Hey guys sorry about all the spontaneous threads, but I was hoping maybe for some type of input regarding heavy computer usage and it's effect on one's eyes. My timing of usage usually tends to be some days as soon as I get home from school around 3:30-5 and then any time from then until 12:30am I could be using my laptop for numerous things(gaming, email, fbook, researching, and back to gaming, hah). In most obvious ways, I know that heavy usage will make your eyes tired, but sometimes I think it's just because when I'm gaming I usually tend to not blink very much. But my parents and now I are starting to suspect that heavy usage of the laptop, with it's small 11.whatever inch screen is starting to effect my eyesight more, and I'll need to schedule another trip to my optometrist because of the small difference in how things looked 3 months ago compared to now.

What is your input on usage? Suggestions? Am I alone or do many of you find yourselves "glued to the screen" and feeling eye-sore later?

Any input would really help, because I don't want this to really do significant damage in the end without me knowing it. Thanks guys :)

You have to take breaks when you game. You never should be so glued that you don't take a break to look around or refocus on other things in the room or out the window(better) The same goes for your hands and wrists. Repetition without any kind of changes can cause serious problems for any part of your body. The fact is you are spending long amounts of time just viewing something at the same distance rather than refocusing which the human eye does all day. Even a brief look around the room can help. If your eyes are tired you need to quit gaming for at least a couple of days until you are fine. I recommend taking a break. You don't need to be on the computer every minute of the day.

I recommend some refocusing on other things for 5 minutes each hour of gaming. This can be done right from your chair by looking away and focusing on other things in the room or even just a trip to the kitchen for some water or a bio break will allow your eyes some refocusing and rest.

Look away from the screen every so often and focus on something across the room. The screen takes some getting used to but going from my 15 inch to this one wasn't that big of an adjustment.

You may also need glasses. Don't forget to turn on some lights around you too.

I also had very bad sight after using my laptop, thats why I bought an external keyboard and mouse, so I could have a bigger distance between my eyes and the laptopscreen.
This helped me quite a lot, and now I even bought a 23" external screen and its a lot easier for my eyes since I can work in a more bright environment, which is impossible with a glossy laptopscreen unless you like watching your own reflection :p

Thanks a lot guys I really appreciate the suggestions, and for now on I will take 5-10 minute breaks for every hour I spend gaming. I have kind of looked into getting the gunnar glasses, but I'm still looking into cheaper ways for now. :) Thanks again guys.

I just went to the eye doctor, they said that every 20 to 30 minutes of looking at a small screen, you should take at least a few minutes and look at something as far away as you can.
Taking my eye doctors advise, my eyes don't feel as sore anymore.

I didn't feel much difference between this screen and my Vostro 13", my only complaint is how damn reflexive this screen is, that sure can't be a good thing.

Just get a cheap 17" (or bigger) external monitor for use at home and avoid using your computer in dark rooms or rooms where you'll see a lot of glare. Small text, glare, and the contrast of a bright computer screen in a dark room can all strain your eyes quickly.

That being said, there's no need to worry if you can't do any of that. Every scientific study of this topic has shown that staring at a computer/TV screen carries no risk of permanent vision damage. The myth about kids sitting too close to the TV and ruining their vision started in the 60's, when GE realized some of their TVs were emitting dangerous amounts of X-rays...

I dunno. This screen hurts my eyes, IMO. Not because it's small - I'm used to that, an artifact of my old M1210 and N10j, but it just seems.... wrong. I dunno, I've had big TN panels hurt, too. I always thought it was normal. I got a Dell U2311h, and for me, that's the most dangerous thing ever. It doesn't cause my eyes to strain after a few hours at work. It doesn't cause me to think I am using the screen too much, and I end up pulling off 10+ hours of continuous use on that screen because of that :(

Or maybe the U2311h isn't hurting my eyes as much, and it's a good thing?

Have a U2410 and that's not to bad on the eyes.

I watch TV and use the M11x at the same time, helps focus on the TV metres away and then back to the M11x.

There are four pressure points around you eyes. Press on these points for a few seconds and it also helps reduce strain.

Get a little 23" 720p monitor. Problem solved.
