    THIS.

The Debbie Downers of the world that are constantly expecting things to go wrong or have unmeetable standards of perfection, always seem to be the one's that have these issues. I don't know if it's The Force, or some sub conscious need to prove to themselves how hard and negative life is to reinforce some dysfunctional belief - but it always seems to be the case.

I've had issues with my M11x. 4 screen replacements, almost broken hinge, and a tech who stripped a screw.

But I kept my patience and trust that I would get a quality unit that I'd be happy with, and that's exactly what happened with my replacement.

And I love this machine, I really do. I also love my Asus G73JH-A1, but that unit does have a rubber foot on the back that has come off, numerous heating issues with the GPU, a bad VBios that never got official support, and a few games that won't run on it that will on my M11x (Darksiders being one)

I love both machines, and the build quality on my replacement is excellent. Yes, the LCD panel could be better, but the screen I have now is fantastic compared to the others I've had. And it even has better Picture Quality than two of the others that were the same make and model.

Also, it's a little manipulative to say that someone should expect perfect, issue free, build quality in a "2nd gen" notebook.

Um, the M11x, is a first of it's kind. Having the kind of power and performance it does in the small form factor it does. It was brand new product that was introduced in 2010. A completely, never been done before product - whose "2nd gen" 'so it should be perfect' only came out 6 months after a brand new product launch. Issues, like the hinge, while annoying - sometimes happen on new products. Dell is handling it and starting next month we'll know whether they will live up to that task or not. Based on the success of the M11x, I believe they will.

Every large company that manufactures these products has issues. Even the ones with sterling reputations.

People love to compare Apple to everything else and how much better their product quality is - Well, that's not been my experience. I've had to have had roughly 10 IPhone's exchanged since I started with the Apple 3G. 6 were IPhone 4's. Mostly due to stuck or dead pixels in the display as well as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi issues.

The $70 Apple Care plan is practically "mandatory" if you want to own an IPhone.

And while some may freak out about this and rage and get negative and want to complain to the world about this injustice - sure in their belief that it will happen again (never figuring out the common denominator in those experiences - themselves and their negative beliefs)

And so to them it does-

Me? I don't bother wasting the time and energy, get the unit exchanged until I get one I'm happy with - and keep it moving.

(Still love my IPhone too.) ;)

Dell's quality is just as good as Apple's or Asus or even Toyota. But if you go looking or expecting problems in life - you're going to find them. And if a constant negative vibe is the filter one wants to experience life with, it's on nobody but you, why you're miserable.

    Cheers

I'm fine with you dealing your own issues your way but to pass judgement on other people because of their differing views is silly. You assume they are "Debbie Downers" and "miserable" but what if they are pragmatic? They are being realistic about the situation and accept their hinges are going to break because that is what is happening to nearly everybody else, in some cases, multiple times.

Your view certainly hasn't stopped you from getting the same hinge issues.

Nobody can ask for a perfect, issue free build quality in any notebook. What they did ask for and expect is a fix to the hinge before rushing to release the the R2.

Remember, it is possible to be patriotic and criticise your home nation, and that parallel can be drawn here too. I dislike the unreliability of the hinges but I still love the M11x for being the fastest 11.6' notebook around.

I just discovered the m11x 2 weeks ago.

As I understand it my i7 is still a first generation product. A processor upgrade has occurred between r1 and r2 however basically the machine is the same.

I would not consider any m11x r1, r2, r3, 4 a generational release until the chassis changes in some substantial way.

For anyone reading this post I ask that you stop saying my R2 is a 2nd generation unit. Its the same unit with matte versus paint and su7300 versus i5/i7.

    Thats all that has changed.

Sorry, homie. You and I are actually on the same page. The difference is, you read my words in a way less friendly tone than the one in my head as I was typing them.

To me this is the biggest foible of the net. Tone never gets communicated properly, and is such a crucial part of communication.

That being said, it is on me and my responsibility to write in a way where the tone is clear. So my apologies.

I wasn't passing judgment on "anyone" in particular, it was more a comment on attitude and perspective. I'm totally a fan of pragmatism. In fact, I'm not really down with judging anyone. If someone wants to be negative and bitter, have at it. But the point I was trying to make was, people create their own reality with their thoughts and beliefs and emotions a lot more than they realize or are willing to acknowledge.

Also, I just wanted to point out, that in my experience, Apple hasn't been the gold standard of quality that others on this thread were talking about.

And to be clear, I never really had hinge issues. What I had, was loose hinges that allowed me to hustle a panel replacement because I hated my panel and used the hinge issue to play the panel lottery and came out a winner.

But I have had dust under the panel, panel dying, more dust, etc. So, is it perfect? No. But the quality in my opinion is on par with Apple and the feelings of the OP.

You can go through my threads and see plenty of times where I had issues with this machine, so I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't think people were allowed on our mutually agreed view of pragmatism.

But the tone of the posts made by the guy the OP was referring to seemed to belay someone who is way more negative.

Yet, seeing as how the tone of my post was misinterpreted, it's very possible I did the same. So, again, my bad.

I still believe in the point I was trying to make:

People create their own reality with their thoughts and beliefs and emotions a lot more than they realize or are willing to acknowledge.

Maybe I should have just said it that simply the first time?

    Sorry for the miscommunication.

    Cheers

That's right. The R2 is really the same machine with minor changes to a few components. I like to think of it as the R1.1. The R1 was only out for 4 months before the R2 was in people's hands.

    Very impressive.

It is quite a revolutionary statement in my opinion... Previously I thought that someone should expect perfect, issue free build quality in any notebook being manufactured and sold. That's kinda... the whole point of buying stuff, it governs the whole process. No? :D

Having an M11xR1 SU7300 for 11¼ months I can say it's not put a foot wrong.

No hardware failures, no hinge issues, no software issues.
Plastics are all still flush and only been stripped down to clean up a coffee spill.

Still have original 'cloth' to separate screen and keyboard from touching.

    Currently running Win 7 PRO SP1 Intel 2020 Nvidia 260.63 BIOS A05.

CPU over-clocked at 1.6Ghz handles most day to day tasks.
GPU over-clocking smooths out my game (Crysis-1) in DX9 mode.

Apache and MySQL servers are handled fine.

Multiple virtual PCs push out the memory (1028MB assigned to each) with the CPU taking a bit of a hit, but still manageable.

Video editing is possible but does struggle on HD video conversion time with existing SU7300 CPU at 1.6Ghz

Audio via HDMI or Multi-Channel sounds great and laughingly you can still loose yourself watching a video on an 11.6" screen when you have 7.1 surround sound via a receiver.

Dual digital monitor support (On two 24" IPS). On which you can play two discrete videos with each having it's own discrete sound track.

I spent a bit of time reviewing Netbooks and Notebooks in the sub 12" range and so I'm still happy with my selection. Oddly, there's still no sub 12" notebook to pip the M11x yet.

Not an impulse buy and does what I bought it for...writing code. :D

^^^ I don't have that much experience with the m11x. Mine just arrived yesterday! It's made a stellar first impression so far and it's exactly what I was expecting. Already OC'ed and I can tell this is going to be the machine I want to take with me everywhere. I was using a 17" laptop prior to this that was just a couple years old and the m11x completely smokes it.

What I do have experience with is being a complete gadget and and gaming nerd since birth. NES, Atari, Apple II, Pentium all flowed through my house at some point. Unsatisfied with LCD screens at a size to price ratio last fall I built a true home theater around an Epson projector. I love the thing, but with every product there's always someone who has a bad experience, or bad opinion.

It's funny that someone mentioned Toyota and Apple a few posts ago: I have and iPhone and also a Toyota Corrolla. They're both far from perfect, but enjoyable products. How can any product possibly be perfect? I just hope that the corporation looking to make a buck tries to make the BEST product they have in mind. The best car, phone, video game, anything. I view agriculture, food, and beer much in the same way. Is there are a perfect beer? We might disagree on that. :)

All I know is what I personally like and I love this little machine out of the box. We'll see how I feel in a year from now.

Yep, unfortunately I have to agree. I got my R2 (with bluetooth and 500 GB HDD that made it take an extra week to ship) Saturday and if it wasn't so darn pretty I would have already sent it back. It definitely has 'the cool factor'. Unfortunately I have yet to play a game on it (or do anything else for that matter) because it keeps freezing. Instead I spent my first 3 days with my new laptop running diagnostics, reformatting and rebuilding, trying different drivers, etc, trying to figure out what is causing it to lock up so I can keep this sweet little thing with the blue eyes and soft skin that was made just for me to the point that my name is on the bottom.

So instead of looking forward to getting home this evening and enjoying my new laptop, I am left wondering if Steam had enough time last night to download my Civilization IV before it locked up that last time.
Curse you M11x for being so darn good looking! Seriously, if anyone can tell me there is another 11 - 13" laptop out there that has hardware on par with this one, costs less than $800, and doesn't look like every other laptop, this one will be going back to Dell by the weekend.

Sorry. There is nothing else in the hardware, size, and looks category thats even close.

You get a vintage one or an i3/i7 ?

I have had no problems at all with mine. Maybe you downloaded something like a virus that got your little guy sick. Why dont you restore using the image they provided.
I am waiting to get my blueray drive to burn my XP image and start dual booting, movie watching, letting my son play games.
    Maybe you downloaded a virus.

I keep comparing the screen brightness with other laptops So far this laptop is brighter, or about the same or slightly dimmer however only once was it noticebly dimmer and I estimate ithat was only 10-11 percent dimmer.

Another huge benefit of this laptop is the ability to overclock.

I just started overclocking and was able to 166 run the IntelBurn test at the max setting for my i7 for 20 runs.

It was simple. Go to bios and set it at 166, save and close.

I dont know of any other laptop that make this so easy.

    I really love this machine.

I have a M11x r1 with a 500gb Momentus XT, and I had the stutter fail problem until I upgraded the bios to D24 (the latest, I might have the wrong code there)

I get a full out freeze every .... couple of weeks? .... still that might be attributable to the drive. I wouldn't buy it again, honestly, it was deeply frustrating.
