hopefully it will resolve the issue with flash video while overclocked. -
so is this working pretty good for people? what are the current drawbacks?
-
Except on weekends. Maybe I'll install it this Friday afternoon.... -
No lockups or failures yet. Initial sluggishness gone after reboot and been ok since. Can always remove and install OEM drivers
-
Been using it for gaming and general purpose computing, and also for work.
Never encountered any BSODs.
@GNandGS happy that you havent encountered lock-ups or failures
@smsmasters When was your R1 purchased and what BIOS version are you using? Also are you from a Hybrid driver before? Or from discrete? -
Definitely loving it, even if there's no performance difference between it and the older version (haven't noticed any difference so far). -
I was using the official driver from Dell before and running switchable graphics.
Not really sure why I'm getting weird crashes/freezes on mine but I'll try a clean reinstall as a last resort to see what happens.
P.S. Is the "High Definition Audio Controller" supposed to be disabled in device manager? For some reason after installing these drivers I noticed it.
Also, my m11x reboots after starting MSI afterburner. Really weird... -

igdkmd64.sys (Intel Graphics Kernel Mode Driver, Intel Corporation) -
@smsmasters can you create a dump containing the versions of igdkmd64.sys and nvldkkm.sys etc the libraries you mentioned here.
These dumps look familiar, these happened to me before....although that was months ago, when uninstalling intel/nvidia drivers didnt happen as clean as i intend it to be.
Please go to your command prompt and use PNPUTIL to list all 3rd party drivers
from both nvidia and intel -
I ran PNPUTIL -e, I'm not sure if this is what you need

So far I seem to have got everything working. I got some initial BSOD, but I think I figured out the trick to get it working.
First of all, after uninstalling, reboot every time. Reboot after uninstalling the nvidia drivers, reboot after uninstalling intel drivers, reboot after installing the intel graphics drivers, and reboot after installing the modified nvidia drivers.
And lastly, after that final reboot - WAIT 5 MINUTES! After that last reboot it seems to be installing and configuring additional drivers - don't go into the nvidia panel, don't try and make any changes, don't try and run any programs, just let it finish whatever it's doing, then try running some programs.
That's the trick that got things working for me after I reinstalled everything. -
@Mephiska I tried what you said and it seems to have worked for me.
No BSOD so far... -
So far these drivers are working quite well. Battery life is about what I'd expect it to be. I've been running my R1 for the last 2.5 hours and still have 56% battery left. That's about what I'd expect it to be when running on integrated graphics, and overclocked (the bios OC).
The only issue I have is with there is a "High Definition Audio Controller" that's disabled in device manager. I can enable it but it's disabled again when I reboot or put the system to sleep. -
The mediafire link seems to be down as I'm getting a 404 error when I try to get the nvidia drivers. For those that have got the driver and got it working did you need to do anything with the boot options for Windows 7? From memory if the driver isn't signed it will get blocked by windows when trying to load it.
EDIT:Sorted out the 404 error, seems that there must be block on mediafire with my ISP, going in through a VPN service allowed me to connect. -
Thanks =) -
Noticed one odd thing recently. It might be a generic optimus issue or unique to our config. Scenario:
Using built in screen on intel.
Plug in HDMI cable to ext mon.
Nothing detected and nothing changes
Launch app that uses Nvidia and screen is detected, works as normal
In the above case I used the nvidia control panel to "spark" the 335 use.
