What codec and player did you use?
You may try to disable aero theme to gain better performance, or try decode HD by hardware (DXVA or CUDA).
I have no problem when playing HD 1080p on my R2 i5.

    Hi,
I use only KM player without codec.
Decode hd by hardware ? What is this ?
    My alienware is R2 and I5/4gb/hd 500.
    Thanks

KMP without external codec is really crap.
I suggest you using CCCP, it's very easy to config. You can try it here
CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack
Decode by hardware, it means that you can use your GPU, not CPU as usual, for decoding HD. Because the i5 520UM is little slow, it will help increase performance while watching HD.

How much CPU usage when you have 1080p playback? If it's more than 50%, your M11x really have serious problem.

At first, you can try disable aero to see if the sound issue is fixed or not.

1)Get the latest mplayer HC 64Bit and the latest CoreCodec 64bit (This will also install the Haali Media Splitter).

    Install all..

2)Type in CoreCodec into windows search and select "Configure CoreCodec" make sure that you select "Use Cuda" (Or something similar) in the bottom right hand corner.

3)Type in CoreCodec into windows search and select "Re-register CoreCodec64" (Or something similar) click on this.

4)Go into the mplayer's options View>Options and click on the "External Filters" tab. Select "Add Filter" and pick "CoreCodec" from the list. This should be the only filter in the list. Click on it then select "Prefer" from the left hand side.

Done, stutter free 1080p video. Simple and no need for loads of codecs or packs.

This will free up your CPU. I'm currently trying to get FFDSHOW to play nice so I can do some upscalling and sharpening using the CPU for extra clarity when watching 720/480p on a 1080P monitor.

You may have to configure KMPlayer to use CCCP components. (ffdshow, haali media splitter)
The copy of MPC-HC that CCCP installs is preconfigured.

I would be careful around this as if you use the nVidia GPU you will waste battery life.

I recommend that you try use madVR. It is only available in 32-bit (like ReClock), but definitely worth it when you are plugged in - probably requires use of the nVidia GPU.

If you can use DXVA on the Intel GPU it shouldn't be so bad, but I've got a laptop with manual switching graphics and no experience with using Optimus so no idea if that is possible with the R2.

I tried the CCCP and the DXVA from FFDShow and I was still getting stuttering and wasn't to impressed with the performance which is why I swapped to the CUDA method for HD.

I use WMP for all other video's which will not drain the battery as much.

FFDShow DXVA is indeed dodgy as hell especially on an Intel GPU.

If you want to use DXVA with subtitles, you can try use MPC-HC's internal DXVA filter.
(View-> Options-> Internal Filters-> Right-click the right column and click Enable DXVA)
Set EVR-CP as video renderer under Output.
Enable MPC-HC's internal subtitle renderer - Tick Auto-load subtitles under Playback.

    Otherwise WMP is probably fine.

For 1080p playback I can manage ~20W with the Intel GPU and ~30W with the nVIDIA GPU.

why watch a movie in 1080p when you can't tell the difference between it and 720p?

    believe me: stick with 720p

Maybe he puts in on external 52" HDTV.

    @ygorcardoso:

    Here is my config:

I'm not sure if it uses Intel HD or Nvidia GPU, but still reduce the stress on CPU.

No need to purchase 9$ Core codec, because CCCP is all you need.

KMP also support external codec, so you can still use KMP as default player. I'm not sure about the config because I don't use KMP though.
