    Hey guys,

My R2 is defective (motherboard shorts out). I'm trying to negotiate with Dellienware to send me a new model with the exact same specs in exchange for this messed up one. I had a sob story (which was 100% true) about my laptop shutting down during a presentation at work, which got me lectured by my boss for being unprofessional(???).

Anyway, if they sent me a new laptop, could I just put in the old hard drive and would it work perfectly, just like that? I'm thinking it should work if the models are exactly the same. I don't wanna do all this ninja stuff and transfer all my files and lose my programs and games.

Yes, I just received my replacement and just switched the hard drives out and it works like a charm. I just made sure that the bios versions were the same before I switched them out just as a precaution.

Be cautious, old parts involved in shorts etc can mess up new parts.

    Thanks, guys.

Question, though. If my Alienware randomly stops for half a second and makes a high-pitched noise through the speakers (not the hard drive area), is that a hard drive issue, or a motherboard issue?

There have been a few reports of that sort of noise from the speakers here. If I recall correctly it required service. A search here should turn up those incidents.
