I saw a couple topics on this over the last month or so while I was trying to figure out my problem with it, but none that looked like they had really been solved, so I figured I'd post my solution since I finally managed to get this working today on my R1.

I bought an intel 5150 Wifi/Wimax combo card from a seller on eBay (after making sure that it was NOT an engineering sample), and after installing the card Wifi would work fine, but Wimax would not. The device showed up as working in the device manager, but the Intel PROSet utility was unable to detect it. I've opened up this computer so many times in the last month trying to fix it, I tried moving the card to the WWAN port, completely removing it and reinstalling different drivers (Windows 7, Vista, etc), all to no avail.

Finally, I came across a random registry hack for Intel Wimax cards that was written completely in Russian. Normally I'd be pretty wary about using something like this, but at this point I was desperate, since nothing else I had tried was working, and there was almost no help to be found on the topic. So I downloaded the file, went through the steps that the instructions (in English) had outlined, and the Wimax immediately worked. Amazing! So yeah, anyone trying with no success to get an Intel PCI-e Wimax card working, give this registry hack a try, since it completely solved my problems.

Good to hear that it helped. I guess it was something about the 5150 being "locked" to a specific brand, which the registry hack took care of. Strange that a card pulled out of a Dell would refuse to work on an Alienware without modification, but whatever.

So I guess we can say that the 5150 will work on both R1s and R2s alike.
