so lately my m11x has really slowed down.
it might be because i have only 40 gb left on my 250 gig HD.
do you think thats the issue?
i use avg for antivirus so i dont think that is the holdup.
should i just get a get a newer hard drive because i need the space and reinstall windows?
(btw ive reinstalled windows on this like 4 months ago)
thanks

Try Microsoft Security Essentials (antivirus). It caught a virus AVG didnt.
just my 2 cents. -
will try that too thanks

Good luck. Also try Ccleaner. Cleans up temp folders and registry errors.

+1 for MSE and CCleaner

Avast is also really good for a free AV (not adult video) program.
And 40gb hdd free doesn't relate to slow down or anythings similar. Mine only has 4gb free and still good though. -
What things are loading that didn't used to? Likely a few processes. After that maybe something was updated (not all updates are better).
Indexing is another possible? -
forget the antivirus. on win7 x64 it really isnt needed. antivirus is more trouble then its worth. i havent used any since 2009 on x64 and iv never gotten one virus.
you should also defrag your hard drive. and having 40gb left has absolutely nothing to do with your speed LOL.
also disable any unneeded services in windows. and set indexing only to the files you search for most. i could go on and on with things you could do, but this is just a start. -
Av is great to have even if you are uber user. At least, you can use it to scan OTHER people's systems
Some of the time av is passive or at least can be. I have no downsides in perf from having MSE -

seriously, if an avid surfer like me hasnt gotten a virus in that long, why use it? its pointless.
the only thing i suggest is use malwarebytes to scan every once in awhile, just in case.
oh and heres a link. http://exodusdev.com/blog/mike/living-dangerously-no-anti-virus-or-firewall -
sometimes it takes like up to five min just to startup and get everything on the desktop loaded.
and also it doesnt wake up from sleep mode. i close the screen. then later i open it and press the power button and nothing happens.
so i think my best option would just be to do a fresh install -
anecdotal evidence by you is not proof ajslay. Your experience with system resources, though not unique, is not what all others experience. I too had resource issues on an old old system but not anything else.
After the fact detection is just bad advice. -
Defrag your hard drive. It sped up my already speedy boot up by 20seconds when I was using the stock hard drive. If you still are set for fresh installing I'd suggest just running an analysis to see how fragmented your drive is. If its over 50% - chances are good that its your hard drive. Mine was around 85% when I first learned about defragging. Cut my boot up time from 5min to about 2min and change (back a couple years ago on an already old desktop).
No hurt in an analysis takes as long as it is to download, install and hit a button. I suggest the program Defraggler by Piriform. -
