Well, only two months in and the hinge issue that many others have had has debilitated my laptop. The hinge is cracking open the back part of the LCD panel. It sounds like the doors in horror movies when you open it up.

    Here are the pics:

    PHOTOS

And here's how bad it sounds (towards end of video):

Bloody hell. I hope this isn't the Area-51 m15x all over again.

Hopefully this is just a one-off case.

    Contact Dell immediately.

Wow that looks really, really bad. I expected the m11x to have less quality due to consumers cry for lower prices, but this really makes one doubt the competence of the alienware engineers. I hope Dell/Alienware will fix this, I was thinking of getting one of these when a new cpu refresh would come around.

I'm not surprised it's falling apart. The M11x has been plagued with problems from the start and this yet again is proof that Dell shouldn't send AW down the cheap mass market path.

While the M11x may be a lower cost unit it's not cheap, with a starting price of $899 here, and should be built better. My wife's brand new Thinkpad X100e cost $650 all in and is better built and feels more solid than the M11x...

Out of the 3 M11x I've received 2 came out of the box with the right side hinge out of allignment causing the LCD to be bent just like in your pix. I have another replacement arriving in a few days and this will be the last one...

Hopefully the second revision of the M11X will include Core i3 processors, GTX480M :) /JOKE and a better build quality /NO JOKE... Seriously, it needs the better build.

Yeah, six weeks here and the system is still pristine and the hinges are fine with no creaking or anything. I love how one person has a problem and everyone utterly flips out!

This problem might only occur to those whos who have had to suffer a creaky hinge out of the box.. I've had my M11x for close to 2 months and the hinges don't make any sound what so ever when i open/close the lid. Seems to me like there are more than a few defective units out there.

I'd be extra careful when opening the lid, the creaks seem to represent a weakness on your hinge.

There is no way to avoid, it seems. If Dell ships you a faulty unit, you are effed. Im having a Service rep to my house this week and hopefully they can fix it but im weary that the problem will not disappear.

It's completely a manufacturing issue and probably something that was allowed to pass because of a small error rate. Either way it is unacceptable and I'm leaning towards demanding a new machine.

Can those of you who have hinges that are literally falling apart please contact me via PM to discuss? Especially if you haven't already had support resolve the problem. I'd like to capture a couple units so that our engineering teams can investigate and determine what exactly is going on.

    Thanks,

hopefully R2 won't have this issue. i hate dealing with returns. The only reason why i still haven't canceled my order is cuz i paid $850 for a i7 m11x with 160gig/4gig, which is cheap

So if the hinges are not uniform this is not normal? But it is normal to be able to see the metal hinges through small gaps, as long as the gaps are uniform on each site?

Just remember that the M11x is sharing more than just looks with the M15, the hinge is built the same way on both models.

Went by the local BESTBUY today and noticed that the hinge is falling apart on the show model with a 1/4 gap where it should be closed and stuff falling out while it creaks.

The only question I can ask is why if you had so much of a problem with the hinge on the M15 would you use the same type of hinge on a new model?

    Wow,
Looks like Dell/AW spent more time on the internals & not much time on the case. Too many problem: creaky hinges warping the lcd, cover hits keypad when closed, lcds with dust under the screen, Optimus issues, overheating, all these issues are scaring me away from buying one of these bad boys. I'm usually a risk taker, but I think I'm waiting until some of these issues are resolved.

Evin if this thread was necro'd, I can claim that I am in the EXACT same boat as the original poster. I'm getting the screen replaced tomorrow, but who is to say that another three months from now the hinges won't break again? Oh, and it was perfect out of the box, had it since late April. Hoping it's a one time thing for me. I do have a three year warranty, so I'm going through as many screens as I need to until it's fixed.

    Hi SAIKOUUU,
You'll be happy to know that anytime something breaks on the screen, whether it's hinges, plastics/metal, or the LCD itself, the whole entire screen is replaced. They will simply send out a technician and install a new screen.

    Thanks,
    Gabe

dood if you search for threads where you have bought a laptop they ALL seem to have problems! lol

sorry mate but it has not been "plagued" with problems. There will always be more people who moan and complain on forums like this than there are those happy and satisfied. My M11x R1 was perfect in everyway - 3 guys who ordered since I got mine have got perfect machines.

I agree there is always someone for whatever reason if they see they can put a company down who they don't like they will jump at the chance.

This forum is about giving advice not about slagging Dell/Alienware or any other company.

We're not "slagging" the company. Have you even LOOKED in the hinge issue page? It's a real problem going on. Just because some do NOT have it does not mean they can turn a blind eye to those that do. The m11x is going the same way that the m15x went with the hinges.
