On the side of my soft touch R2, near the headphone jack, the rubber has peeled away a bit. Has this happened to anyone else's machine? Would I be able to request a part replacement (does this part that covers the inputs on the right side come off)?

it seems like you should be able to request a replacement part for anything so long as you are within your warranty. would you mind posting pictures for us to see?

Sorry it's not very clear. I used the only camera around, my phone. It's the oval shaped mark on the edge of the base between the first headphone jack and right speaker. [IMG]

No, definitely not :p I was just looking at it the other day and noticed it there. Something must have come into contact with it but there wasn't a large impact or much friction, I'm sure.

I've experienced it with other laptops with soft touch, and I'm sure more people with M11x R2s will report this in the future. I suspect they won't replace a part because of it, since it's no different than replacing a part because of a scratch, but there's no harm in trying, and if you do try, please report back with the result :)

Failing some sort of fix under warranty - which I'll be a little shocked if this sort of thing is covered - then you're going to want to /carefully/ glue it back before that divot comes off completely. Just be uber-careful not to get any glue on the surrounding surface. In general for glue jobs, less is more.

Looks like a nick. I doubt warranty would cover it as its physical damage like a scratch.

Try using the macro (flower) when you take close up pictures.

More lighting would have made for a better photo. Do phones even have a macro mode nowadays?

yep - that pic needs to be better. Cant really give an opinion without a clearer view.

In any case, do not glue it. If it is a result of 'peeling' it should be covered under warranty. Call support and discuss it. They will probably need a picture of it though which clearly shows the area in question.

As max mentioned, try a macro setting on a point & shoot cam. borrow one? also try shooting in daylight with the camera phone, dont have to be so close - as long as its focused, the detail will be clearer.

anyone with soft touch paint job experience any scratching or peeling over time? I had soft touch paint on the interior door handle in my car and that peeled after only a few months. I'm worried the same might happen especially to high contact / heat areas like the palm rests.

Very few people have reported anything here. The coating is thicker than that used on the two stinkPads I've had in the past, and after 7 months of daily use mine is still pristine beyond one scratch on the bottom access plate.

EDIT: Oh, and there is no soft-touch surfaces on the palmrest. That's actually a very durable textured plastic that doesn't look like it's ever going to show any signs of wear from what I can tell.

I am 100% sure that the warranty doesn't cover it unless your bottom base cover breaks apart.
It is important to know that according to Dell, as long as the laptop is fully functioning and usable without much of serious problems, they are likely not to allow any replacement of parts or units.

This is basically what they told me when the left side of the bottom base cover started to squeak whenever I tried to hold my laptop.
Because I only used it for a few weeks at that time, I got a bit mad and they finally allowed replacement of my bottom base cover.

I would expect bubbling/peeling of the soft-touch finish to be dealt with as a defect and covered under warranty, whereas scratches would be considered normal wear and tear.

My R2 is has startred peeling around the edges and I've only had this thing for like 3 weeks if even that. Anyone else have this issue? How was it resolved? and will this be an on going result from regular use of my R2??
