There are a number of threads and its hard to summarize what I've been reading but seems like there are a number of issues with most any card choice - including the original Dell Wireless 1520
In MY case there was no issues really with the 1520 but it was damaged during some service work so I replaced it with the 6200 from intel. This card in my system locks up a lot - which turns out happens to some others also.
I have been using an external dlink adapter which works but isnt the most practical. I am digging through amazon for a replacement but hoping for some input.
* Do NOT want the intel 6200 again. There might be some issue with the PLL type if we can make such an assumption from another thread here. In any case it sucks for me and a few others.
* Willing to consider using the Dell Wireless 1520 again as longest range or max speed are lower priority. Since the original one didn't freeze/lockup it might be a decent option
* I'm looking for stability!
* Already have bluetooth but will use a combo card if freeze goes away.
* No plans to add 3rd ant. Would use if included
So far these are what I found that probably work:

You know, I was just searching these forums for a similar thread. In my particular case, I'm running the R1 with the 1520. I'd like to know what else everyone is running for max...everything lol. I'm currently deployed in Afghanistan, so Wireless speeds are pretty low here. I'm just trying to eek out whatever wireless performance I can basically. Download speeds on Steam spikes to 100KB/s, but more than likely avg around 30-40KB/s. Just hoping I can boost some of these speeds.

I'm not sure your card is the limitation. But we could always swap!

Wireless on the m11x is a strange thing.
Some people have problems with just about all the cards out there, some people (like me) have no problems really.
I have used the stock card, the intel 6200 card, and both bigfoot 1102 and 1103 cards.
I currenty run the bigfoots with out issue.... but many people have BSOD with the bigfoot cards, or dropped connections, or itunes stops working.
I dont use itunes, so I cant say anything about that issue, but usually my service is great with the bigfoot.
I never had any problems with my 6200 card either, I just wanted to try the bigfoot card out. -
well i am running intel 1000 still which is the stock for R3, and it seems to work perfectly fine after i reinstalled alienware OEM win7 home pro X64 with ones from MS website...
Before that it used to hands down refuse to identify with almost any router, sometimes it would keep dropping connection every 2 or so seconds and reconnect... no freezing though.
Again no issues what so ever with the new win7 x64 install downloaded from MS as OEM ISO and installed from a usb flash... even the silly rebeaming thing works perfectly... the My WiFi deal... helps to extend range to my phone which has lame antenna.
hope the info helps... -
All good info. thanks. Leaning toward stock card so far.
What PLL do you guys have? SLG or ICS?

I left this out because no feedback to be seen:

What the heck I say/said... ordered the 1102 just a few minutes ago
-
I installed the 1102 and within minutes was up and running. Save yourself the trouble though and download the Killer Wireless drivers to a flash drive before you switch wifi cards.
I have an R2 and the 1102 has worked splendidly - It's not going to turn a crappy connection into a T3 line, but it does result in lower pings and faster gaming. it's a good choice for wireless adapter. -
I'll be thrilled if it just "works". Anything more is a nice bonus

Cool, a quest.
I've been using a DW1520 in an M11xR1 for ...years.
It's as solid as a solid thing with access to 2.4GHz and 5GHz(300Mbps)
Using a Linksys E4200v1 with Tomato firmware I get the following on 2.4GHz(40MHz):
80Mbps transfer rate at 15metres(four internal house walls) with a connect speed of 165-216Mbps and a signal strength of -60dB(inSSIDer)
With built in antenna one needs to rotate the notebook so it's approx 80º to the direction of the Wireless AP. If you have the notebook so it's keyboard faces the direction of the Wireless AP you can lose up to 10dB in signal strength. Also if you operate WiFi with the lid closed you'll also lose approx 10dB in signal strength.
I've also used a CNet CQU-906 150Mbps 802.11n on a WinXP Toshiba netbook. It's cheap and cheerful and with an extension USB cable gives approx -65dB at 15m in my environment. The bonus with this is that its comes with WiFi hotspot software that is sooo plug and play anyone can configure it.
CNet - Total Network Solutions
I've read there have been some issues with Intel WiFi cards/drivers and their compatibility with other Wifi streams from other cards and wireless AP on the same network. I haven't read about it cause I don't have any Intel WiFi card. -
If my 1520 wasnt damaged I would still be using it. The connector pulled off the board during a removal. The intel6200 in my system is horrible - suspect freezes are due to the PLL if the minimal anecdotal data is any indication.
Soooo... in an effort to retire the USB dongle I am using for wifi, the 1102 is on the way. Will update when I get it installed. -
After nearly one year trying to live with randomly lockup, now I find out It's not randomly but always, constantly lockup when using Skype :mygod:
But I'm not really sure the issue caused by the internal Dell 1520 Wifi chip or other hardwares, so I decide to disable that Wifi chip completely and use an USB Wifi receiver instead to prove the theory.
Will report later
Seems like Dell 1102 is a good replacement? Does anyone has any feedback? -
Edit, now its called Killer gaming.... seems Qualcomm took over bigfoot networks, renamed it all just killer networks.... so I guess its now just the killer 1102.

We cannot say a particular card will work in all cases
-
Got the 1102 card today. Too soon to say if freezes are gone or at least better than the 6200, but at least no issues with install or DOA. Have maybe an hour of use so far. Will let it run over night.
-
Update: looks like FIXED! It has been a week now of use and I haven't had any freeze issues like I did with the intel6200. Cannot claim that others would have same results but at least I'm pleased.
Informal range testing today in the house and I managed to lose 2 bars depending on what corner I shoved the laptop into. Slightly better than what I was getting with the other cards but not enough to brag about. Reported connection speed is better and was easier to get.
It could be in my head but I could swear my case was hotter when using the USB wifi.
Reported battery run time is same with this card vs external wifi.
