You have me completely stuck. I think the most confusing part is the wide range of games. It seems like select laptops will have freezing problems where others don't. There are a few common MMO ones like wow and eq2. but theres also a few single player ones like kane and lynch and medieval 2 total war. And these are games that most people don't have a problem playing on the m11x.
-
I have tried OC in some other laptops, all play the games, that I experience freezing with the M11xR2, just fine, and even my old M11xR1 didn't cause these issue while OC, so I'm inclined to think that it's an Optimus issue. Now we just have to get NVIDIA attention to fix it :sigh:
-
Not to be pessimistic. but i would rather give up and just not play that game then believe there will be a fix for it. No R1's have these problems? I did not know that.
-
I'm not ready to give up on the Alienware M11x just yet, but I can't believe how many issues Optimus is having. I guess this is what happens when you adopt new technology early before they hammer all the problems out.
The freezing issue seems so glaring that nvidia can't possibly NOT see what's going on. Many people are describing issues that are exactly identical. I just don't see how anyone can deny that Optimus is seriously messed up. -
Anyway, still frustrated here. Played a few hours yesterday, in the first hour it froze 3 times (once at start of a boss fight with me tanking, niiiiiice) and after that it didnt freeze for hours. -
Is there a list of games that seem to work bad on the m11x? I ask this because I'm a big fan of GW and would like to play it on my r1 instead of my old-barely-get-15-fps-on-low-settings-17"-notebook.
-
I think you would find better information on this thread to answer your question.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/462632-m11xr1-r2-gaming-discussion-thread.html
BTW. my freezing problem was also very random. Sometimes it would be within 10 minutes of playing, sometimes it would be after 2 or 3 hours. It makes no sense. -
the issue has been described many times but for last time sakes lets put it here:
-playing random game
-freezes in "x" amount of time
-alt tab or control delete out of the game
-game does not close
-m11x is still functional in other purposes but again, the game is still frozen
-cannot shut down or reboot
-must press power button to power off to reboot again
-seemly does not have an effect based on whether oc'd or not. even if all oc'd settings are off, it still happens
-occurs in a lot of games (NOT JUST GAMES BY BLIZZARD)
-if your m11x is prone to freezing, pretty much all games will freeze
note - i play sc2, wc3, l4d, cs:s, cs 1.6 etc and they are all prone to freezing usually within the first 10 minutes of playing.
this renders a ~$1000 gaming netbook useless. don't tell me that i just shouldn't play games. if i wanted one for browsing i'd pay $300 for it. this is not the purpose of the laptop that many of us have purchased. so if you don't have a resolution to this situation, please refrain from making stupid comments or saying +1 i have this problem. yes we already know this problem exists. what we're looking for is a solution, not another complaint. -
-
-
The only game I can reliably reproduce this "freeze" on is Guild Wars. It happens within the first 5-10 minutes of the game starting up, like clockwork.
Other games like Kane & Lynch 2 can run for up to an hour before freezing. I also got one freeze on Starcraft II while using the 266.33 drivers. After reverting, I have had no freezes in Starcraft II.
Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 seem unaffected by this issue. Bad Company 2 runs fine with no issues. The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is also running okay I've found.
Unfortunately I think the only choice we have is to wait for nvidia to get their act together and fix this. It's a shame really, because the m11x is designed for gaming and this bug really prevents it from doing that.
-
-
Just as an FYI, there's a leak of the new Service Pack 1 for Windows 7, that supposedly update the graphic backbone of Windows 7. You guys should try to install that, and see if it helps at all. This may helps with the issues that many people experience with DX9 games.
-
List of Games:
Crysis
Crysis Wars
Crysis Warhead
Just Cause 2
Mafia II
Starcraft 2
Black Ops
Witcher
Darksiders
Portal
Monkey island (doesnt need the 335m, but i use it anyways pluggedin)
Without a doubt, i've only experienced problems with WOW. -
do you have a link to the statement? i've been on the boards and saw random hearsay. I know this is a m11x issue as well, as this thread, and some others i've read have the exact same issue.
I suspect its optimus as well (as wow i can play forever on Intel graphics). -
even if blizzard does come up with a fix for it, it doesn't fix the other games
-
This is what baffles me the most. There are a few people who are having serious troubles playing all games. Then there are a few people who are having trouble playing select games, but okay playing all other games (like u said before f3lic, most people buy these laptops for games, if they are stating they are having trouble with one game but none of their other games, it probably includes a pretty wide variety of games.)
The strangest part is that no laptop issue is similar, there are similar wow issues but i suspect that thats because a majority of m11x users have wow installed. In my case its medieval II, but sc2 and the Mass Effect 2 play fine. In other cases its ME2 or kane in lynch 2 but other games play fine, sometimes its just the witcher and everything else plays fine. That causes a lot of confusion to why it happens. Everyone suspects an optimus issue and i agree, but its still hard to understand why it affects one game but on another system it doesnt affect the game the same way.
I wonder if Nvidia can make a fix that would solve all random issues? if it was a driver issue then there wouldnt be freezing in one sc2 and none on all other sc2 m11x users -
created a thread on dell alienware forums. lets get some attention in it.
M11x Games Freezing - Alienware Forum - Alienware Club - Dell Community -
nice....you should linkback to this thread if u can edit.
trying to log in now to re-affirm your post but dell's site giving me trouble. -
couldn't edit but i just put a post right after it
-
I wonder, do the patch/driver notes state that they fixed a random freeze crash issue in 3D games? If not, I highly doubt it since a lot of former drivers didn´t fix the problem either.
Sorry, tad pessimistic here, just had 2 crashes within 2 mins of logging in to WoW. -
I can confirm that the issue is still on after Nvidias latest update.
At least for my M11X running LOTRo -
I have more information on my fix. While I did resolve all my freezes in FFXI, they have returned for Internet Explorer. The freezes occur mostly after my computer has been idle.
Killing the process "taskhost.exe" stops the freezes. This process was using 255 MB of space when I killed it. This means there's a bad DLL file somewhere. Specifically, it is something that runs after I start my computer. I have started looking for updates for everything.
(Avast has an engine update today, btw.) -
Taskhost.exe sounds like something we need. is it safe to just stop when we start the computer? if it is. i will try and see if it fixes the problem
-
-
Currently, my computer runs fine with a 4-5MB taskhost. I am watching for that size to jump. -
I´d love to try the latest, but I can attest that I had periods of 4 hour freezefree gameplay as well, followed at some point by 4 crashes in an hour without any hint of an explanation.
My taskhost.exe is running at around 2.2 MB atm.
Time to try WoW again. Perhaps it has magically ´healed´. -
I just now got this problem too guys =[ i said earlier in this thread played for 7 hours straight no problems on WoW. Now I get this crash within 30mins after i start up WoW. I force shutdown and it fixes itself for awhile (4hours or so)
I am not so worried about it but i don't want it to get worse.
Using new 266 drivers.
Had the problem with the modded 265 and 266 drivers. -
my m11x still freezes with the new drivers
-
I froze today doing a free trial of Guild Wars.. I was able to atleast kill the process without reboot. Then tried to start to play a movie and the M11xr2 acted up .. .none responsive just the same symptoms as if the game froze before.. couldn't reboot.. had to kill it by holding the alien head.
guess these gaming laptops aren't so gaming after all. Really want to find something different. Tired of the hastles. Maybe that is why Dell is blowing em out on discounts.. as they dont want the reputation to fall?.
Sorry for being far fetched.. just really pev'd! -
I think this is a hardware/soldering problem. If you have an xbox 360 or know what the 3 rings of death are then you know what im talking about. I played WoW for 8 hours straight for a few days over christmas break. I came back and everything was still fine so i kept playing this like crazy! my theory is that after all this the computer got hot and eventually wore down the GPU's soldering or lossened something that was attached to it.
This happened with the 3 rings of death, the exact thing, people played it to much, got extremely hot, messed up the soldering. -
still freezes with the new a04 bios. i'm about to just give up. what can dell do for me at this point?
-
Ok - lets revisit this.
@f3lic, what system? R1 or R2? What game is crashing? Overclocking? Throttlestop used? GPU overclocked?
@Ack!,
Just with guild wars or all titles? again, same as above - overclocking? throttlestop used? GPU overclocking?
to both of you - what NV display driver? -
r2, every game i listed above, tested the latest nvidia drivers (currently using this), the one before that (260.99), and also the ones listed at dell. none of which fixed the freezing. cpu oc ts and evga precision all turned off still freezes. bios also upgraded to a04 and no fix still. -
What drive do you have? HDD or SSD? I'm trying to look for a common factor here - there are others who have posted in this thread a few pages back and have no issues with L4D, L4D2 and other titles you mentioned. The reason why I mention this is if it is a hardware issue, then why only some see it? Again, when troubleshooting, you have to look for a common factor.
You mentioned EVGA, TS. What about uninstalling both of them and then cleaning your registry with CCleaner? Have you tried this? If not, might be worth a try - if anything, it will rule those two out. Preserve your settings on paper and give it a try.
I'm looking over the rest of this thread and if something catches my eye I will post again. Given I have an R1 and not an R2 I cannot test but will try to help you guys.
EDIT:
Is this seen under wireless connection, ethernet or both?
If Wireless, what wireless driver do you have installed?
Does it also happen with the Dell released driver?

Clean them all - reboot and try playing again. Several entries from previous NV installs in there.
One thing I'm concerned with is the forced shutdown. This can lead to HDD issues and can cause file corruption, etc. Only do this if you cant clear the lockup any other way. If you do, always wait at least 10-15 seconds before powering up again. The HDD needs to spin down before powering up again after a hard reset. -
Im using a Alienware M11X R2 with out-of-the-box HDD.
Im using the Nvidia drivers that came out yesterday. I had the same problem with the older drivers.
Im always on Ethernet cable connection.
I have seen the issue in games similar to WoW;
Lineage2
Lord of the rings online
But not in nener graphic-heavy games like:
Starcraft2
Dawn of War 2
Sometimes the freeze comes after 10mins sometimes after 3 hours.
I havent tweaked anything, every setting is default. The only thing ive configured is to use the Nvidia GPU to run the games.
Edit: On the last thing. The "hard reset" is the ONLY way of killing the process. Ive tried everything, even powershell. -
Im using an M11xR2 I7, 4gb ram, 250gb HDD standard, installed EVGA precision AFTER the first crashes to see if i could OC to stop it.
WoW is the main game i play that i get this problem. -
Bob,
What changed? you posted here no issue. Do you remember changing anything? -
i was able to play l4d2 for about half an hour until it randomly crashed on me but it didn't have the "freeze" effect. just restarted. gonna see if this works.
-
switched to sc2 and froze 10 minutes in
-
f3lic, is Windows logging the crash in the Event Manager at all? Can you check?
Right Click on Computer and choose Manage
Event Viewer ----> Windows Logs ----> Application
Takes a moment for the system to populate the data so be patient. Should be most recent entry first. Look for anything out of the ordinary. -
nope nothing seems crazy
-
Also check the Windows Log - not just Application. Sorry, should have mentioned this.

I don't OC or anything really =/
If this happens again tonight, (twice in 30min)
Im calling alienware and getting someone to fix it, cause WoW is unplayable if that keeps happening -.- -
no errors there as well
-
What I dont understand is that there are folks on here that do play WoW without issue. What needs to happen is need to determine what their config is (in-game settings, are they overclocking at all, using throttlestop at all, which NV driver, etc.).
----------------------------------
Also, are you OCing at all (CPU or GPU)?
Throttlestop in use?
Thanks. -
after updating to the nvidia 266.58 drivers, Left 4 Dead 2 now crashes randomly. There is some sort of shader issue here, because if I set the shader value any higher than medium, I get graphical anomalies (white textured shiny guns) and such.
It now crashes a lot, producing this error:
NVIDIA Geoforce GT 335M (11xR2) Causes Game Crashes
