This is my first post, but I've been reading here for a while.
I like this forum and am glad to be a part of it.

    Here's what I got:
    I have a m11x r1 that I want to put an i7 out of the r2 in.
I know that it would be easier to just buy a r2 but that's not the point.
I like modding things. I also got my r1 and the i7 cheap. I will be able to put it together for a lot less then buying a r2. (I've been looking, they aren't very cheap in my area.)

Now before anybody starts giving me a hard time, I know that I cant swap the cpu's. I have the i7 mobo out of the r2. I also know that it will not fit in the r1's chassis. I ordered a r2 chassis.

So, my question to you guy's is, what else will I need to replace? What other components are not compatible?
From what I can tell the palm rest and most other parts are the same.
Not sure about the audio? Led board? on/off button?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks guys! :D

I forgot to say that it is the i7 640um mobo. Not sure if that matters.
One thing that I noticed is that the hard drive doesn't hooks up directly to the mobo.
It seems that there is an adapter that I need.

Also what speed of ram am I going to need? I would assume that it is going to be different.

    Thanks

There was someone on here that did the r2-r3 swap.

I think just about everything except for the battery, LCD, hdd, USB/audio board and ram needs to be from the r2

So, you will need to get.
    The base
    bottom plate
    hdd cage
    keyboard
    palm rest
    heatsink/fan
    misc screws

There have been a few threads... you will basically need so many new parts that it isnt "worth" it to most folks. If it were just a matter of breaking out the dremel it might be a more common project.

That's from memory though... I might be all wrong (disclaimer)

Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you. R2 -> R3 I can understand but this project appears a little far fetched. I reckon it would be cheaper just to sell your R1 and buy an R2 outright.

Same here. I believe that it is just too much money. Instead you can look for an used laptop on our outlet and it'll probably be better. ( Link)

I don't understand why everyone says that it is going to cost so much.
I have the i7 motherboard already.
    I have 8gb's of 1600 memory.
    I have a ssd.
From what I can tell all I need is the bottom chassis to be able to use the motherboard.
It appears that everything else is the same from r1 to r2.
Is there something that I'm missing?
I may need a few little thing but I don't see why this would be so hard.

I can't afford a r2 right now. The cheapest that I have been able to find in my area is $600.
I bought my r1 for $200 and the i7 was free. I already have the other parts.
I can't see buying a few parts on ebay coming anywhere near $600.

Just my thoughts. I could be wrong.

ejohnson gave you the list. If you already have most of the parts, and you can afford the rest, and are handy with a screwdriver, and post pictures here, then that would be awesome.

Well if you're putting an R2 mobo into an R2 chassis then that's not a hybrid at all, you're just putting an R1 screen on it which will fit as long as it has the same hinges (could be old or revised).

The list is basically as ejohnson listed:
    The base
    bottom plate
    hdd cage
    keyboard
    palm rest
    heatsink/fan
    misc screws

Now the question is how much of that is included in the chassis? Most don't include keyboards or the bottom plate, and usually not the heatsink/fan if you don't already have them on the mobo. The HDD cage i believe has different mount points, and if you're not taking the screws from your R1 then you'll need those too.

If you need to get all of that then you're looking at maybe $200, maybe a bit more. Honestly all you're doing is building an R2 and putting an R1 screen on it, i would go that 1 extra and get an R2 screen aswell so you have 2 fully functioning M11x's.

As Rishwin said, this is not a hybrid at all. Almost none of the R1 is compatible with the R2 and the only transferable component is the monitor, therefore it would make sense to individually acquire each component on the list as well as a second monitor so that you may have two laptops instead of one.
