I'm looking to upgrade from Windows 7 home, to Win 7 Ultimate. Question is do i lose all my Alien Center customizations? (ie the ability to change colors and all that)

I upgraded mine from Windows 7 Home Premium to Ultimate with no problem. You will not lose the Alien Center customizations. It will just upgrade your OS.

can you tell me what the key benefits are when upgrading to Windows Ultimate? What can you do with Ultimate that you can't do with Home...?

Many have done clean installs of Windows 7 on their systems with no problems. You would just need to install all the Alienware software afterwards. There is a thread geared just towards that flotting around. I did a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate the first day.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think win7 starter has the anytime upgrade feature built in. So if you purchase your upgrade key online, you'll be able to upgrade without doing a clean install. If you already have a copy of ultimate with a cd key, the anytime upgrade won't work, you'll have to do a clean install.

Just to be clear, if you have system requirements for Windows 7 starter, then you can easily upgrade from starter to Ultimate? (as long as you have the disk and key)

If you have a disk + key you'll need to do a clean install. Whether or not the upgrade is "easy" depends on the extent to which the manufacturer supplies the supplemental drivers you'll inevitably need to install afterwards.
