I see the moderator edited my subject. I was wondering if there are any older people buying the M11x. I'm 68. Is it just teenagers buying the laptop?
Ordered the M11x-R2 8/1/10 shortly after the 15% off sale started. 7 day delivery EDD 8/16/10.
I have a desktop and an Asus EEE PC, but am getting this laptop for when we go on long vacations and I miss my gaming. Been gaming since the Commodore 64 and Vic 20 which we bought for our young sons way back when. Also played Wolfenstein on one of the first Apple computers.

I am having trouble waiting so long to get the darn thing. It's still in production. I ordered the default config except added the Alien Theme Manager and Bluetooth.

for whatever its worth, had convinced the gf to wander into best buy again (thinking this is routinely permitted to 'soften' me up for her shopping - little does she know! lol :p) last week and noticed an M11x (R1, which was back on display after being absent the month prior) being used by a customer just around your stated age who ended up purchasing it because he thought it was so 'powerful' compared to the other 'smaller' machines he was looking at...

also personally know of a female just around that age as well who purchased an R2 amongst several other (ranging in age from yours truly, college senior, to what seems like every generation from here on up! :D) of her family members recently; all as primary machines due to power/portability/price, and all have external displays readily available if 'expanded' view needed... ;)

so all in all i'd have to say you're not 'alone' in your purchase demographically speaking, as this 'lil beast definitely has some broad consumer appeal. just observing the sales trends on nbr (previously in top ten, fourth place last month, now second place this month!) is reflecting that! :D

I'm 27, as an IT professional my primary reason for buying the m11x was the cuda (Graphics processing) cores. No other computer it's size has the battery life, processing power, portability, cost efficiency, and versatility.

hi, im 37 and i ordered an m11x almost two weeks ago as a work/play laptop to replace my thinkpad x61. i was at first worried it might be too childish to take to client meetings (where i need to impress) but decided to buy it anyway

buuut. the older dude in me had to cancel the order out of principle. they show one ship by date pre sales and another one post sales. i see this as deceitful and unfortunately these days the only way you can get a company to notice is by voting with your wallet. but i digress....

anyways, enjoy yours when it gets there.

what games are you going to play on it?

i sometimes run robotron 2010 on my 40" on an apple emulator (in monochrome mode) with a cordless gamepad. brings back old memories....

So you canceled an order for something you wanted/needed simply because of the realities of delivery estimation aren't perfect? Are you saying that you believe that Dell is somehow intentionally using false delivery dates in order to entice buyers?

I'd like to answer that question.

    Yes.

I chatted with a salesperson who told me that in order to get my system before a business trip I should pony up for the 1 day shipping. I did two day assuming that the PSD was based on a shared perception of the time-space continuum between myself and Dell. I also ordered the orion hard case to protect my first "boutique" pc. Long story short, my case (which admittedly doesn't need to be constructed) arrived "on time" just in time for my trip!

Why even say this if it has no bearing on reality? Why does the PSD cease to have any status as soon as I click "pay?" As soon as I did my EDD became 8/4. I took it like a champ, I'll accept that I have a case sitting on my coffee table while I go on my trip... but then I got a nice call this morning (at 7:30 am- full disclosure: I'm 3 time zones from where I was when I purchased) informing me that I'll be going on another trip without my computer.

This is unacceptable. The PSD should have been 8/3, then when I got the call this morning I'd be more amicable to the idea that "things happen."

    yup.

i understand logistics and estimation, but i found it borderline deceitful

to this day the site shows five day shipping period on the sales page

i need a laptop and i wanted an alienware 11x

now i now longer need a laptop but still want an 11x

yes, thats exactly what happened to me.

had i known it takes two weeks to ship (instead of five days), i never would have considered the product - so i cancelled when THEIR latest ship by date came and went

    @dorkmeister
I noticed that switcheroo on shipping date also. Don't know if it is intentionally to deceive. It may just be a "default" setting. However, it irritated me as well.
I play just about everything...just finished playing Risen and am playing Dragon Age right now. Being female, I really don't care for the war-type games, but like Half Life 2, Doom 3, etc. REALLY liked Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.
Surprisingly, I can play Oblivion, Diablo 1 and Half Life 2 on my Asus 900 EEE PC! They run fine.

Having your order come later than expected is annoying, but in the long run it's not really a big deal. What is really a big deal is hinge & OC issues. I'm willing to wait a little for what I paid for, but if I wait all this time (estimated delivery day after tomorrow... finally!) and I get something with a crap hinge or that BSOD's whenever i try to OC, I'll be pissed  . We pay a premium for alienware, we should get premium quality products.... // end rant

But yeah on the original subject, Batboy was right - all ages of people buy the m11x. Personally I'm 19 and I find the value for what it offers to be unmatched - perfect for my animation major where I'll be needing to be working with HD video content and graphical rendering. Plus I'm an avid gamer.. so I think me and the m11x will get along quite well :)

Hey it is nice to see someone older than me on these boards! I am 54 and love my M11x as well as M17x! I have enjoyed all 4 of my Alienware laptops and if it makes me appear younger so much the better

I started gaming back in the early 80's  on an Apple 2C and then the Commodore64 as well. Gaming sure has come along way since those early prehistoric days don't you think?

It's not annoying, it's wrong. There's no reason to have the PSD there if the PSD the day after I purchase my computer is the same as the PSD when I purchased it and got a "revised" EDD estimate of 8/4. If there were any logic connecting one thing to the other the PSD the day after would be at least a week later, the fact that the next day they were still advertising the incorrect date is laughable.

Furthermore, if it weren't "a big deal" Dell would be honest and say "We build it when we build it, we ship it when we ship it, and you'll get it when you get it." For some reason I don't think that would build up a whole lot of demand for the product.

I don't want to take this thread any more off topic, so I'll go back to lurking the order status thread.

I'm old enough to have owned an Apple II+. Our computer lab in high school was comprised of about 16 Trash80s. Also had a TI-99 briefly. Loved gaming on that thing.

I remember the first calculators and lots of punch cards too.

52y.o. Here and I do not play games at all,I got the M11 for the power, quality and size.

I am typing this on an iPad.

    I love some technology!

When I was 14 and at school (On the days when it was raining) we had punch cards.
You'd send the cards (in the correct order) away and a week later they'd come back ... and you'd have a coding error, restart and a week later...

    We'd seen computers... in books.

First computer I worked on had 4MB of memory... and supported a whole University. VAX/VMS RIP.

Had a friend who had a computer at home. It had three-phase power and took up all the space in his spare room.
It turned the lawn sprinkler on and off.

Was on the Internet cia 1986.

And now I have an M11xR1. My life is complete. Talk about Moores Law. :D

Bah, I'm a youngster compared to some here - 45 last week and been gaming since Commodore PET / BBC Micro days (typing in progs out of magazines written in BASIC and machine code). Also had Sinclair Spectrum, Amiga, etc. Was loving my M11x until the graphics card decided to go doolally last week, currently awaiting a tech with a replacement so gaming on my MSI GT725 while I wait.

I'm 34 and female and I ordered my m11x R2 last week. I've always wanted an alienware but couldn't justify the price, and I never really needed a laptop.

Come September, I'll be going back to school part-time and decided, what the heck, I'm buying this laptop!

So, it's not all young, male gamers :p

Hay, you could have impressed us by mentioning the 64k memory limitation, Oh sorry I've ruined your moment again.

Or 1200-baud acoustic couplers for phones(there was just one type of phone then). Oh except those on party lines shared between four or five drops. Doh! sorry again.

800 bpi tapes, 8 inch floppies, Zenith, Z80, ATM LANE, Token-Ring, IBM ES9000 Mainframe, Banyan vines, PDP11, Apollo, bit vectors...

Now I have an M11xR1 and I don't even have to know how the OS works/loads to use it. ;)

    Aged 33 here

I got mine because I travel a lot and missed my gaming. My netbook was great for work and travel, but obviously couldn't do much for gaming. The M11x is a good trade off for portability and performance. Ive actually replaced my work desktop with my M11x....

Im totally happy with my purchase.

    35 (on Saturday) -
Pretty much love playing games and I travel regularly. I've been looking out for a decent "ultraportable" for many many months and on several occasions almost shelled out for a Sony Vaio z series but common sense got the better of me.

Always seen the Alienware range as a bit a gimmick really but after several months of research and with the release of the core i series for the m11x models I decided to go for it.

It will also be used for videos and light productivity activities.

Now, if Dell can just deliver it to me before my next trip!

42 (43 in Nov). Currently have an Asus G71V-Q1. It is a big laptop. I needed the CPU cycles to do a project (in Nov 2008 when this laptop first came out) and a small part of the money made from that project paid for it.

I've been traveling with it for 2 years (2 in Nov). I am an independent software consultant and travel every week for work. I am still an avid gamer and want to go with something smaller.

I currently have to carry my Asus plus 2 other laptops (old client and current firm that I work for). So 3 laptops (17", 14", & 13") is a pain. I will be able to get rid of the 14" in a few weeks, but I will likely gain a 14" from the new client because this is looking to be a 12 month project and they want us to use their gear.

Obviously going from a 17" to an 11" and losing all of the weight is great. Plus I obviously get a better GPU (9700mGT to GT 335m). CPU is mostly a wash, but don't care.

I don't have an issue with the shipping delays. A week or two won't matter to me as I'll still have something to use until then. My Asus will be resourced to my wife. I'll move the SSD from the Asus to the AW. I'll have a fast external for mass storage.

I already had a alienware orion backpack so I use that with my m11x. I have tons of room for power supply, blu-ray drive, Razer Deathadder mouse, Gaming mousepad, Media, usb notebook fan, and an REI raincover if needed that clips to the outside of the backpack... (always pays to be prepared). And assorted geek stuff like usb expansion hub, stick drives, etc... Yep... I'm a dork...dork proud! ...

Yeah, I got the orion hard case. It arrived exactly 2 days (2 day shipping) after the PSD. However, the day after I ordered the computer I priced out one absolutely identically and it got the exact same PSD. So my theory is that for basic builds that have no customization Dell can ship them off pretty quickly.

Also, I updated the order status thread after I called. Apparently the soft touch black cases are in short supply and that's what postponed my order. Given that I haven't seen any reference to someone here ordering a silver one...

The m11x, even with the orion backpack is very portable. With all that stuff it still weighs lots less than my m17. The orion backpack is comfy.

Moved from 17" and prefer to have all-in-one systems rather than multiples so I use R1 for all. Any other systems I have are for specific use (like media center).

50 and have the PC's in my signature...looking at the M11x just because of the performance. I don't really game much.

First PC was a Commodore PET, then Apple II. My college years were spent with punch cards! Computers are in my blood. :)

The people who buy an M11x are typically people who live a mobile lifestyle, and are hopelessly addicted to PC gaming. PC gaming addiction transcends all age groups.

I am in my 30s, female, and I bought this for CAD and modelling work. I do not game at all. Its virtually impossible to find the perfect balance between style and performance, and this lappie fits the bill almost perfectly. What stylish and small form factor laptop can you get at this 1000 dollar price range that has a decent discrete graphics card and processor? None! And I will never buy a Toshiba, Asus etcetc. Come on admit it, they look like any other laptop. This thing is so hardy and pleasing on the eyes, and performs so well, it was an easy decision for me.

The 11x is my "presentation" laptop, I actually produce CAD and Rendering work (Revit, 3dsMax, Photoshop, Illustrator) on a powerful desktop, and use this to load the results and play the. However, this is good enough for fixes on the fly. I have all those softwares loaded into my 11x as well. Its just too small to use for a longer period of time for my purposes, no one CADs on 11 inches surely, but this is perfect for presenting what i have done. I feel secure knowing that I am able to work on editing even without my desktop. I can in fact do anything I do on the desktop on this thing!

Its stylish, one of a kind and a sure winner for me! An anti-Mac is what I call it. Love it ! :p

Going to have to agree with this. 32 here. Move around A LOT. I haven't lived in one place for more than year for the last 10. Bought the m11x because I was tired of lugging around a 17" desktop replacement notebook I bought in 2007. At the start of this year, I bought a netbook so I can at least do some basic computing tasks on the move. But now I'm fed up. Both 17"er and netbook are going.

I just want one, small, powerful machine. Is that too much to ask for? :D

27 and i don't move around a lot. We have an Alienware desktop but we wanted a laptop we could use downstairs for mmorpg gaming ie crafting while watching tv :)

21 and getting it to replace my Dell E1505.

    Gaming + college work = M11x R1.

@TalonH - Curious why you went with the R1 rather than the R2... Congrats on the purchase. Alienware Army ...!
