Rather curious whether their replacing R1 with R2/R3 or would they just replace it with a refurbished R1 unit.

Don't count on it. Unless you purchased like 20 years warranty and they don't have stock of R1's 20 years from now, then you might get a R2/3.

My bro had his Inspiron 1520 replaced in the 3rd year of his warranty, and it was the exact same config as his original one. His parts were already getting outdated when he bought the laptop. I was hoping for at least a CPU upgrade, but we ended up with the same old new laptop. :)

Possibly, purely region based and going off the stocks your region has. Yes, people have been known to get upgrades, i myself got an R2 -> R3 upgrade.

@ Ashwin, the parts for your brother's laptop may have been old, but they were plentiful. The M11x used all its own parts, it didn't share any parts with any other model (except maybe the daughter board), so being discontinued means that if they haven't already they will be running out of replacement parts for the R1 reasonably soon.

In Malaysia, i can see there being a stockpile of pats because some parts were made there. So getting an upgrade may be harder. However having said that, that means they would also have plentiful stocks of R3 units, so if you have the highest warranty cover they may upgrade you just because they have the parts lying around.

But of course this is all assuming you have the complete care warranty and your laptop is damaged beyond the point of repair.

The 1st link on this article will get you to the warranty info on our Alienware systems, most of the stated above is certainly correct BTW. :)
