Hi Guys - had seen a few requests for this and decided it was about time I opened it up.
This photo is for the new hinge design, this one is from my M11xR1 - WWLAN replacement.
Hope it answers the questions on what they have done.
edit - OK have now uploaded the old design, as we can see the actual number of screws and locations is identical, so I don't think the bosses have changed (it's possible I never checked). The main difference is the steel hinge cover now extends the entire length and is secured by screws 1,2,4,6 rather than 1,2,3 - so they have simply focused on spreading the load.

Thank you for the show and tell.

+1 Rep, good to have pictures to compare to.
-
well done ive been looking around for some time and havent even found one pic on the hinge +1

So maybe best for me to just bondo my screen if/when it fails. I love my screen, and with my luck I know I'll end up with a crap one with a swap.

Thank you so much for the pics. I hope they changed some of the lid structure also.

Repped, unbelievable that it's taken this long to get a picture. FYI, I've loosened my bolts on my original hinges as well as used superglue between the mounting surfaces and haven't had any problems since.

These are the pictures that Alienware should have posted!!!!!

Pictures arren't quite clear to me :S
Did any R3 owners (previous R1/R2) owners check if the hinge issue will be solved with this?
I can hardly imagine this will solve it, because the crews are still in the plastic lid, unless the lid has been reïnforced, the new design should eventually fail again, imo!
I'm about to order an R3, when i've sold my R1, would save me time not to have to do the reïnforcing myself for a change -
Just to tack on a bit... played with the 14" ver and moving the screen I see a lot of movement. It was on the base not the screen side. None of that proves anything but wanted to mention it.
This tells me that unless its a fluke then reinforcement is still lacking even on newer models. Time will tell if the prob is fixed properly on m11x -
Nice to see the fix that was applied to the newer models. But like others have mentioned, we'll see if it truly works!

This is why I am waiting before buying the M14x.
-
so, are the new hinges that durable already OR is the jury still out on this?
:rolleyes2: -
I haven't heard of any issues with the new hinges so far.

i am about to get my one time out of warranty replacement to the new hinges and still pondering if i should open it up and reinforce it with epoxy just to be sure
