I was scrolling around the net and I came across this article on Engadget.. Here is the link

I'm still waiting on a ULV Quad.. hah imagine that.
-
Oh my God! Planning ahead, could I switch out the CPU in the M11x for that?
-
The new ULV core series CPU's are going to be REALLY awesome.
I really cannot wait to see some benchmark numbers and real-world usage reviews. -
-
-
These are soldered onto the mobo (ie integrated) so I seriously doubt you can do it.
If you try I will be sure to rep you every day for the next year though -
do it?
-
What kind of Motherboard does the M11x use? If the Motherboard uses BGA 1228 I'm sure it could fit.
-
if alienware would let us just buy the mobo and processor for a neat price, i'd buy it in a heart beat.
happy with ma pentium, but still... -
Okay nevermind.. The CPU is a ULV i7 CPU.. so The MoBo would have to be some X56 LGA 1228 capable motherboard.. I'm not too sure if the current M11x that kind of Mobo.
-
Hmmmmm.... I may see an M11x in my future yet if they move to a ULV i7! Still, cost may be a big factor, the M11x is already a bit pricey for what it offers.
-
We'd probably see a price hike when m11x gets a ULV i7 processor. Probably a pretty big hike since SU7300/SU4100 are processor which are going to be phased out in the near future and that dell probably got a sweet deal from intel on it. -
Swapping an ULV i7 into the M11x is a moot subject since the CPUs are completely differant architectures and not compatible. Only way to do it is to get a new motherboard.

Time to pray it's in an m11x to come lol.
-
Even IF the M11x chipset supported the new ULVs...
the M11x's processor is soldered onto the motherboard and so CANNOT be removed or changed. The only way to change would be to replace the whole motherboard.
And THAT would be very expensive, seeming as the motherboard also has the GPU and the whole chipset on it. -
He really couldnt tell us the time frame but he seemed to hint at anywhere from August to October which is fall, so connecting the dots... -
If you are good with soldering you mightI believe the CPU in the current M11X are soldered on. I hope this helps. God Bless
***Wow just read through the whole post and now noticed that every other person was saying the CPU is soldered on too LOL !!! -
Im hoping when new m11x with ulv i7 comes out that they will use the same case, so i could just buy motherboard/heat sink and drop it in.
-
there's always the wishful alternative of one having complete cover and in the not so far away future something bad happened to your m11x. It would be very unfortunate if Dell ran out of parts for the old model of m11x and have to replace it with the newer models... I mean they won't try and replace M11x with some other cheaper notebook of the same class (If there's any other from dell.) -
-
Might be a M13x with ULV i-7's
-
A ULV Core i5 may be on the m11x by June!
-
I seriously doubt it'll be that early.

Nice, I may be interested in an M11x down the road if they get an i5 ULV chip.
-
On an unrelated note, your desktop is pretty sick! -
I would be the first one to buy the m11x with the i7 ulv.
-
The M11x would be much better with that i7-680UM lol.. It's poisoning me
-
it might do multitasking a little better but i really wonder HOW much better it'd run in games with that cpu... maybe 5-10fps? i can't imagine it'd be groundbreaking.

a core i7 sony vaio z with a geforce 330m gt delivers less gaming performance than a c2d m11x.
and that core i7 is clocked right up to 2.5ghz - which can boost right up to nears as enough 3ghz. i doubt a core i7 processor will make a boat load of difference. certainly not as much as say a single vs a dual core processor.
i'll stick with what i've got till it breaks. -
the sony viao bottlenecks with the 330m GT(pretty bad card compared to 335M GT) which is why it has less performance on most games than the M11x. But I think the sony viao can do better than m11x in some games like badcompany2, dragon age, GTA4. Again M11x bottlenecks with the CPU which means CPU heavy games suffers, however with the i7 ulvs, it can improve gaming.
ALSO i7ulv is not the same i7s you find in the M17x.ULV=ultra low voltage. Which means it can be put in the m11x without melting it. I think its smart for alienware to wait until like this fall to implement the M11x with i7ulvs(price wise and less complaints from people who bought the m11x). -
It will definitely help with internet apps, photoshop, powerpoint presentation that have pictures intensive content, etc... -
In the long-term, the m11x as it is is pretty lousy IMO.
But then again, you are comparing it to a laptop costing multiples of the m11x. -

It's nice to own the notebooks that is the basis for everyone elses comparisons. Kinda like owning a Porche or Ferrari. On paper someone's mustang might beat the Porche, but in reality it's not close to the Porche. That's why I dont get why folks want to compare acers or hp's or whatever.
The ASUS I get becuase it really is similar in terms of performance driven notebooks and ASUS has always been known for performance in the past (motherboards and graphics cards). But again, to each there own. Some will complain that you are only paying for the Alienware name, and maybe you are... and I will keep paying for the name as long as I can afford it.

Now lets all remember a few things here.
One: It states in the Fall... it's not even summer yet. "Intel said to be prepping 1.46GHz Core i7 ULV processor for this Fall"
Two: Almost every (if not every) laptop will be upgraded by then.
Three: I know a lot of people complain about the CPU in the m11x. The reasons they selected those processors was due to low power consumption. Alienware's goal was to make a portable, long battery life, gaming notebook. For some reason when people hear gaming laptop most expect it to play all the high end games with top end graphics.
M11x.. New possible ULV are out soon.
