I bought M11x last year and I am pretty happy with it. However, i like to stay up-to-date and I was wondering if I could get i7 SB replacement for my current i7. Also, is there a huge difference in performance when having more than 4gb of RAM. I mean is it worth upgrading to 6 or 8 at this point.

    Bullocks.

To the OP, it's not worth upgrading beyond 4GB unless you do virtualization or professional video/image editing. You will see absolutely no difference otherwise. Also, it's not possible to upgrade the CPU.

    1) It is not possible to upgrade your CPU from a Core i7 to a Core i7 Sandy Bridge.

    2) You will not see any performance difference in upgrading from 4GB --> 8GB, unless you are running an application that specifically uses a ton of RAM (e.g. virtual machines, databases, professional video / image editing). Unless you are in one of those small groups of people, you will see absolutely zero difference in performance going from 4GB --> 8GB of RAM.

If you have money burning a hole in your pocket and just want to upgrade, get yourself an SSD (check the videos in my signature for how well they perform over mechanical HDDs). It will have an immediate and noticeable benefit, and is an upgrade that can easily be carried over into another machine if you choose to replace your M11x R2 in the future.

    Another vote here for SSD.

Can you swap out an i5 from an R2 and put the R2 i7 in there?

You would need to buy a new motherboard with the i7 chip soldered on.

Nope. CPUs are soldered onto the motherboard.

Thanks for the answers guys :) Yeah, I thought i7SB is not interchangeable with i7... These days hardware companies change their pin/socket standarts on a daily basis... And about the SSD - hopefully I will get 1 by the end of the summer

    6-6-6-15

Any ram you put in will default to these timings.

With Typhoon Burner you can go up to 8-8-8-20 which will give you more head room when you raise the BLK with SetPLL.

I've not got round to doing it yet.
