Download, update and scan with Malwarebytes too see if it finds something.

Throwing an SSD at the problem? heh...

lol I just assumed he was a consumer who knew nothing about computers and was just exaggerating his hdds slow rpm speeds. Well if I'm wrong and his experiencing this, depending on what programs he has on might clog his windows to loop around needlessly. Can you take a screenshot of your Task manager processes before shutting down?

    Hey, don't you doubt it :D :D

My m11x now easily outspeeds my i7 930/1TB baracuda desktop in all but the most serious of tasks :p

But 5min is way to long, even for a laptop HDD.

I'm not doubting SSDs. I just didn't think it was the proper solution to his 5 minute shutdown and kaspersky pinging him about possible malware problem.

I have the i5 with a 320GB HDD 7200rpm, and the first time I turned it off took like 4 minutes, but after that, takes 20 seconds...

Seconding Malwarebytes to verify/clean something nasty.

Any chance this is the same install it shipped with? Maybe a format and re-install or at least running CC Cleaner to make sure nothing unneeded is running all the time. Assuming the malware flag is just a false positive it could just be some piece of software running that isn't updated/supported and probably not necessary.

Of course this is just standard advice that you might have already tried but it is worth saying.

The last idea I have is AlienRespawn goofing up and trying to update the restore partition every few min...

Or maybe Windows Update having an endless update loop. In which case, just reset the Windows Update cache file (rename it) and see if that works :) [I don't think this is the problem]

Hehe Well I know my way around windows and how config most things. and i assure you this is not something silly. Anyways I was wrong about the hanging at the force shut down pop up for explorer.exe it hangs at the Shutting down..
screen after your desktop closes. it is getting better after defragging my hd was at 50% fraggmented dont ask me how I have no idea. Also i dont think my hard drive should be full it doesnt make sense. anyways going to a new college soon hopefully I can convince my computer dumb parents to buy me a Solid state drive.

    :p

They are insanely cheap, now. I got mine (sig) for 240usd... promptly before it dropped to 230usd :D

There is also the momentus XT to consider, though I haven't found it as responsive as my SSD, it's leaps and bound better than a normal HDD (normally...)
