Got a question for you guys. What number do you guys normally call to get the hinge problem taken care of? I have a case number from a keyboard replacement, should I contact the people who dealt with that, or some other number? Thanks!

You need to open a new case that specifically focuses on the hinge replacement.
I think it is better this way in order to minimize the risk of Dell getting confused.
I believe the case for your keyboard replacement was closed? -hopefully !

where did you get the assembly part no. of your screen replacement? i just called alienware tech support and told that the hinge problem im having and said that they will send a technichian over to fix it. but they never said about the part no. of the part that will be installed?

regarding the on the first Post... i just go to dell and loock for my system part and it didnt match any on the first post Chris made.

    i Got a M11x R2 and i ordered it last 2 /12 2011
and according to what i read from here, early feb is too early for the new hinges to be installed by default to newly purchased M11x's. So why is my None of my system part no. matches any of those posted by ChrisDell?

here is my current system part...

    Code:
1	WVP74	ASSEMBLY..., COVER..., HNG-UP, NO WWAN, GRAY
1	DWVMD	Liquid Crystal Display, 11.6HDF, White Light Emitted Diode, True Life, Samsung
    2	PX72C	Dual In-Line Memory Module, 4GB, 1333MHZ, 512X64, 8K, 204
    1	P2PCP	ADAPTER..., ALTERNATING CURRENT..., 90W, FLEXTRONICS..., 3P, WORLD WIDE..., M09, ANW

just checked my parts# from dell...
fist of all it says on top "Product Support for Alienware Laptop M11xR3"
then the part number for the hinge goes like this...
"1 3V4R3 ASSEMBLY..., COVER..., HNG-UP, NO WWAN, BLACK"
crossed referenced it with the part number Chris gave us.. and it did not match up... any thoughts???

Finally got a confirmation call for the shipping of the newly designed hinge !
Phone rep told me that it will take approximately two to three working days for it to arrive.
I will be able to take some photos comparing the old and the new hinge side by side once I get them !

p.s. I really hope Dell doesn't bring me an old hinge. Dell brought R1 screen before when I am using R2.

There are two ways to determine your Part No. as follows:
#1. Look at the tag that attached to one of the lcd wire (you can only see the tag before the screen is fix to the notebook. It is hidden under the keyboard)

#2. Go to > Dell Support, click > Support History & Status, click > Service Call Number, that correspond to the Description.

I've attached some pixs to further explain the matters as follows:

my m11x r2 hinge will be replace today... =)
and i did look at DELL SUPPORT page like mallaccra said... i take a look @ what part no will be put on my M11xr2 and it doesnt match ChrisDell posted. Does this mean im not having the newly designed hinge?

    * here is the part no. that will be installed on my M11xR2:

PKYWD ASSEMBLY..., LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., WIRELESS LOCAL AREA NETWORK CARD..., GRAY, PHTM, SERVICE... 00001

'SOMETIMES' information provided on Dell Support is not accurate and that happened to me too where the Part No. is not correctly posted. The best thing to do is to physically check the Screen Assembly Part No. or ask the technician before he make the replacement.

As a side note, i've also had a replacement for the Bottom Base, Palmrest and Bazel (the strip above the keyboard with the alien head logo/power button), where the first two item have a new Part No.

Just called tech support, I've confirmed my Part model to be: GNJW3

So normally it is part of the replacement program:
Soft Black WLAN LCD Assembly (Old part GNJW3, New part 40GMX)

However, it seems this new hinge design did not reach the EMEA area (France, Belgium, ...).
Dell Rep I had on the phone was very kind and known about the issue, but he wasn't able to find the new part model 40GMX (nor that it has been communicated officialy that the old part should be replaced by new ones it seems).

Even if my hinges are breaking more and more I've prefered to wait for this to be official here and not having multiple intervention.
Maybe ChrisM could send a word to DELL Rep in our area.

    Anyone from Europe around here?

Alienware support was a pleasure to work with. The Tech mentioned the new hinge upfront and confirmed the part number but during order placement the tech advised that my computer is "depot service only." Chris - M can you advise how that is possible? The unit was purchase open box through Best Buy and the left hinge already started creaking 4 days after purchase and is somewhat noticeably loose. Presume onsite tech support is not offered to retail outlets other than Dell direct?

Again - the Tech. was very helpful - the call is worth making. Unfortunately if it is truly a mailorder fix only I maybe forced to return the computer for a refund at Best Buy and reconsider a revised version of a R1 / R2 in the next couple of weeks.

Do we know if M11X R1/R2s ordered direct from Dell are coming with the new hinges? Sorry if I missed that point mentioned earlier in this thread.

    Thanks,

    David

It would have been helpful if you did...

A wobble Alienware - "the most powerful notebook in the universe" is intolerable. Call Support again and tell them you are not happy with the service/replacement rendered, follow up with an email with pictures attachments and if possible request for a 'qualified technician' so that no more missing screw......

Yep. If you're looking to save a buck and you want the dell standard onsite warranty you might want to check the m11x stock at the dell outlet.

Well, well. It looks like my computer has finally fallen victim to this hinge problem.

I *baby* my laptop. Yet my left hinge keeps popping up. I have to push it back down every day. It doesn't appear to stop the lid from opening or closing... yet. What do I do? Do I wait until it *needs* repair or just get the newly designed hinge and stop worrying about it altogether.

I bought a four year warranty on my m11xR1. :) I wonder how many GPUs, hinges and hard drives I'll go through. Dell has already replaced one hard drive, one GPU, one Bluetooth adapter and, soon, one hinge replaced. I'm on my third XBOX (that's three separate purchases, excluding repairs) yet I'm beginning to think my 360's more reliable.

It needs it now. It's broken. No point in waiting until it's more broken. Call support and request that they source the part numbers listed in the first post and make sure they're clear that those part numbers are for the redesigned LCD assembly that's supposed to prevent this from happening again. Make sure that they do not source one of the old parts and that if the new ones are back-ordered that you intend to wait until they become available again.

i did... and they dont know exactly what im talking about.
Well maybe because shes a girl and not that geeky or care enuf about the device. Its sucks that Dell have tech like that.

Im so pissed & just decided to return the laptop...
    probably would get a M17xR3 or a m15x.

M11xr2 is a great device, i love it... if only the hinges are not like that i would stick to it.

    I don't get Dell....
I requested specifically for part 40GMX and they ordered me 4FFHC.
I have to wait for next week to receive the newly designed hinge.
Because Dell once brought R1 LCD when I requested for LCD replacement, I emphasized R2 a number of times but unfortunately they just ignored this.

Ok so i have no parts with the part numbers chris listed under dell system information on the dell website on the parts section... does that mean my hinge is a weird part number that isnt getting replaced? Is the hinge part:

    Part # 381DH Description: ASSY,CVR,HNG-UP,NO WWAN,STCH-B

because if so i cant find 381DH anywhere...

i cant wait for the email address, my hinge has gotten so bad that the base screen case is all cracked all around the bottom left where the hinge is, then the screen actually bends if you open the lid without squeezing together the hinges. :( great laptop tho, would definately get again :)

ringing on sunday, 2 days time, hopefully they have the hinges sorted out for the UK, im not the best at speaking specially on phones, so not sure if its going to go to well

    Hi there
I had recently replaced the screen with a faulty hinge. A few days ago I called Dell to ask whether Poland is already the new parts. The consultant said that they know something about the problem but the new parts are not available for order at this time. I still have more than one year of guarantee so I'll wait.

Just had mine done folks, the tech brought the old screen and I asked her to check to see what the situation re the new ones.
She rang dell while I stood beside her and the guy from dell said that the new one wasn't available yet (i am in the UK) but "when" mine breaks again it will be upgraded no matter what the state of warrenty is.

On a side note the tech (Jemma) was first class, she realised i was slightly obsessive about my unit and she explained what she was doing and did a great job.

I also had to send them photos of how faulty my hinge is.
They ordered me Soft Black WLAN LCD Assembly (40GMX) for me.
On-site technician is coming on Monday for LCD replacement.
After that, I am off to buy anti-glare again.

Anyone had any luck in Germany? I purchased my M11x in the United States before moving here and I've been reluctant to call because I figure it might be confusing to explain the hinge problem and solution if the information hasn't been passed along to all the technicians yet. Plus my German isn't fluent quite yet...

I just had my LCD replaced from GNJW3 to 40GMX.
I can finally use my M11x R2 without having to worry about it breaking again as it definitely feels different.
I can say that it is stronger as the size and the material used seem to be different.
But it is, of course, my speculation as I don't know away to find it out.
In addition to this, the hinge gap on the left and right are roughly the same now.
    I have no tilted screen ! ! !

Just got off the phone with Alienware support (not Dell, 1-800-ALIENWARE). They're either shipping me the part on Wednesday afternoon, or a tech is coming over. Either way, I'm getting the newer hinge. Pretty sure it's the newer hinge as the tech mentioned the hinge having a "stronger material" inside.

Time to wait and see. :)

got mine fixed an hour ago, looks like the old screen/hinge, still a gap etc, fits like how the old one was, oh well any fix is better than what it was before, screen was cracked around where the broken hinge was.

Edited: Im from UK, leeds. Guess they havnt got the new designs flowing in around my area yet.

it shouldn't have any gap, check the strip above the keyboard (the strip with the alienhead logo) is properly clipped with the bottom base.....
