I chatted with a dell rep and he gave me the price of 1099 dollars for a system with the above specs.
Do you think that is a deal? Or should I just go with the core 2 duo?

Add some warranty to it. 3yr minimum, and try to get some discount on that. Dell warranty is about only warranty I pay for when I buy electronics, and worth every dime imo/ime.

That's the back to school special price that they're having right now. Imo, you should use that as the base price and haggle it down even more.

Or should I just go with the Core 2 Duo and say better battery and cheaper. I am using it for school.

How long are your school days?
If 5 hours or less - Intel Core i7
If 5 hours or longer - Core 2 Duo

If you're not a hardcore gamer, getting the i7 is overkill. With the C2D, you get at least 2 more hrs of battery life. Since the GPU is the same, most old games will run just fine. The C2D variant is also A LOT cheaper. So I guess it all depends on your needs.

I am going to be at school varying times. Some days I will be there until 3 and some until 5 pm. I start at 10a.m I am thinking I should go with the Core 2 Duo?

I will for the most part only be playing source based games like Portal and TF2, nothing to new-gen. Will the Core 2 Duo handle these?

Also is the fan on the Core 2 Duo model really that loud?

Yeah there is a lot more to consider than just cpu performance and price. Each model has its quirks. Optimus vs hard switch both have their advantages/disadvantage. The stuck fan issue of the R1, the battery life of the R2, etc.

The source engine can use the extra CPU power. TF2 is actually pretty tough on my system.

Dell will try to sell you an extended warranty after you buy it. I got an offer for $379 for 3 yrs + $50 gift card vs $200 a year. I passed though since I'm computer savy and probably will upgrade before than. I figure nothing in this laptop will be worth $200 after the 1 yr warranty is up. I have no issues servicing it myself and dell parts are easy to find on ebay. I've rebuilt my D630 a few times.

Ya, go with the core 2 duo.
It will EASILY play source games.
Though you might have to turn down the graphics settings.
