Oh I had studio XPS 13 AKA 1340, it was a hot potato POS nightmare X 10. Constant mobo failure and heat issue. Beautiful idea poorly executed. If M11X R2 fan on high = 1340 fan on low I'm a happy camper

 

Yeah the SXPS1340 blowed. Even though it's been almost a year since my purchase I was able to get a full refund which I use to buy the m11x =) That laptop had wayyyy too many problems. I'm just glad that I'm done with it.

Also bad news. My power adapter stopped working! When I plug it into outlet (tried like all the ones in my house) without plugging it into the laptop the blue light onthe power cord does not light up! I hope this is just a power adapter issue and not something my laptop caused. Just my luck >.<

 

Call them now, they will overnight you one, you'll get it no later than tuesday. In the mean time....buy a kingston universal one if u like

Can someone measure their r2 screen and give me the exact measurement, height and width of the screen real estate. I have one ordered, but am having second thoughts now that the envy 14 is out.

 

Damn they didn't put bluetooth in my system. I checked the invoice and its not on the list either. guess i missed that they didn't have it on there. I know i told them while on the phone for bluetooth bummer guess i gotta get a dongle.

 

Call them and tell them your rep confirmed it with you over the phone. Tell them that you are not an idiot and paid 1k for a machine to be future proof You would not forget a *)(*()*)* bluetooth module........................

 

When you order it on the phone, the rep verifies you will be able to check your email in the next four hours because Dell sends an email asking to verify that the parts list was correct, so I don't think that will work.

Done and done =) Called them yesterday. They said I would receive an email containing all the shipping instructions and whatnot but I have yet to get such an email. I will be following up on it today because it sucks to have my laptop sitting in front of me and not be able to use it.

The actual screen without the bezel turns out to be about 10 and 1/16 inches wide and about 5.75 inches tall. I tried to be exact as I could but I didn't want to touch the screen with my scratched up ruler.

Yeah they messed up my order too but it wasn't as a big of a deal as yours. I had a custom nameplate and ended up with a standard one. Oh well. I guess that's what I get for haggling prices with the sales rep lol.

Sure was. But in the end I think it was worth it. i7, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD, and bluetooth for $980 including tax, free shipping. Used the 10% EPP, $100 dollar off coupon, and got 73 dollars off for haggling. Really wanted a 320GB HDD but they couldn't bring it down to a sub $1000 price tag. Ended up contacting a sales rep and getting my order expedited with next business day delivery. It's been a much better purchase experience than my last purchase and hopefully things will stay that way. My new power adapter will be here tomorrow. Hopefully it wasn't my laptop that caused the adapter to bust...

 

I am in the same boat, but I would like to take a look at the envy before I return the m11. I am a bit weary about HP's quality.

 

I have never liked HP. I have gone through MSI, Dell XPS, Asus, HP and hands down the Alienware Build Quality is the best. I use the R1 M11x for everything and will be receiving the R2 tomorrow

 

yes that worrys me as well. Also the other bad thing about the envy 14 is from what I have read about the 17 inch is the cpu will only run at half its speed when un pluged from a wall. If it wasn't for that I would probably ordered one, but that hasn't been proven yet. Most likely it will be the same as the 17 inch though.

I am considering getting the m11x R2, and plan to use it with external monitors. Can anyone tell me if the m11x R2 can be operated with the Lid closed? I know some laptops need the lid left opened for ventilation benefits.

Ugh. I am trying to haggle with Dell and am not getting any traction. They only seem to take $100 off for the EPP coupon that is floating around here. They take that $100 off and don't allow me to apply the other $100 coupon even though the terms of the coupon say it can be combined with other offers.

I am looking at the following config: i7, 4gb, 160gb drive (will swap for larger and faster myself), Gobi AT&T broadband, and bluetooth. I was going to get a 3 year advanced warranty but I don't think the technology in the laptop will hold up for 3 years. I can't get 2 years on EPP according to the rep even though I can price a m11x on the regular Dell site with 2 year advanced.

I get the subtotal of $1333.70, they quote slightly less than that with free shipping. 10% EPP + $100 off. I can get another $125 off by activating the mobile broadband.

Any ideas on haggling? The reps all seem to think that there is no haggling on Alienware.

 

looking forward to seeing what your fps on MOH. I hope this game can be played on max settings with at least a solid 40 frames or better. I know it runs better then bf2bc and even looks better imo.

 

They can do better then that... Trust me.. dont give up keep calling.

I am from Germany. I had the same concerns with the fans loudness as you.
After reading this thread, I also decided to order the M11x R2 i7 500GB HDD.

Please tell us how loud or quiet the fan is when receiving and whats about the fans frequenzy.

Hope you'll get it tomorrow. I odered mine on saturday (26th), still "in progress" the expected delivery date is the 23th of july :-/

EPP stands for Employee Purchase Program.

You need to work for a participating company or be a college student to qualify.

From my understanding the openings of air are on the bottom and front, so I don't think ventilation would be a problem. However, my netbook (gateway) goes on standby whenever I close the lid, but I assume that's a configuration thing.

People have been saying (on this thread) that calling Dell and haggling on the phone would be your best bet for a deep discount. You might be able to get EPP and whatever other discounts apply that you wouldn't be able to combine online.


My question is if it's possible to combine EPP with the free processor upgrade. I haven't seen a way to combine these two offers online, and I don't think they would combine these two MAJOR discounts on the phone unless the reps were allowed...

 

I believe these are the same offers I am trying to combine.

I know some people also mentioned they were getting them to throw in the higher protection plan. I want to get the "advanced" just cause it has the accidental stuff covered.

 

Been trolling around the forum for a bit, and finally took the plunge and ordered! Got a lunar shadow i7, 4gb ram, 320gb hdd for $960 with the EPP coupons. Total discounts were at $313, which seems pretty good to me. With CA taxes and CA environmental fee, came out to $1037 (blasted high tax state!!). Can't wait to get it!

 

I got the same exact config this morning(stealth black instead) and paid $980. I am getting hit with the CA fees too. I think this is a reasonable good deal too and thats why I pulled the trigger. Not sure if you also got the blue tooth option for $20.

2 Quick questions to folks who have actually received their m11x R2s.

1)Does your RAM come in 1 stick 4GB, or 2 sticks of 2Gbs for those who had it configured with 4GB ram. ANy advise on what name brand RAM to buy for an upgrade? Or, if possible, does anyone know the exact brand/model # of the RAM that comes in the laptop?

2) I assume the laptop has firewire 400 standard built-in and not the 800 standard. Judging from the fact that the port has only 4pins. Is it possible in anyway to convert this into a 800 standard through the use of a 6 pin to 4 pin connector cable? The only reason I ask is because I was wondering if I can connect firewire external HDD enclosures to the m11x using the firewire connection as it will be faster than using the USB 2.0 ports. Or does anyone have a better solution?

1) fit and finish is beautiful! the soft rubber material covering laptop is pleasure to touch@

2) Mine has no fitment issue, everything fits perfectly and my WSDF key does not touch the monitor.

3) My hinge is tight, there are no loose or wobblers and there are no pieces sticking out the back.

4) FOr the moment setting up windows and downloading updates the fan is silent, its not even on.. but we shall see later.

5) I been up since 4am.. gotta take a nap and Ill play with it more and report back

I dropped the bluetooth, which explains the $20 diff. I have a BT dongle that I use with my PC if I really need it... Other then that, we can expect fraternal twins in the mail soon! Haha.

So far system is quiet, even during installation of modern warfare 2 game while installing VLC player and installing windows messenger all at same time , and downloading update in the background. The fan was on alright but it is NIGHT and DAY difference from R1's fan. This one is very subdued, you know its on but its by no means bothersome, and only the most half as loud as R1's fan.

My external dvd drive is more than twice louder in operation than R2's fan.

Only concern now is the charger/adapter is pretty warm borderline hot. It won't burn your hand but it is noticeably warmer than R1's charger. They both use the same charger so i'm not sure why this one is hotter. Perhaps R2 just use more juice.

If anyone of you knows how hot old gateway 17 inches FX laptop's charger heat, this one is about 70 to 80% of that temperature, tho not as bad and does not have buzz noise.

I have read somewhere else that the charger of R2 is hot also......

 

sounds good howard.. Hey I got a question. I dont have an external drive. So my plan was to just add the m11x into my network and use my dvd drive on my gaming desktop. That should work to install games right. If so is it going to be slower to install the games that way.

 

Grats on receiving your laptop howard Glad to see the fan meets your expectations and that it has come in perfect condition.

Also I did get a new power adapter and it runs hot if I am just charging. But if I am charging while using my laptop it runs extremely hot to the point where I can't touch it for more than a few seconds.

Didn't the R1 use a 60W adapter while the R2 uses a 90W adapter?

 

Thanks it arrived in prestine condition, even with fan constantly on from doing stuff, I can sleep with it 2 ft away from me and leave it on all night. This is not scientific, but I guarantee you I am one of the most sensitive to noise person you will ever find in your life. I hear anything and everything. I'm actually a 9-1-1 operator, and my job is to hear everything This laptop is decently quiet both gaming and idling and browsing doing office work

Also I think you are right, I stand corrected, R1 does use a 65W power adapter....
