You will not lose the warranty, just you have to put the 160 back in if you have problems and have to RMA it.

I might, did you install it or was it factory installed windows?

If you installed it, it would work.

    Factory it probably would not.

Since when did Newegg start selling m11x for $599, I'm looking at newegg and it is clearly $799 for the spec you provided.

Use code DELLAM11 for $200 off. Good for the first 100 uses. Ripped from SlickDeals.

It'll work - but what do you actually want it for ? Unless you have a specific need for more than 4GB, it won't make any difference at all.

    Too much RAM imo.

    4GB = Gaming
    6GB = Music Production
    8GB = Maya/3D Apps/Heavy Adobe

...4GB is perfectly fine for gaming (unless you're point #2 or #3) ;)

Rawr... My GPU is hitting temps of 64 degrees C when gaming and my CPU tries to catch up with temps of 50-ish. Is something up with my lappie?

Nope, those temps are well within specifications. You don't need to start worrying until things get up to 90c or so - the CULV CPUs are specced to operate at upto 100c, and the GPU is broadly similar.

Hello! Just joined, thought I would say hi. Got a r1 on order, supposed to be here in a week. I had a question though, I keep finding conflicting info on both models, but I can get an r2 i5 for 670, which is only $50 more than the r1 I paid for. However, Ill use it for college alot and battery life is quite important to me, a 15% faster cpu...? Meh. My order is under construction, should I stick with the r1 su7300 or try to get a return and get the r2? I use it alot for linux as well (ubuntu distro). Thanks all!

Hi everyone. Just ordered my M11x to replace my 5 year old HP DV6 that broke a month ago. I've been searching ever since for a laptop I won't regret. I originally was looking at the 14" Envy but the way I wanted it cost $500 more than the Dell. There was also the G51/G53 but also too expensive. I wanted to stay under $1,000. Then I found out about this rig. I fell in love instantly with the AlienFX. I am a sucker for personalization and when I saw a picture of the Stealth Black with green keys, I died and went to heaven. So I pulled the trigger. Tell me if I did okay.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200578067980&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
    $845 shipped brand new
    i5-520
    8gb 800mhz ram
    320gb 7200rpm hd

I mainly bought this laptop for surfing facebook and maybe playing some games like Mass Effect 2 when it gets uber-cheap. I do a lot of Fruityloops music production and I think this rig can handle it with no hiccups. I have a 46" Sony XBR9 LCD that I'll probably hook up to the lappy when I'm in my room. I'll want to take this computer everywhere, it's so cute and tiny lol.

I look forward to chatting with you all about these notebooks :D

Stick with your order, the battery life is sometimes more important than you think when you are useing your computer for work or school. A extra frame per second in a game is not as important as an extra 30min of battery life when you are finnishing a project.

I'm so upset right now. I spent $845 yesterday for my 8gb M11x and I just found a deal to get it for $700 shipped. I feel like an idiot. I hate spending more money than I have to. I guess live and learn, but damn I could have spent $145 on 2 months worth of gas or something...

The i5 will have a slight performance increase but not worth the extra cost as for the battery life I belive the diffrence would be about 45 min more with the su7300.

most of the time my M11x su4100 is used for work and web surfing and skype calls. Have not found the need for a faster cpu but the have always found a greater need for more battery life.

well im going to buy this laptop and i dont know what proccessor i should buy. ill be using it for normal stuff such as word documents and internet and possibly bring it to school. i also want to be able to game on this though. 720p games at high settings such as just cause 2, hot pursuit 2, blackops/mw2, starcraft 2. im the kind of person that if i do something i do it rite and i want the best thing for me. also i live in canada so the core 2 is 800 and the i5 is 1000 so im leaning over to the core 2. im a bit worried about future proofing and i dont want to spend my hard earned money on something that wont last me. please tell me what you think i should get. thanks

Except for a 2 to 3 fps in games they are about the same computer as for futureproofing I will say this: "It's a computer, it has no future" any computer you buy will be at your local computer store will be in stock for about 6 months max.

Buy what you want and can afford, that suits what you need it for. Use your computer for as long as you find it can do the things you want.

Estimate that your computer will be out of date within about 18 months after all you see how soon the R2 came out after the R1 and now we have a thread talking about a R3.

Keep in mind that this has a MIDRANGE Invidia video card in a 11 inch form factor. It's not ment to play at the highest settings.

Although I would recommend the su7300 due to the longer battery life, as this computer does not have a changable battery without taking it apart.

This is a decision that you will have to make for yourself. Have you looked at the WHAT LAPTOP SHOULD I BUY FORUM?.

same here. was doing a fresh install after putting in my new WD black 750Gb and noticed SP1 update? i was put off mostly by the fact that my first set of updates had only 7 windows updates including SP1. normaly its atound 50 or so from what i remember. they must have bundeled a lot of the carp together into SP1.

loving this HDD! its VERY close to feeling like a regular desktop drive. :)

You shouldn't post your service tag on a public forum.

This is a known issue that Dell knows about and is addressing as of late last week.

I note Intel have a Realtek ALC audio driver which is the latest version.

    Realtek ALC Audio driver 6.0.1.6316

This seems to be in the same stream as the Realtek ALC655 HD Audio driver we have on the M11x.

I haven't download it yet, but I will.

If one does install the new driver, then make sure you have a solid restore point or backup before you start. :)

For those living at the fluffy end of danger and have installed Firefox 4.0 RC and Microsoft IE9.0 (64bit), you may like to complete the ensemble and install Adobe Flash player 10.3 Beta.

    Adobe Flash Player 10.3 beta

In the past there have been issues and etc with Adobe flash when using 64bit browsers. This may go some way to keep up with the latest browser 'enhancements'.

Currently using Microsoft Browser IE9.0 (64bit) and have not come across any problems. Disabled Adobe flash in IE9.0 cause I'm not a big fan of adverts.
I haven't had any problems on the M11xR1 with Nvidia enabled and GPU acceleration enabled within IE9.0.

    Hello new guy here,

I'm debating whether or not to go ahead and bite the bullet and get an m11x with an i7 and 8gb of ram. Should I do this or is there going to be an updated version sometime this year? Thanks.

dude honestly just buy the r1 and save 400 dollars...or if you have one dont upgrade its not worth it!! i am playing all my games on an r1 at high or max settings with very decent (25-40) fps and my temps stay in the low 50s even with the gpu and cpu overclocked! Benchmark results for gaming consistently show only around a 5 to 8 fps increase between the lowest and highest end m11x and some games the core2duo actually outperforms the i7! Dont waste your money...

BTW, do we have an official R1 setup picture thread (or am I in it?) Love to see some of your setups for this awesome machine.

    Hey guys, few questions

    1. My budget is $600, base m11x with 4gb ram best laptop I can get?
    2. Faster than dm1z or thinkpad x201e for web browsing and 720p video online?
    3. Can I turn all the lights off? Plan to take it to school.
    4. Hinge issues resolved?
    5. Does it open applications fast? Any bloatware slowing it down?
    6. Two finger scrolling?
    7. Any coupon codes you guys know that can save me money?

Mainly will use it for web browsing, watching videos and listening to music, downloading torrents. I don't game but may start if I get the m11x :). m11x good laptop for my needs? C2D 1.3ghz worries me a bit...

1.it may not be the best laptop you can get...but its a damn good one, and its the top performer for its size.
    2.not sure
    3. yes, can switch all lights on and off with a click.
    4. I ordered mine in the beginning of march and it was shipped with the new, improved hinge.
    5. Has some bloatware, but nothing that cant be uninstalled/disabled. It is very fast as well.
    6. Yup, you have to download the latest update for the touchpad but it enables 2 finger scrolling, pinch to zoom, and other innovative features (like drawing symbols to open programs)
    7. Not sure

It is primarily a gaming machine...it will perform well functioning as a media machine as well. C2d can be overclocked and IMO runs very very well. I can run modern games on high settings with very decent frames. Have had no issues watching movies or multitasking (although if you plan on having many programs running all at once you may want to look for something with a better cpu) I am very satisfied with my machine and have no regrets it is well worth the money i think.

    Good luck!

Spoke with alienware tech support gave them my order number he looked up my model and the individual components cross referenced my hinge model number with updated hinge model number and it was a match.

Will it buffer watching 720p or 1080p videos on youtube? M11x has a beautiful screen and would be a shame if it had trouble with that?

How about having multiple tabs open on ie9 or chrome with ms word files and powerpoint files opening. Will it stutter doing these tasks simultaneously?

I'm ready to order today :D
