Hello. not-so-new user here, but never posted much.

I just recieved my M11x R3 (GT 540m 2gb) a few days ago. Since then, i've installed windows 8 and windows 7 multiple times trying to use the updated drivers until giving up and sticking with the factory reset drivers.

I seem to have a problem updating my nVidia driver. Is there a way to update it without losing my HDMI audio?

secondary question, but not as important, is it possible to output 5.1 audio through the HDMI? and if so, how?

EDIT: sorry if i'm not posting in the right place. please let me know where i should get help on this.

Yes. I've used drivers from both sites. they both disable the ability to use audio through hdmi. i really want to at least update to 285 to play BF3. it comes factory installed with 267 seems to be the only way to have hdmi audio, and ONLY through factory. if i fresh install win7 and then install the exact 267 driver from Dell or nVidia it wont have hdmi audio. from what i've read, the hdmi is a passthrough for the realtek or something..? i really would like to get this working. do you think i should try installing the driver without nVidia HD Audio?

Well what about your audio drivers then? Cos when i'm displaying on my TV via HDMI, it appears as both an external display under display CP and an external audio device under sound CP.

Tried going into sound settings and setting TV (if it appears there) as the primary audio device?

Also what exactly do you mean by "output 5.1 audio"? What kind of setup are we talking about?

with new updated video drivers installed, hdmi doesnt show up at all anymore, even with the 'show disabled devices' option checked.

I see you have an R3, what nVidia driver are you using?

Installing this driver from nVidia did the trick for me:

    Drivers | GeForce

    The driver version is 304.79

I did indeed. Rocking out just fine with my sub-woofer ;).

After the reboot, I just had to wait patiently while the "found new hardware" dialogue progressed.

I was too eager to wait for the weekend so I tried it as soon as I got hom. I can confirm that the 304.79 driver works for anyone else having HDMI audio not working on their M11x R3 with Windows 8. Thank you cjoshuav for finding the driver.
