For christmas I got a new m11x R1 and its amazing, except that one of the front lights is scratched? if I push on the left side, it replicates the problem so its put on too tight? It has continuous pressure on it or something.

Is this something Alienware/Dell will deal with, or will they tell me to deal with it?

Otherwise I'm perfectly happy with my new laptop

I can, there is like a spot in the light that is a little different color, probably broken, the film that goes behind the light....

Call Dell, is not a big problem, is not gonna affect you at all, but you have the right to have the laptop without that....

my new unit had some scratches too. along with a area on the back of the LCD panel that looked like someone tried to rub somthing out with fine grit sand paper.

i called dell and they are working on crossshipping me a replacment. aparently they build each one as its ordered or somthing, so it may take a week. but i totally agree with the fact that when you buy a brand new anything (much less a high end product) it sould be free of any defects when you open the box.

i hope they treat you the same way they treated me.

That aggravates me. You know that someone saw that (and same issue with the rub out scratch from the other poster) and the "worker bee" was told by his/her sup. to ship it as is and if they have a problem, they can send it back.

    my thoughts exactly...

makes me second guess the actual quality of alienware. this is my first alienware purchase... i was under the impression they were the Ferrari of PCs. this makes me rethink that notion.

Let's not forget we are talking China here.... the rules and norms the "worker" have to abide by are not necessarily the same. Still kills me that we have a communist state making our stuff... while workers here go unemployed.

I had that issue on mine and it fixed itself sorta, I just rubbed on it a bit and it went back to normal.

As someone here suggested (or did, rather)

I just kept rubbing it until the pressure was no longer on it, and thus the light looks pretty much normal now. Although if I touch it it in the slightest it the marks form again leading to more rubbing.

Gonna try my hardest not to touch the light now, and save the hassle of getting a replacement

Hi guys, I'm new around here. Anyway, I have the same problem as you SonRK.
Brand new alienware with one botched front light.

Sure it doesn't affect performance, and performance wise, I have nothing to complaint about really, but it sure bugs me every time i look at it! (pretty disappointed seeing that this is my first experience with the much-praised alienware).

I've tried rubbing it, but it ended up looking weirder. Kinda like when you have air bubbles trapped under your tinted car windshield, you can rub it but it will simply move around and still be there.

Right now I'm considering opening up the whole thing to see what i can do with the front light, would you guys do the same?

    thanks

Honestly, while I am not OCD (much) I would get it replaced. Its not a matter of dealing with the hassle, it is a matter of Alienware/Dell needs to know about their QC issues. If you buy a new laptop and you have service performed within the first month or two for cosmetic issues, there will be red flags go up in the QC department. Enough red flags and one of the higher ups goes poking around. Trust me, the worker bees don't like it when brass is poking around.

You do indeed deserve a product free of human error defects. While some things are out of our hands (motherboard goes bad after 3 months due to a bad solder joint) things like cosmetic issues should have been caught.

i've emailed dell to see what can be done without me taking the whole thing apart.

what a shame, if only they'd care more about the little details and finishing, the m11x would've been perfect!

    sigh~

i've opened up the system anyway.

unfortunately there's nothing can be done for the botched light other than 1) replacing the entire palmrest / 2) replacing only the lighting panels (wafer thin light emitter of somekind) for the front grills.

i guess i'll have to live with an alienware m11x that's blind in one eye (cataract) ~sigh

    what a bummer eh?

there's another solution at hand for me, but this one will have to wait (i don't know how long it'll be). when the new replacement hinges get here in malaysia, i'm gonna go get my hinge replaced and while at it, get the grille lighting replaced as well.

hinge replacement is free (right?), but i wonder how much getting the lighting replaced is gonna cost me.

    goodluck to us all.
