I just thought to create a thread to consolidate all the drivers that I have posted. Make it easier for ppl to go to a specific thread they are looking for on a specific drivers rather than doing a search thru 100s of threads to find them.

Just wanted to give my thanks to all your efforts in providing these modded drivers. I haven't gotten WC3 working full tilt but thanks to you, I feel ever so close and can see some tangible improvements with each release. :)

Any consensus on what is the best driver at the moment?

Or is it all just up to what games you play?

no best drivers for optimus atm. if you dont need punkbuster support the newer drivers are the way to go. if you need punkbuster support then you have to fall back to 189.xx drivers. this is why currently there's multiple drivers for owners with different needs.

I am looking at this. Basically, all we have here is a link to the two official dell drivers and a link to kopicha's driver mods. As a note, any main official dell drivers (BIOS, Display Driver, etc.), will become a temp sticky (at time of release) for community discussion and feedback purposes - they will always be easy to find. Currently, the BIOS stickies are up. The two main Dell display drivers (for the 11xR1 and of course for the 11xR2) are fairly easy to find as they are always on page 1 and no further back than page 2.

We are going to avoid having more than 3 or 4 stickies since NBR wants us to limit to 3 (I violate this though ;) )

I am looking into re-working a few items and will get with Kopicha. We'll see what we can do... please be patient. I have been looking at the 11x subforum for a bit now.

    Thanks.

thank you for looking into this. i think this would help out ppl in this forum especially the newcomers. Anyway dont think this will be a permanent thing anyway. As soon as Nvidia fully add in the support I think we dont even need such a thread anymore except if ppl are still looking for legacy drivers for any specific reason. :)

Well if Nvidia is planning on adding it due to customer demand I assume all the reports that were sent in would do the trick. Rumor has it Nvidia requires payment from the OEM in order to add support to their driver sets. There are at least three other Optimus notebooks that do not seem to be covered by Verde.

    Two questions:

    1. It seems that the best driver sets if you need PB and all your games is 189.79 and 258.96 - so can one be installed over the other? Can I install 258.96 over 189.79 and then when I need 189 just roll the drivers back, and then reinstall 258.96 when I need that? Or do I have to use driver sweeper every time and have to go through the multiple reboots that come with driver sweeper?

    2. Is there anything in the 189 driver that is specific to PB that could be copied over or modded to the 258 drivers? Similar to how Kopicha and Nautis have been rewriting INF files? (I no nothing about programming so please forgive my ignorance in asking that question)

**Also, I noticed, that if you install the latest PhysX drivers that are out with the 189 drivers, Just Cause 2, will load and play whereas it always used to crash at startup before ;)

    Cheers!

    1. It is not definitely that you need to driver sweep but by doing so is just to ensure that you are doing a clean installation which is better most of time since overwriting sometimes installation may not be clean. However the benefit of installing drivers on top without driver sweeping is you can retain your drivers settings including game profiles and also easily roll back to previous version without having to reinstall them. But if you are doing a driver downgrade then would advise a driver sweep in this case as you may know newer drivers may tend to add new features which the old drivers does not have and you will leave a lot of unnecessary files and registry in your system.

    2. At this point of time there is nothing you can copy. Nvidia change the way when app poll for D3D call that trigger your Nvidia GPU to kick in. I was looking at the possibility when I was experimenting the old drivers but till now not much luck on that. Its more of an API change within the drivers which is not as simple as just copying files or editing inf. I am sure that Nautis is more expert in this level of explaination if he knows whats the difference between the 2 drivers set. Maybe he can give some tips or advise but I dont think I can do more than what is being provided now.

*** the 189 driver indeed works with JC2 no issue as I have the game myself and I did test that before posting since I know quite a number here actually has the game and used to have problem with it. Like I said I cant make things perfect since they are still drivers from Nvidia but just posting what I can to satisfy both side of the gamers. I am only another owner after all just like one of you. btw regarding the 189 drivers I do have another set which is 189.88 that I am using now. If there is a demand to try it out I would be more than happy to post it. Since I believe not everyone would like to keep changing drivers unless there's a need or necessary for any reason as I personally have not seen any advantage with 189.88 over 189.79

I would love to try it! If it will make Transformers work on my machine along with JC2, then all the games in my library should work!

And thanks again for everything you do. I would be so frustrated with this machine instead of loving it, if it wasn't for you and Nautis.

The only issue I have now is this PB issue and some seriously crooked hinges from a panel replacement. But I have a pixel perfect panel so I'm hesitant to swap it out for a new one.

    Thanks again. You rock.

I guess I can't say I've ever seen anything from Dellienware on the subject, but the press and reviews certainly have led everyone to believe that we wouldn't be tethered to them for updates.

I'm used to having to hack drivers for ATI notebooks, and in comparison the modifications required to get Optimus drivers working are trivial, but it's still inconvenient.

Come on Dell, do your user base a solid and get the R2 on the list of supported systems for Verde.

I have been trying to figure out what the issue could be. I had assumed maybe it was the new taskbar tool (like the Optimus Tools) that was added. I don't think that stuff was added before 258.96 though. One of the things that was added to 258.96 and newer drivers is the addition of a new kernel driver. I had guessed maybe it was due to this new kernel driver or taskbar tool but dells 257 driver seems to have the same issues. I am just guessing really since I do not have an Optimus capable notebook. (I am tempted to jump on ViDock so I can have one though, since we recently got it working for it.)

Well the payment information is based on rumors for the standard drivers (non-optimus) and OEMs. Based on Nvidias press releases and other information made public I had also assumed Nvidia is going to be taking on support for all Optimus notebooks. Guess it will be a wait and see thing. I am interested to see if they add any missing Optimus notebooks to the new Verde set. This will be the real tell IMHO. The funny thing is that the INF is already setup for these notebooks, the driver mod just finalizes the process. This means that the M11xR2 or something very similar was included at some point in the process.

Something else to remember is that there was the announcement that starting with the 256 series Nvidia was going to release all driver packages together which really hasn't happened either.

It has something to do with the updatus. unless i understand it wrongly but as far as my examination goes for optimus one of the api call is within a system file located in the updatus folder. but since 256 release they have change to coproc and the files are different too. i also strongly believe the api call method have changed as well. by looking at how applications/games detect optimus for example. with the newer 25x.xx drivers in steam it can actually read both the igp and the nvidia gpu. as compared to previous drivers steam only can see the igp and nvidia only kick in after game launch. base on my guess in the past there is only 1 active d3d device and nvidia will take over as the active one whenever necessary. but i believe in the new drivers they kept both as active all the time and nvidia will kick in without even switching. its just all base on spectaculation base on how I see the made changed in the api call location and the way apps/games detect the presence of the nvidia gpu in the new drivers when compared to old

    Hey Kopicha,

is it too much of a hassle to put up those 189.88 drivers you're using? I'd really like to try them as I seem to get almost all my games working with 189.79, so I'd like to try those and see if there might be some variable that makes the difference.

No worries if it's a big pain or hassle.

189.88 package has been updated due to some files not being renaming correctly. Please redownload and reinstall it to get the correct version. Also I have added more download links to it. Sorry for the inconvenience its my small little mistake. More detail info I have posted it on the front page of the original thread. :)

Hi, im using your 189.88 drivers that you just updated today kopicha, and im still getting kicked by the PB error playing BC2. Im using a m11xr2 and i used driver sweeper to get rid of my 25x.xx drivers. Not sure what my issue is but even with the 189.88 im still getting kicked ;/

i am sure your problem is not related to optimus if thats the case. as this driver definitely had no issue with BFBC2 online. I think many others who are running it can verify this as well. maybe u want to state exactly the error message that PB gives you after kicking you out. that can better help identify what is your error

just a quick heads up. a new official beta from Nvidia should be release next week. Note that its Nvidia not Dell. So not sure if we still need mod to get it to work but I hope not. So we can just install just like every other regular notebooks :) And I can call it a day and resign from these tedious looking at inf and testing drivers :p

not sure which one you are installing, but modified inf file should be copied and pasted in nvida display folder.

you must have miss out replacing the modded inf file. please go to the actual thread for 258.96 and read thru the steps again. It definitely work as long as you are using m11xR2. There are some ppl who reported similar issues like what you mention but at the end of day its the owner that is missing out something. Go thru the entire thread I am sure you will find the correct answer to fix your problem.

Download the international version linked in the 258.96 post that everyone is telling you to reference. Not the UK, not the English.

You'll know you're getting the modified inf in the proper place if it prompts you to overwrite the existing one.
