I'm awaiting my first proper gaming machine, the R3 and am a total noob! I've been peeking through these threads for the last few days and have read many a thing that totally baffles me, all this over clocking malarky and bios stuff!? I've heard about it before but only up to the fact that it makes games perform better!

Basically I was wandering how everyone has their R3 configured. When my machine arrives I want to be able to configure it to be running at the most capable for gaming but at a safe level. I don't trust myself so would rather hear what you guys recommend.

It will mainly be used plugged in on my sofa, I have purchased a belkin cooling tray so I shouldn't have to worry about overheating.

So to summarise, if people could tell me which nVidia driver I should be installing and what oc level I should be at and all other information!!!

I am very sorry for my total noob'ness and if I make no sense I apologise! Many thanks, Tom.

    EDIT: Spec would probably help!

The setup you have selected is fine and the usual best setup I5 + 1GB 540M GT and if you have the money then the RAM upgrade is fine and 6GB will be more than enough. The M4 is also the best way to go when it comes to an SSD and you should be able to get some good money back selling the 750GB HDD.

Dont worry bout BIOS settings etc you cannot overclock this processor and you can just use MSI Afterburner if you want to overclock the GPU but you dont need to with these models just leave it as it is or you will decrease battery life.

Enjoy its a great model :)

P.S I am using the Belkin little cooling pad it fits the M11x perfectly for my arm chair haha :)

Also have a 256GB Crucial M4 + 2*4GB Corsair Vengeance sitting here waiting for my R3 to turn up :D

Bought a N55SF while abroad to upgrade from a HP DM1 3101ea, however really liked the idea of a small laptop and the DM1 just did not cut the mustard, so opted for the M11x R3, if another model comes up before my next trip abroad l will prob upgrade to that without letting the better half know

So only 2 more days till l get to have a play ;)

I seem to have selective patiency! In normally frustrating circumstances I am very patient. But not this instance, I WANT IT NOW!

No need for any overclocking on the R3, the BIOS options are there but it is a VERY slight overclock and and CPU already turbo-boosts itself to 2.3GHz so that's more than plenty.

It's quite literally a plug-n-play laptop, there isn't alot of things you need to do when you receive it (other than setting your windows settings) before you're ready to use it for gaming.

I'm afraid I will have to disagree slightly! Before any gaming happens I must creat a respawn disk, install my SSD and put on a fresh install... Then it's ready for gaming!!! ;)

The BIOS CPU overclocking does nothing at all and resets itself automatically when you exit there is no way to overclock a Sandy Bridge mobile CPU unless it is the Xtreme model. Throttlestop also has all options locked.
