the M14x with ddr5 shouldn't really be a surprise, its not a small chassis by any means (which is disappointing of course, i was hoping for a chassis refresh)

Both fantastic laptops, just a bummer I got the last reviosions, just means parts take a while to come across... -
Have you not considered upgrading your 5850 to a 5870? Its a big jump in performance. Or do you have the ddr5 version? -
I have DDR3 RAM if that's what you mean?
I was thinking of getting a 920XM or something to give a boost. I do a lot of 3D modelling, so a better CPU would be a win.
However I'm still in warranty... And I'm guessing it voids warranty if I put one in myself... or if I purchase one and get a different tech to do it.
I'm not sure if Dell upgrade CPU's, but at the price they'd charge it would be a stupid investment to go with them...
But yes, would be good resale value. -
I seriously think im gonna cry... I logged onto the alienware site and saw the new 600 series and almost had a heart attack when the m11x was absent. Then i came here and saw this. This is a pretty dumb move on dells part, If the number of posts on this site have anything to do with sales numbers then the m11x is the second bestselling laptop they make.
-
-
I have to admit I never saw this coming. I've only had mine for about three weeks now and wouldn't trade it for anything.
-
i did see this coming... me, along with a bunch of other people are now building high powered desktops for the same price as an m11x.. a gaming netbook has no purpose really.. i loved mine but couldnt game nicely on a tiny screen.
importing a new I5 3570k for my new Maximus V Gene motherboard..
(in no way shape or form can any m11x keep up with this) -
While you do have some valid points, I tend to disagree a little. At least for me I'm on the road a lot and always some photo equipment with me and if I bought the M18x with me, I'll have to wear a back brace. This is where the M11x is perfect in my book.
Light and small enough, but yet good enough to play games to help the time go by. -
-
I honestly can't stand people who compare the M11x's performance to that of a desktop.
We all KNOW that it wont match it.
We don't pay solely for the performance.
We pay for the portability along with the performance.
Yes - You can buy a desktop that outmatches all laptops on the market for the price of a M11x.
However you are stuck there in one place and sacrifice all forms of portability to do so.
Before you even consider moving a desktop try fitting it into a carry bag... oh wait - you can't... -

The M11x has one major feature that no other gaming laptop (until now that Clevo is launching its own 11.6'' model) had: it doesn't weigh more than a typical laptop (2 kg is actually somewhat below average). Combine that with the ability to play pretty much any game, and most games at reasonable settings, plus Dell's awesome warranty, and you have a very unique product. It's no wonder that the R1 sold like crazy when it came out. If recently the R3 hasn't sold well, it's because those with R1s and R2s didn't see reason to upgrade, because Dell's marketing is absolute crap, and because Dell didn't listen to its customers' complaints (better screen in particular). -
If a business works in that gross profit heavily outways your net then it makes no sense for them to pull it. Be it what you are saying you get a much better deal for the price you pay but that means nothing if it is not what the punters want and what they are willing to pay for. Non of us want a super duper desktop we want an 11 inch mini powerhouse.
+ desktops are wack, have you seen the desktopreview forum recently. -
Right, then build a desktop if you want to. But try taking a desktop to the local cafe, or to LAN parties regularly, or to work, lol.
I own a laptop, netbook, and desktop. If you're ok with the smaller screen and resolution, the M11x could eliminate the need for both a 15" laptop and a netbook. This is what I'm hoping to do with the new Clevo. Just sad that M11x is gone though. I was hoping the M14x would have 660m, and M11xR4 640/650m. But whatever. -
(I'm not buying either -- Dell only sells AW in Portugal through retailers, whose warranties are crap and overpriced) -
-
But even if I didn't do all of that. How the hell does one compare a 2 kg gaming-capable laptop with a desktop?? It's like comparing a Ferrari to a school bus, one is faster, the other can take more people...
(yes there had to be a car analogy) -
I'm sitting in a cramped chair at a car dealership right now VPN'd into work and running a database server on my very well-traveled R1. It still rocks.

RIP Alienware M11x
I still love my M11x R1 even though I haven't gotten the chance to use it that much lately.
Looks like the only option forward will be W110ER. Too bad it doesn't have backlit keyboard. -
[/sarcasm] -
Desktop should be a blanked out word on this forum.
I also believe a petition should be started to ban people from having them listed in their signatures -
uh, no, wait...

Moment of silence -
well i just hope some company steps up with a small laptop with a decent video card stuffed in there and a decent battery before it is time for me to upgrade...
sager, backlit keyboard+100% more battery and you'd have a deal.
something did just die inside... -
I dunno what we are worrying about to be honest most of us have the R3 and I do not intend to upgrade anytime soon anyway.
We might even turn into the grandad's on here with R1's -
Good thing Dell let me extend the warranty on my R1 two weeks ago, I guess its got at least another year in it

m11x are getting rare
Personally I prefer m11x more then ipad or other slow junk netbooks. -
-
should i just get rid of mine?
-
Why would you want to get rid of your M11x? I would sell it only if you don't use it or you plan to upgrade to something bigger; if none of these meet the previous requirements.
I say keep it. -
and yeah, im sad to see it go. but at the same time it needed it. but were talking about a gaming netbook here. gaming on the go just isnt fun.. its aggravating..

but there's a couple sagers out there, and the ivy bridge cpu's being released with HD4000 graphics as good as a 330m, and they can be overclocked..
also, with the new 600 series theres going to be a bunch of them. but i honestly dont see a point in gaming other then somewhere comfortable. -
Congrats on hating mobile gaming; so why you here in a mobile forum?
-
and because i still contribute to the R1 community..
i helped with the volt mod, and i created the bios recovery, and did pin mods for people. -
I own an R3, have any mods for it?

This news is extremely depressing.
I always thought of the M11X as one of the best laptops ever created
Just can't believe it ...
Edit: Odd that it was removed from the US site, but kept on the Canadian site. -
-
This is terrible news. I was planning on getting the R4 when it came out.
Alienware found gap in the market when they launched the M11X, I can't believe that gap has now gone.
The fact that they replaced the M15X with the M14X makes me think this was their plan all along. -
Very sad, indeed. -
I have 3G or WWAN in mine is that not normally included with the US models? i don't remember selecting it as an added extra...
-
So this surprised me because I just bought the m11x over the m14x purely due to its size and portability. I researched these laptops and found only the MacBook air had a similar appeal at the 11" form factor. So is the m11x still the only machine that has the power to play almost any game well at this small size? Would the next version of the MacBook air 11" with ivy bridge be able to out class the m11x in terms of performance, size and looks?
-
I picked up the m11x about 6 months ago now and am extremely happy with it. It has worked perfectly for my intended purposes and is incredibly portable. I take it to university classes and my internships. For my use I can imagine no better machine. Honestly I do not game much however, with medical classes I usually don't have time. But having the power available in this small form factor has been marvelous.
My machine has outperformed every other portable pc I have run into in this form factor and I can occasionally see other users drooling when they see it for the first time. Professors, students, and collegues alike can't resist ogling it when I pull it out. I love the capabilities of this machine. Often I can get a wireless lan signal when others can not. I never have problems running simulations and the long battery life is wonderful. I get around 5 hours with normal use.
I have not found the lack of an optical drive or the smaller keyboard to be a problem. But I have long-thin fingers, so as long as my keypresses are carefully placed I have no issue with double keying or hitting the wrong key any longer.
I shall miss the m11x alienware models. For their ability to provide a powerful yet also very portable and power conscious machine, i feel they were unmatched. I look forward to keeping and using mine for many years. -
-
I'm happy with my current baby alienware, but if it gets too old I'd probably go for the Sager nontheless because of the portability, or maybe M14x if we get an option to remove the optical drive (to make space for bigger and more awesome components).
M11x phased out... sorry guys.
