This is the only title freezing/crashing?

I thought it was more widespread than just 1. (?)

Change the setting in Nvidia control panel means "power save" to Adaptive not Performance will stop the crash

Sorry bat boy. It's been a few days, I'm willing to post some specifics here, I have run up to 8 games on the m11x and i have only had one consistent problem. Though i have to admit i haven't played eq2 or wow because those are games i've quit for years now.

    Back on topic.

    1. Display Driver version installed (yes, I know it variable)
    2. Game Title + in-game settings + NV Control panel settings for title (3D Profile settings)

I am currently running the 260.99 drivers
The game title i have is trouble with is Medieval 2: total war

The NV control panel settings is whitelisted to High-performance NVIDIA processor.

    In game settings:
Shader - version 2 (i've done it on version 1)
Resolution: 1360x 768 (thats the resolution for my external, i've done it with 1366x768 as well)
    No anti aliasing
    Texture filture - anisotropic x4
Unit, texture, shadow details - High (i've put it on medium, even low before)

There you have it. though, to be completely honest with you, i haven't tried to play this game in a month. My resolution was just to mark it as unplayable on the m11x, though the game is old and these settings are relatively meager. Anyways. I will load up my old save and see if the crashing continues again.

thanks guys - keep it coming. Its good to have a base where everyone can compare settings and then look at possible issues (either with settings, driver, etc.). Others may have no issues and then be in a better position to suggest settings that work for them to folks who are having issues.

Again, I am in no way saying you guys are nuts (lol?) but believe this is the best way for you to help each other. That is what we do here on NBR - help each other. ;)

Hey guys, excuse the low post count, I am not a devoted visitor to this site.

Heres my story, I recently purchased the m11x R2(i5 processor, 8GB ram, obviously has the GT 335m) less than 2 weeks ago. Hoping it to be a nice portable gaming machine, little did I know about this problem.

My first crash was on Starcraft 2, on high to ultra settings. It happened again while i was on the 260.99 drivers) Since then I have upgraded the chipset, wlan and all other drivers from the dell website (however keeping the nvidia driver 266.58) I am expecting more freezes soon.

However unlike all of your problems mine is not able to alt-tab or cntrl alt delete. Just complete system freeze and a loud sound loop glitch repeating.

If this continues I will call dell. Just sharing my experience. Thanks.

Good news. Dell Tech's gonna come and replace my motherboard within the next few days. Not getting my hopes up though, but the nice man on the phone said I'll get a refund if that still doesn't fix it. :)

I'm having the same issues - laptop freezes w/ sound loop only while Nvidia card is active. This has happened with MW2, Swat 3, and from streaming a show from HBOGO.com.

I was using 260.99 and BIOS A3 when I first experienced the problem. I then upgraded my driver to 266.58 and BIOS A4. I'm still experiencing the problem. System is not overclocked and is running strictly on AC, no battery.

    Any solution?

260.99 seem to be the best drivers I've found for the M11x R2. 266.58 may fix the battlefield BC2 punkbuster glitch and make FSAA work on fullscreen, but it has issues with just about EVERY game I've tried. It has a shader issue with Left 4 Dead and frequently freezes up (in the same manner you described) with Starcraft 2.

Ok, maybe I'll rollback, but like I said, the problem happens with both driver versions.

I found this post on another site:

    "Oh hi hi~

Wow, you have the exact same laptop as my best friend. Alienware M11x correct?
He gave it to me for a week to figure out what was wrong.

I finally fixed it, though it took a while. You need to "underclock" your Graphics card (GPU) for Dragon Nest. Sounds weird, but after a while of tweaking and changing settings, the computer stopped crashing.

The freeze you must be talking about is when you are playing and all of a sudden everything freezes like a screen shot, correct? And if there was sound in the background, it sounds like it's on replay.

This is partially due to the game programming and engine as well as the M11x's assembly. What you have to do is download a program like EVGA Precision and lower your Core and Shader frequencies while raising your Memory slightly. Do this at your own risk!! I also suggest reading some guides before doing this since if you mess up, it can permanently damage your GPU.

Right now my friend's M11x is running with around a 430 Core and with around 900 memory? I will have to ask. But it requires some patience and trial and error. One thing to keep note of is to raise and lower your clocking in small increments (5-10), then start playing the game.

I suspect that Dragon Nest really challenges your graphics card to the point where it gets out of hand."

Anyone ever see or try this?

"Has anyone gone through with a motherboard replacement from Dell? If so, has it fixed the problems?"

They changed my R2 motherboard twice already.

Freeze persists. CTRL+ALT+DEL can't kill task, forced to manually reboot

This issue seem to be going arround for like 3-5 months

I recommend that you don't expect a fix, return your laptop if you can

Any chance someone can compile a list of games that are having problems? Google Docs might be useful in that regard. For someone like me who's late to the party but would still like to help it's difficult to see the big picture.

I'm going to create a new thread for this discussion since i feel we need to start fresh. Wont do this until later this evening but for those of you having issues, please do keep an eye out.

I recently posted asking for folks with issues to be as specific as possible -

    1. Driver you are having issues with
    2. Title you are having issues with
    3. Describe the issue
    4. Include in-game graphic settings you are using
    5. Are you overclocking or using throttlestop and if so, what are your current OC settings

Without this, none of the senior R2 owners can provide input/feedback. I've mentioned this before, if this was a hardware issue then we would be seeing many posts on this. What we are seeing are new members posting they are having freezes, lockups, crashes but no real detail. This makes it next to impossible for the community to assist you. On that same note, I realize a couple of you posted details and this helps - so thank you.

With the new thread I hope we can see some progress and some of the more senior members here can chime in and provide feedback.

Thanks slickie for popping in here... I've asked a couple of other members via PM to please stop by and provide input on the issues being posted. I know many of you have issues with WoW and SC2 but I can also do a quick search and find many posts from other R2 owners who state they have no problem at all with these titles - this is why we need more info from the folks who are having trouble.

Lets see what we can track down... this is what makes notebookreview so great, owners helping other owners with technical issues. New thread is inbound.

Sounds like a good idea dude. If anyone wants to start that up, I have a list here of games that have crashed in this very regard with me:

    - Dead Space
    - Day of Defeat: Source (and source mods such as Nightmare House 2 - this may or may not mean that other source games such as Half Life 2 will crash on me)
    - Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion
    - STALKER - Shadow of Chernobyl

This list nearly sums up every game I've tried on this laptop actually, which is very disappointing. Games that I have installed that haven't crashed thus far probably would crash as well, but I've never played any of them more than a half hour at a time (which is generally not quite long enough for my system to crash)
