I have an ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U external DVD-RW drive connected by USB to my M11x-R2, but I have a lot of problems when using the drive to rip CD's. Whenever I try importing a CD, it will successfully import most of the songs, but there are usually at least a couple songs that fail. If I run the same import again, it may be completely different songs that fail.

I have tried different formats (MP3, WMA, AAC), different software (Rhapsody, Winamp), different bit rates and read speeds... all with the same result. As a last resort, I disconnected the drive and connected it to my fiancee's Inspiron laptop (also running Windows 7 64-bit). With the exact same external drive and Rhapsody settings, I was able to successfully import multiple CD's without any problems, so the problem is apparently specific to my M11x.

Does anyone know what may cause this type of issue on the M11x? Any suggestions to correct this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I should also add that running in Safe Mode seems to solve the problem, so what could be interfering with the CD rips in normal mode? I'm trying to figure it out by process of elimination, but no luck yet.

No idea what might be causing the problem, but you might give Exact Audio Copy or AccurateRip a shot.

Lower the speed in which you do your rips. Go stupid slow as a test and use any fault checking if avail... I suspect it will work.

Are you using the left side USB port? If so, try to use the right side one or turn off the power share thingy in the bios.

This helped me when trying to rip music into itunes.

I never did find the root cause of the issue with the "other" programs, but thank you for the Exact Audio Copy suggestion. I installed and configured the application and have not had an import error since. It does take significantly longer per disc than the others, but it is worth it for higher-quality, error-free rips. Thanks!

The software is slower because it has determined it needed to be. All a guess on my part but many apps like this will do so

EAC uses error correction which can make for a longer rip when the source or drive being used has problems that other applications would simply ignore.

What software are you using to rip the CD's?

If you're not using it already, I would try using Windows Media Player just to see if the problem is software related.

If you're still getting corrupted CD rips... you may have a roached USB port. Try plugging your external drive into a different USB port on your M11x and see if you get different results.

Unfortunately you're going to have to do a bit of trial and error with this one. Sorry bro :(
