    Hey.

Just got my M11x and i wanted to hook it up to my monitor in situations where i want to use it as a desktop so i can get a bigger screen. My monitor only has VGA and DVI slots. So i was wondering if it would be better to get a hdmi to dvi converter or just a VGA cable. I heard that the DVI doesnt transfer sound also? does that mean the sound comes out of my laptop and not my monitor? The monitor has some built in sound =]. And is there different DVI to HdMI converters that wont work with my laptop or should they all work easily?

    thanks in advance

    Go DVI for higher resolutions.

In principle, HDMI->DVI will give a slightly better picture. In practice, you probably won't notice the difference. Any HDMI->DVI adapter should be very straight forward to use. You are correct that DVI does not carry sound, so I assume that your monitor has some means for connecting via the headphone jack. However, in my experience, monitor speakers tend to be exceptionally bad quality and you may be better off using the built in speakers if you have no dedicated speakers.

In my opinion, anything above 1280x1024 can benefit greatly from using a digital connection, be it HDMI or DVI. Some newer monitors use DisplayPort which this laptop includes for some reason.

The quality of the VGA cable can be the killer. 1024x768 can be blurry if you have a crap cable that's taking in some RF. When I try to use VGA for 1920x1200 on my TV, it's a bit blurry, even with a good quality cable. Compare the two, if you have the ability, and you'll notice a significant increase in quality.

I am using a Dell 25 inches monitor with HDMI out + audio it is very portable because 1 cable connects more or less everything picture perfect 1080P resolution for videos and gaming.

VGA Cable should be just fine. I would also stick with your laptop sound
