DOS I merely brought up as an example: I'm already good friends with DOSBox. :D Actually, I've never used Win7 to any extent, so I haven't had the chance to get a feel for what XP programs work with it. All of them? Only the ones made in the past few years? Random? Basically what I'm asking is, what advantages does the VT of the 7300 have over a 4100 being used by someone with a modicum of resourcefulness? I know next to nothing about how VT actually works.

Win7 is like Vista, only good. :)

I rarely had a problem of running anything made for windows on windows. In any case, it seems the XP mode (if you really need it) doesn't support Direct3D, there's some info here. I never had a need for any virtualization and once in a while I'm running linux stuff under Cygwin (if I needed anything more I'd just install Linux... or run whatever I need on a university compuyer running Linux), old games under DOSBox.

All in all my impression is that virtualization has really a very specific usage that I never use. So I ordered SU4100.

Rodknee, SU7300 has 3MB of cache (1MB more than SU4100), that was probably what they meant. See ark.intel.com .

I opted for the SU4100 as virtualization is unnecessary and vmware can do the same stuff.

Apparently MS has removed the hardware restriction for virtualization. Patch is available for both 32 & 64bit systems.

Does that mean you cpu does not have to have Vt built in for virtualization to work, if so where do we get the patch from ?

    You welcome!

How much SSE4 instructions and 1 MB of cache really matter I can't say exactly, but based on few benchmarks that people posted with SU4100, it doesn't seem like much (if any!). I'll be getting mine next week so I'll post my results as well in the benchmark thread.

looking forward to it unreal. I doubt for benching that 1mb makes much differance, but it'll be interesting. Maybe if we run benchmarks in a virtual system it'll be easier to see the differance.

Try out this awesome benchmark! *LINK*

When using it, make sure nothing else is running, it's scoring gets messed up by any other programs being open.

post which cpu, relative speed, and kilo nodes per second.

This should give us all a good idea of the difference.

I just bought Win7 ultimate x64 and the patch still says "the upgrade is not applicale to your computer"

the windows update i am using is " Windows6.1-KB977206-x64.msu"

So are you sure hardware Vt is not needed ?????

So why is it not working.

The Core 2 Duo has now increased to a £150 upgrade on the U.K. Website as it, and I quote,... "enables breakthrough performance without increased power consumption"...

I hate it when companies raise the price without any reason.
I checked the Swedish store and it seems its still the same "for now".

Any how i have already ordered mine and just found out it has been shipped

    From KB 977206
Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode are supported only on computers whose processors have the HAV feature enabled. Therefore, if your processor does not support the HAV feature or if this feature is disabled, you cannot start any virtual machines in Windows Virtual PC.

The patch removes the HAV requisite, allowing the SU4100 to be used with VPC

    Patch Overview:
Install this update to remove the prerequisites required to run Windows Virtual PC and XP mode. The prerequisites include a processor which supports hardware assisted virtualization (HAV) which is also enabled in the BIOS. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

As for your error, my guess is you don't have XP Mode and VPC installed. MS VPC Not to put to fine a point on it, but are you sure you need this functionality? An Alienware m11x hardly strikes me a the appropriate platform for this but *shrug* people do all kinds of things for their own reasons.

Basically sit it in front of an air conditioner running full blast. Max fan/cold settings. Only for benching though. Anything else I use stock clocks for GPU

I think you misread, the SU7300 has one MB cache MORE than the 4100. The rest of the answers to your questions can be read in this thread.

No reason to compare anymore unless someone can post some benches in games between the cpu's that show +/- more than 3 fps difference. My 3dmark score SU4100 is close to DR650se's.. 3DMARK06 = 6906. DR650 score still reigns supreme. BW, StevenX

Please do not bump an old thread unless you have a good reason to do so. Thanks.

Oh, and of course we're still comparing CPUs. We're computer enthusiasts ;) Otherwise, we wouldn't have Alienware computers.

Anyone knows a work around to enable xp mode virtualization on the SU4100? I needed to run a radiology program which for some reason installs fine on my other home premium x64 but not the one on M11x

You can't. And you need Win 7 Pro or Ultimate to get the feature. Otherwise use VirtualBox or VirtualPC but you'll need an XP license.

I know this is kinda old, but Dell removed the SU4100 from the m11x options, and lowered the price of the SU7300 to the base SU4100 price :)

    Free "upgrade" lol :p

My incomming (still "in production") m11x is gonna be (in my opinion) the spiritual successor to my aging Dell M1210. Funny thing - the CPU isn't seeing much of an upgrade, beyond 1MB extra cache and a process shrink :p

The big plus of the SU7300 is that it supports Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x) whereas the SU4100 does not.

    Compare SU7300, SU4100 and i3-330UM

@Jeremy - you will see no difference in gaming at all. I score just as high in gaming benchmarks with my SU4100. As stated above the 7300 has the benefit of VT. Otherwise, they are very close. BW, StevenX

    :D - it's a free "upgrade" now, lol :p

Well, my sister has an Acer Timeline 4810tz with an SU4100, and I think it's plenty enough. Most of our people at our FL office have that same model, before Acer puled it's plug :(
EDIT: no difference in gaming? Why did Alienware bother offering it in the first place? Was it just to pull money?

EDITz: it seems that questions was anwsered already :p
