Hey guys,
There appears to be a lot of information on here but I cant quite get my head around all of it, so dont hate me for making a new thread!
I recently bought an m11x-R2 and i'm loving it!
Basically I'm looking into overclocking it.
I have Throttlestop and have set up the different profiles on that:
Everday Use:
30/30
8
Gaming Use:
100/100
8
I have gone into the BIOS and set the CPU overclock setting to the 166Mhz and it all seems stable.
I have also upgraded the drivers for the graphics card to the latest build and performed a clean install option with them when prompted by the drivers.
My question is, is that everything?
I have WoW on there and it really only gives me 30fps - 40fps maximum on the medium to low settings but Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is smooth as silk.
I play WoW in windowed mode with only a few addons but I get greater fps from my desktop. I know WoW is more CPU heavy than GPU heavy but I've seen others get better results than I currently am.
Is there anything else I can do?
What options can I turn off in msconfig for start up?
A few people have mentioned that they can see what graphics card is being used on the task bar by the clock with the nVidia icon. I can see the icon, but It doesnt really say anything at all.
I know I can also go into the nVidia options and set which card to use.
My Specs are:
CPU:i5
RAM: 4Gig
GFX: nVidia 335M
HDD: 250G

i dont own a R2 or play WOW but i would recomend not playing in window mode. for the best FPS possible play in full screen. also if your getting 30-40 FPS im pretty sure your using the right GFX card.

I wouldn't really worry about futzing with the nVidia Control Panel to determine which GPU to you use. nVidia Optimus will automatically detect when you are running a game, and automatically switch your active GPU to the nVidia 335M GPU. 99% of the time, you don't need to mess with anything, and just let nVidia Optimus do its thing.
I would however, run WoW in fullscreen mode, and not Windowed mode. SomeGuy is correct that you incur a graphical performance hit by running in Windowed Mode.
As for what to disable in MSConfig... go to the MSConfig --> Startup tab. Can you tell us what you see there? We can then tell you what is safe to disable. -
Yeah I run WoW on high-ultra in full screen.

Don't forget to add game .exe to your white list......

I played wow near maxed in windowed mode fine. I averaged 30-60FPS depending on the situation. It was rarely bellow 40 but there were times where it got lower, but the only way to tell was to hover over the icon and see. Gameplay was flawless with the rig and I never had any issues. I did however notice the biggest improvement in FPS and overall system performance by doing a fresh install. Took the computer from pretty good to amazing in a matter of an hour.

edit; oh and its in window mode -
Didn't think that thread was submitted, lol
Ok,
in msconfig I have enabled:
Synaptics Pointing Device Driver
Realtek HD Audio Manager
Alienware AlienFX
DW WLAN Card Wireless Network Tray Applet
FF_Protection Application
Intel(R) Common User Interface
Intel(R) Common User Interface
Intel(R) Common User Interface
NVIDIA Hotkey Service, Version 266.58
Alienware On-Screen Display
IAStorIcon
Kaspersky Anti-Virus
FATrayMon
NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision
These next ones are ones I have disabled myself:
Adobe Acrobat
FATrayMon
Google Update
Webcam Control
With regards to the whitelist, what .exe for WoW do I add?
And just in case I'm looking at the wrong thing, where is this white list?
Is GameBooster worth using as well? -
You can safely disable the following:
- AlienFusion from Windows Service (known to conflict w/Windows 7 power management)
- Windows Search from Windows Services
BUT, for your reference, you get to the whitelist by going to: nVidia Control Panel --> Manage 3D Settings --> Program Settings. You can select which GPU to use with a paticular EXE. But again, you do not need to mess with the nVidia Optimus whitelist in 99.9% of cases (including World of Warcraft). Your machine will automatically go out and retrieve updated whitelists as needed.
The only 0.1% of cases when you actually need to manually update the whitelist are when: 1) you are running a very obscure program/game that nobody has ever heard of, or 2) you are running a game that is so new, that it isn't on the whitelist yet.

Awesome, thank you for the advice !
I got wow running at 60fps full screen and drops to about 25 - 30 when in heavy populated servers
Only problem I have now, is hooking it up to the tv.
When hooked up via HDMI, if I select the recommended resolution for the TV it cuts off the start bar and all the rest of the area around the edges.
When this happens on my desktop (also nVidia) I simply select the resize option, but this doesnt seem to be available in the new drivers. (266.58)
Any Suggestions?
Again, thank you so much for the advice
