I've a problem with this, in the manual:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/Alw_M11xR2/en/mm/mm_en.pdf
it seems the R2 removed the vga port... I was planning to connect my dell mini proyector to the m11x...![]()
-
That's correct...they needed to make room for the new cpu
-
:'(, they should ship and adapter a least...
-
-
There already have been a discussion on this. Both Display and HDMI ports give digital output, VGA give analog output. So there is no adapter.
-
Just order one of these...
http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10246&cs_id=1024609&p_id=6018&seq=1&format=2 -
Anyway I'll try in a retail store... just because I can return it... -
bad move...
-
I just want my "mini laptop" with my "mini proyector" xD
-
Your projector ONLY has VGA input?
-
Dell mini proyector has composite and vga... m109s

M109S Projector Details
http://vgatohdmi.com/hdfury2.aspx ?? < this seems to be the only solution... but f..ing expensive. -
I will end up using a display port to VGA most likely. This should be ok right? Anything else the R2 is missing when compared to the R1?
-
Hey Piluex, that's a pretty nice projector! I might get something like that too... so that I can show my "amazing" science research on the go.
-
It's "cheap" and nice, but there's some problems....
a) Focus: runs hot, and some of the lens
or something changes with the heat, and you may need to re-focus
after 5-10 min of use, then it stays perfect.
b) Always needs 220v.
c) Only vga and composite ='( and can't use it with my m11x R2 when it arrives.
Strong points: price, lifetime (dell claims 10.000hs, but only lasting
5.000hs it's a great deal anyway), size, weight, resolution vs
price, fast cooldown.
Anyway "for the go" I'll recomend a 3m pico-projector that can run
on batteries.
Both, m109s and pico-projectos needs a low light ambient, dell is a
little stronger than most pico-projectors (50 lumens vs 10-15
lumens) but keep in mind: visual perception of light
intensity is logaritmic. So 10 vs 50 is less than twice (about 70% more), and dell mini vs a normal projector (1000) is about half.
Another bad point of the pico-projectos is the resolution: 640x480.
Sorry if my english sucks, I'm not native english speaker. -
You can use it with the R2. Just buy a cable like the one I listed earlier in the thread.

Ok hunted around a while and could not find any other thread - apologies if one about this already.
My monitor only has VGA and I'm using the R2. For about 2 weeks I have used a display port -> VGA adapter and it works ok. My power settings are currently set to turn screen off after 10 mins of non use - if I leave the device alone for 10 mins then the display turns off as expected and wiggling the mouse / keys turns the screen back on.
However, on some occasions leaving the device for a period of 30 mins to 2 hours (with the external monitor either on or off - has happened with both scenarios) then wiggling the mouse / keys does not reactivate the screen. The power settings do not turn my computer off or into standby until after 3 hours of non use when plugged in.
When I open the R2 lid then the screen does not display until I pull out the Display Port / VGA adaptor. Plugging back in still does not allow the external monitor to display the screen.
The only workaround I have found so far is to put the R2 to sleep (or restart) and plug the adaptor back in.
I work with the R2 lid closed and connected to external monitor.
Is there anything obvious I am missing here? Apologies if a stupid question or already covered. -
Dell Display port to VGA is only a few bucks and easy option.
-
Sorry I already have a Display Port to VGA connector but I am having issues with it. Don't believe it is the adapter which is at fault so can't see how the Dell one would improve things?
The problem I have is whilst using a Display to VGA, not that I can't figure out how to use a VGA monitor -
hi, i have an external monitor which only vga and dvi output, whats the best way of connecting this to the m11x r2 which only has the display port/hdmi ports?
Is there such thing as a cable vga-display port or dvi-display port cable? will it work? -
monoprice.com is hands down the best source for inexpensive, good quality cables. -
I picked up a Sapphire Display port to VGA adapter from Newegg for only $18. Granted, it was open box, but whatever. It works great. There is noticeable screen flicker on black colors, but that's probably my display drivers (I hope).
Otherwise, it extends perfectly to my 1680x1050 LCD VGA monitor, so you guys shouldn't have a problem with monitors/projectors. Cheers! -
Hi, just got my m11x today.. i see the Displayport to VGA cables online.. but i want to pick a cable up tonight so i can use it asap. When i checked retails sites they're a whopping 30ish dollars!! was wondering if you guys know any cheap retail stores that carry them for a good price??

Sorry for bumping this old thread, but it's relevant to my current predicament.
I am looking at the M11x and need to know whether I can run 2 external monitors. As discussed, there's no VGA port...only 1xHDMI and 1xIdsplay
From what I can tell, there are DP to VGA cables...but I was also under the impression that you can't do multiple external monitors with 1xDVI + 1xHDMI b/c they're both digital outputs (I could be flat out wrong on this point!) So I figured maybe there'd be similar limitations with 1xHDMI + 1xDP (converted to VGA...but it's still leaving the laptop as a digital signal, right?)
EDIT: this thread
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=160460
is what made me think that HDMI + DP can't drive 2 external monitors...just wanted to cite that source. -
I have an r2 and until now haven't tried to connect two external monitors at the same time, but you might want to look at http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/563305-official-m11x-setup-pic-descrip-thread-3.html
