So recently decided to get new ram for my M11x since 4gb wasn't cutting anymore in terms of speed.

I ended up getting https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B006YG8X9Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 assuming it would clock down based on what I read. Apparently I was mistaken, and although the BIOS recognizes that I have 8GBs, it either does not load Windows or blue screens.

Is this ram not compatible with this laptop? If so, should I be looking into 2x4Gb sets at PC3 10800?

You could try updating the BIOS, however the best approach would be to use fully compatible RAM to avoid any issues like these.

Before returning your RAM, try these steps:

    1) Make sure you are on the latest BIOS for your system as suggested by Porras.
    2) Remove the RAM modules, and re-insert them.
    3) Do a power drain: remove the AC adapter, unplug the battery, then hold down the power button for 20-30 seconds.

I am using these on my R1, and they've been working great for months:

    For the battery:
Check the wear level on your battery using HWinfo or HWmonitor. Even though the LED indicator might show a full charge, it could be that the battery is worn beyond use and needs to be replaced.

@Singh31 this is high density RAM (less chips means higher density), they often have compatibility problems with older systems; you need low density RAM (8 chips on each side, total 16 on every module).
