I don't see that option under view.
-
Then you don't have one of the newer drivers installed. 258.96 with the modded inf is what most people are using.
-
sorry just to clarify, if using the current dell stock drivers 257.30, are all the issues with games not kicking in with high performance graphics still a problem? even if they don't the adding on the white list should solve them? Any reason to upgrade to the 258.96 modded drivers? Is there any option to leave GPU on all the time just like FnF6 switch in the R1?
Thanks -
I am having troubles getting the dedicated graphics card to kick in. I have the i7 model currently using 258.96 with the modded inf drivers. I tried white listing it but it still says Intel HD graphics in the task bar when I run the game. I'm positive that I chose the correct .exe file since I found it using the task manager then located the process.
Edit: Haha, I realized that I have to enable the option in the view menu in the control panel...It's all good now -

Need some help getting the 335m to kick in. I white listed my game (Sim City 4) and in my taskbar, under Nvidia GPU Activity, it still says "none". Im getting really crappy frame rates right now (anywhere from 5-25fps)
-
OK, using everything at stock currently. Do not want to update as I do play bc2 considerably.
However thus far I've been impressed. All the games I have tried thus far have auto kicked in the 335. However I'm having an ossie with Mass Effect (Steam). It simply starts and then disappears. Tried to manually set it to use the 335 with no luck.
Just appears to launch to then "poof" gone.
Any pointers, much appreciated.
EDIT - Run Steam as administrator, almost too obvious. -
Townfries, run your game and start task manager and look for the actual instance of your game in the processes tab. The go to nvidia control panel and make sure you have the same .exe in the whitelist- I notice that with some games, the .exe you find in the game folder isn't actually the one that the game uses when you launch it. It's pretty weird. Sometimes the .exe you want is buried in a folder or two in your game's directory, so you can do a search if you need to.
I noticed this while assigning different alienfx profiles to some games, eg starcraft 2. -
Darkgen I just bought mass effect on steam, I am using the modded whql 258.96 drivers and it works fine, GPU being used.
It's pretty annoying that BC2 or rather punkbuster won't work properly with the new drivers. I stopped trying to play BC2 because every other game works perfectly! Send them a complaint too. -
I even had it open the file location for me.

I have the m11x (R2) with i7 CPU and noticed that Company of Heroes and Starcraft 2 were very slow. In COH was getting average of 20 fps (7 to 40 fps range) with lowest detail at 1280x720 (low resolution).
I used the YouTube instructions on how to add games to the 335M GPU whitelist, and confirmed after a reboot that the games were in fact on the whitelist, but the games were still slow.
The next thing I tried was force ALL applications to use only 335M. This resulted in a massive increase in framerate. Company of heroes now scores 65 fps on lowest detail and 45 fps (24 to 60 fps range) on maximum detail.
Lessons learned:
1. Optimus does not work as it should in the m11x r2.
2. The entire computer sometimes needs to be forced to use 335m GPU in order to play a game.
3. This explains why so many m11x R2 owners are reporting slow fps on some games - they are actually just using their integrated intel GMA graphics!
Also, I am using all the standard downloadable drivers from the dell alienware website. The computer had a clean install into a 7200rpm mechanical hard drive using the standard Alienware Win7 64-bit Home Premium DVD.
I will try the modified latest drivers (v258.96) later tonight. -
Wait, what do you mean, "Force All Applications."
Do you mean add everything on the computer to use the GPU?
Strange....
In any case, what drivers are you using?
I have set SC2 to run on the GPU and I average about 35 FPS with all medium settings.
I am using those 258.96 drivers. -

Also, Portal is so washed out in color. -
Lol at this application
Actually tat AVP.exe is kaspersky internet security/Anti Virus but dunno the whitelist put like that =.=ll
Btw, how to add steam game into the optimus? I tried create the shortcut for Portal but it doesn't create out with .exe file to the desktop. It's something like URL.
Thanks.Attached Files:

try the steam.exe or hl.exe file
-
steam.exe already added there but i getting good fps & didn't face any lagging during the gaming. However, when i launch the Portal game, it will mention that i'm still using Integrated graphic card.

I am having difficulty getting Oblivion (via Steam) to be recognized. I pointed to the executable and set it to nVidia and applied the changes. It seems to have accepted it, but Oblivion still thinks the Intel GPU is primary.
Any thoughts? -
I should get my R2 this week and i am quite worried about Optimus seems pretty confusing.
-
It's really not any more complicated than what you see in the video.
-
I have to be honest, since instaling the 258.96 drvs, I've yet to actually need to set up any games to be whitelisted. It seems to know which needs the discrete and which do not. This includes the various games discussed on this thread (source/oblivion/FO3 etc).
Cheers, Paul. -

Solved. - Delete please.

I can't get Simcity 4 to use the GPU, and have tried all the usual things. on 258,96 currently.
-
Figured i'd post in this thread also since nobody had an answer for me in my dedicated thread.
I play Dark Age of Camelot.
The actual service that runs the game is not an .exe file but a .dll. So in task manager when the game is running it shows as game.dll.
So far I have not figured out a way to add game.dll to the white list in nVidia Control panel, so the only way I can get the game to use the GPU is to change the driver settings under global to "High Performance".
But then I have to change it back or suffer poor battery life.
Any solutions? -
Figured I'd ask here. Using the GPU Activity monitor, I noticed that my dedicated video card doesn't turn on when I play flash games (like on newgrounds or kongregate) but it does work for youtube videos. Im using the 259.47 video drivers and Flash 10.1 r82. Anybody else have this problem, or any ideas on how to fix it ? Thanks

M11xr2 newbie here, using 257 driver from dell, how can you tell whether nvidia or intel is on? my CCS getting about 80fps but TF2 is only 11fps, anyone got this issue before?
-
The newer Nvidia drivers come with a taskbar icon that shows you what is actively using the GPU. These drivers appear to be a favorate at the moment. You have to enable the taskbar icon from the NVIDIA Display Settings, View menu. -
Hey guys I'm a newbie
but I thought that the reason that Nvidia optimus was
here was so that it switches the graphics AUTOMATICALLY
from integrated to discrete graphics so when your not playing a game it goes
to integrated graphics and when you are playing a game it changes to discrete
graphics automatically. -
Automatically... if the game (exe) is in the whitelist
Some of the older drivers need you to add the game as the list was not as comprehensive. -
also, i can't seem to see my nvidia card in the device manager menu (is this because of optimus?)... i remember my c2d model you could switch manually between the intel and nvidia using ctrl shift f6. i'm downloading the update for the card (version 258.96 for gt335m windows 64 bit).
i heard gta 4 is badly coded or whatever but still, its a 2 year old game and this has an i7 and 1gb graphics, i'm expecting it to run smoothly on medium settings (which is only using up 400/987mb of card memory)
i really like this comp but i'm starting to want an alienware desktop and a cheap netbook instead. -
When in the NVIDIA control panel, go to the top left and click on view, then check the box marked * Add run with graphics processor blah blah blah*
Then go to your game right click on it and go to *run with graphics processor > and pick NVIDIA processor*
Hope this works -
i have a question, if i want to add world of warcraft to my whitelist, do i add launcher.exe or wow.exe?
-
add wow.exe
-
White listing the game launcher for any game is never going to work. That includes Steam too. The game's executable is what needs to be white listed.
-
I hate to dig this thread up, but I can't seem to whitelist Firefox, I try to add or type the .exe into the whitelist, however it doesn't want to add firefox.
Is there anyway I can whitelist firefox so I can have it use the Intel Card? -
Still can't figure out how to whitelist gta 4 through steam.. this shouldn't be this hard. I buy an alienware its supposed to be plug and play lol
-
So easy, haha, I knew it when I got r2. Still should say thanks.
