I like this feature of the R1 more than Optimus. Id rather switch manually when i wanted cause im sure id mess something up with Optimus and my computer would explode.

I am having trouble running dvdfab8 with cuda , I had to manually whitelist dvdfab , but as soon as i start ripping the optimus icon on the taskbar lights-up and dvdfab crashes, I have tried a number of times and i cannot get it to work, I am using 280.26

    Thanks.

Has anyone had this issue with latest source engine games?
I have a R3, and Counter Strike source for example, does correctly use the 540m.. BUT it doesn't seem to detect it properly in terms of my settings. The highest shadow quality I can choose is medium. So the performance is the correct card, but the game thinks its using the integrated..

Pretty sure Portal 2 counts as a recent Source-powered game. On my R2, it seems to properly detect the 335m, allowing usual max settings. Didn't have to whitelist it.

I've just noticed that Optimus seems to have stopped working entirely. I hadn't used this laptop (M11xR2) for gaming for a couple of months, then went to run FM2011 (of all games), and noticed that when using the 3D match engine, the frame rate drops considerably. I checked Optimus and noticed that the GPU activity is none. The game is whitelisted, and the NVIDIA processor is the default card for the executable.

It's the same for all of my games. Crysis 2, Portal 2, Shogun 2, CIV5, Amnesia, and so on.

I haven't downloaded or installed anything significant since the last time I know it was working (around a week after Portal 2 was released I'd guess).

Any recommendations? I'd try a clean driver install, but I'm stuck on mobile internet at the moment. Is there anything else that I could do?

    Cheers

Edit: I guess I should the driver version: 270.61.

doesn't work with my AIDA64 as well, it wouldn't turn on for it so i can't check the full specs of it. It is on the list, and selecting to launch with nvidia graphics don't work either...

wish i could just force it to stay ON when i want it... While optimus is a smart option for every day consumer, it is a huge nuisance to enthusiast or expert.

I never have any problem with Optimus. Maybe all of the games I'm playing (Bad Company 2, Starcraft II, Dirt2, Left 4 Dead 2, Counter-Strike, NFS Shift & NFS Hot Pursuit) works well with Optimus. Make sure you have latest driver from Nvidia installed (not Dell). You can use GPU-Z to see Nvidia GPU specification. If want to check it with AIDA64 or HWiNFO32, the trick is to run GPU-Z or open a video in the background. (In GPU-Z window, select the Nvidia GPU. If playing video in the background, make sure the player is in Nvidia control panel whitelist to use the Nvidia GPU.) The reason why AIDA64 doesn't see the Nvidia GPU because it is inactive.

And i hate the bit that I CAN'T MAKE IT ACTIVE. I hate not having absolute power over my laptop! Respect my authortha!

anyways it would really be nice to be able to manually switch nvidia card on/off when you want to not wen it feels like it... it doesn't work with older games as well... haven't tried em recently, maybe new drivers fixed it.

Has anyone tried using FXAA on an Optimus system? I tried it and I can't force it to use anything other then the Intel GPU. Guess I'll have to wait until it is implemented into the drivers officially.

Hey everyone. I noticed that some other people have had this issue too...about a week ago I noticed that games like Black Ops, Civ 5, and Starcraft II were getting really laggy and I couldn't play them. Upon some investigation I found out that my GPU wasn't activated when these games would come on. However, even when I right-clicked and manually chose to run each game with the NVIDIA card, it still wouldn't come on. I've tried to reinstall both the Intel driver and the NVIDIA driver multiple times, still no change. I called Dell and they simply want to do a OS reinstall to fix it but I figured I'd ask around before I have to go through that painstaking process.

I want to add that the NVIDIA control panel and stuff still function. The GPU just simply won't activate itself.

Is there anyone that can figure out the issue?

    Alienware M11xR2
    Intel Core i5 @ 1.07 GHZ (OC to 166)
    4 gig RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 335m version 275.33

This is rare but I know several people has gone through the same problem. The quickest solution is to reinstall windows. Not restore the OS using restore disk/partition but fresh windows installation. The last thing you can try before reinstall windows is by resetting BIOS settings. You'll need to enter BIOS, go to Exit tab, select "Load Default Settings" (or similar) & then select "Save & Exit" (or similar). Before windows boot, shutdown your notebook. After a couple of seconds, power on your notebook again. See whether this fixed your problem or not. If not, next solution is to reinstall windows.

Yeah I tried this but unfortunately there is not change. This M11xR2 is a great computer performance-wise but in the past year that I've owned it it's really had some weird bugs going on. On top of my current problem, if I don't update the GPU regularly it will sometimes freeze upon waking up from sleep (the screen just stays black and never turns on). Additionally it will sometimes wake up and have tons of horizontal, static-like lines across the screen, although these go away whenever a window opens up or if I click and drag and highlight anything.

Thanks for your reply. Do you or anyone else have any knowledge of what could cause these other problems?

I have the same symptoms you described, however updating drivers solved my screen line issue, almost like they form triangle patches if memory serves me right. Still haven't had time to do the whole OS reinstall, plus I don't have a disk to do it.

Will try the bios reset but I think i already tried that.

I'd like to throw my hat in the ring here, I have an Acer 3830TG and as of about 1 week ago my computer suddenly decided to stop letting any program except for the control panel use the GF540m GT. The control panel will use it and cause 1% of the GPU to be used, but no other programs/games can access it at all. I've spent dozens of hours trying to figure this out.

I've tried: clean uninstall/reinstall of Nvidia drivers, intel VGA drivers, intel system board drivers, and acer powersmart.
I've also just reflashed the bios. There's only two things that happened in the last few days. 1. windows update started to install intel drivers when the computer froze then restarted. 2. Avast! detected a rootkit which was removed with a killer util. There have since been no other issues.

I've just bought an external drive for the explicit purpose of fixing this ing laptop- but I really don't want to do that unless it's the last resort. It will probably just happen again as it did. I know it's software related because I've swapped out the HD with a month old backup and it works fine, so why can't I fix it by uninstalling the drivers? It makes no sense.

I fixed it by forcing an upgrade install. It took about 5 hours but it didn't destroy any data which is the whole point. Edited the scversion.ini to 7077, then ran the upgrade in Vista SP2 compatibility to do it.

Hey guys! Been a lurker for a while but i wanted to share my experience recently. I have a m11x r2 i7 , I tried running Sonic Generations but it just wouldnt get my gpu to run. I read all over the place and saw other optimus users had this problem. However, I came upon a solution that worked for me. Found it on this page

Nvidia Optimus users - Read this! - Steam Users' Forums

I just wanted to post this as a way to say this worked for me, now i dont know if this has been posted before or if this setup was known, I could not read all this forum lol but i just wanted to share what worked for me and maybe this solution can work for others who have problems making a game/program run on the gpu? It seems like that fix make your computer run solely on gpu or i dunno...But it worked for me :D Now back to playing Sonic Generations lol

Has anyone experienced the same as I? Up until sometime earlier today, as far as I can tell, my ability to use the Nvidia GPU just dropped off. I can't even say what might of caused it. Nothing stressing the GPU at all either. I've tried both of the newest supplied drivers from Dell (Intel/Nvidia), as well as from Intel and Nvidia directly, and nothing., I have a utility that will show me when the Nvidia chipset is in use, and any and all programs that I usually use that utilize this GPU aren't doing the trick.

    Anyone?

FYI never, ever use combofix on any optimus laptops, it'll break optimus and you have to factory reset/ clean reinstall your windows again...

[Unlocked] m11x R3 bios A04, very thankful if unlocked

IDK If i'm allowed to post links to other forums but here goes...
I just flashed my BIOS with the thingy thats on that link and in the bios I can select what my laptop uses as a primary display (IGFX, SG (switchable graphics), PCI (the discrete card) and PEG (No idea.)

The BIOS is complicated to understand but you can effectively disable optimus on the m11xR3's with this BIOS.

PEG = PCI Express Graphics = Nvidia graphic card

Good to know you can disabled Optimus in R3. I wonder if R2 can do the same.

No no Kizwan. It works but I started to ''mess" around with every single BIOS setting I found without reading properly.

I've got it all up and running by just removing the CMOS battery.

I don't know if this has been answered before, but does anybody know if the GPU indicator in the task bar is supposed to blink when the GPU is inactive? As in, it is constantly going from grey to colored to grey, on and on, even though it always says that no programs are using the Nvidia GPU. I just want to make sure it's not constantly being switched on and off and using up battery power.

Are you gaming at the time? Mine doesn't blink during normal usage (not gaming). I don't know that it ever blinks, but then again, I can't see it when I play a game- which is when the NVidia GPU would be active.

Try to do a Clean Video Driver Installation.

You can also clean up your registry to make sure you leave no traces of the old driver. This can be done manually or using a program such as driver fusion.

For a year time gaming I noticed major incosistencies in framerates my M11xR3 produces (i5, 4gb, 250gb hdd):
    - Dead Island 40-60 fps on maxed out and with shadows brought beyond what game allows (4096 i think)
    - CS Source 50-70 fps maxed out (? I would expect around 150 at least from a 2011 laptop and from what it shown in DI)
    - Day od Defeat Source 30-60 maxed out ( again)
    - NFS Most Wanted (the old one) 25(!)-80 maxed out (using some program to run custom resolution)
    - NFS Carbon 20-70 maxed out and it occasionally goes to 1fps and stays there until paused (read it's a game issue with multi-core cpu installed)
    - NFS Hot Pursuit (new one) 35-60 maxed out
    - Arma 2 Free 5-12 fps with everything set to min, native resolution and 1200 draw distance
    - Arma 2 OA and DayZ 15-40 fps with everything set to min, native resolution, 2k draw distance, some aniso and light aa (frankly these options don't change fps's)
    - (the best one) Counter Strike 1.6 180-240 fps maxed out on OpenGL, with developer 1 and AA turned down to 4x...

Now my question is - what the hell... Apparentally nVidia's GPU is set to forced on all of these. So far I've checked CS Source. I know DI and NFS HP run properly because this is kind of performance I'm expecting. I know Arma 2 Free is a poor written alpha code, and that Arma 2 OA demands very fast hard drive and a lot of ram (upgrade to SSD and 16gb of ram on its way). But rest of the games, especially cs 1.6 - I am very disappointed. It is better performance than Intel GPU would do (maybe excluding old NFSs) but still so slow. My mates comparable PC (very comparable in fact: dual core phenom, 8gb of ram and 250gts gpu) yields easilly 200+ fps in all source games maxed out at fullhd. CS 1.6 hits its locks at 300 (what I want). ArmA 2 works 2-3 times faster too. My system is fresh. I have almost the newest nV drivers... I just don't know if it is as planned or there's something wrong with my m11x R3. Clocks look good during gaming too.
