    Title says it all...

Since i checked out this website, i had already ordrered my m11x r2, but, with the hinge problem, i might upgrade my warranty for more extended coverage...

Is there anyway you can upgrade the warranty?

It's cheaper to get an extended warranty when you place the initial order. It might be possible to haggle after the fact though.

there's always waiting for a discount coupon to become available for squaretrade.com - you have a 90 day window to purchase an extended warranty through them... ;)

I'm not really familiar with 3rd party warranties for something like this. Are there any gotchas?

I am in the same position as you, Slickie - I bought an M11x w/basic 1 year warranty, and wanted to upgrade to a 3-year. I considered buying from Dell or from a 3rd party.

Out of the 3rd party suppliers, Squaretrade seemed to be the best. The main "gotcha" that I didn't like about them was that they require you to send your item in to them. If you have Dell's Advanced Protection warranty, then they will send a technician out to your home or office on the next business day for repairs.

Squaretrade also has a coverage limit that acts like an account balance. If you buy $1000 worth of coverage, and use $400 of it, then you have $600 left. If you have any claims that require you to use more than $600, then you will only get the balance of $600.

And any accidental damage claims have a $50 deductible on them. With Dell, it's all covered.

In the end, I saw Squaretrade as selling insurance, whereas Dell was selling a true warranty and repair service. Because of that, I ended up going with Dell.

I paid 5yr warranty on my m11x for about 600 bucks after taxes (nothing fancy, just @home next business day service, which was cheapest warranty option available to me when I bought it) .

The other options like 1-3 yr extention were alot more costly, averaging about 180 bucks a year.

To be fair, I was glad to pay it on a replacement system. (my m11x was replacement for my almost 3yr old m1330.)

Squaretrade is next business day (both ways) if that helps at all...

Hmmm... I believe this depreciation only applies to the warranty repair side of the policy (if it ends up costing them more to fix it than it would to replace it), w/ADH being totally separate?

Squaretrade only charges a $50 deductible on cell phones, not on anything else.

Anyone w/Squaretrade coverage care to share?

Got a PM to respond to this thread. Let's see

    --Shipping:
    --Timing:
--Deductible on accidental damage (laptops specifically):
    --Deductible on regular claims:
--Warranty or Insurance?: They say directly in the service agreement that it isn't insurance, but it seems like they pay out the purchase cost pretty often instead of repairing it, which makes it insurance in my book. Given that the first year's repairs will be done through Dell, I would rather have the cost refunded rather than have it repaired once the warranty with Dell is up, however, since a year from now the same laptop will be cheaper, and there will be other laptops out that I will probably want more. In that sense, it's similar to Dell/Alienware's buyback program, except you get the full amount back instead of a refund. Of course, that's only if it breaks after a year.

--It's true they don't pay more than the cost of the laptop over the lifespan. I'm not sure if ADH is separate.

    Here's their summary:
    Here is the full warranty:

Hmmm, the Worldwide clause is certainly not as good as the Dell warranty. One of my sons was in India last month doing doctoral research and he dropped his laptop - screen broke - Dell had him ship it back to them and they sent it back to INDIA within a week good as new. He signed up for the Advanced and Accidental for 3 yr at time of purchase.

    To the OP:

A Dell rep phoned me a couple of weeks after my M11xR2 arrived and offered the 3yr warranty at a discount. I had not originally purchased any additional warranty and jumped at this second chance to get it.

Anybody have any secrets to bestow upon me in regards to upping the warranty post purchase? I just purchased a refurbished M11x from Dell. I called a few cs phone numbers multiple times and each time I receive different prices albeit all outrageously high. It's almost like Dell reps want me to return my laptop and re-purchase another one with the lower warranty pricing?

Dell reps work on commission. Knowing that is a powerful weapon in your favor.

If you give them a reasonable offer, then I'm sure that one of them will accept it. For example, you can say, "Look, the additional 3-year warranty costs $229 at the time of laptop purchase. If you can sell me that same warranty for $229, then I'll buy it and we can make this happen right now."

If they say no, then call back later and try again.

Worst part of it is he won't know what the best deal is. 390 just might be the best he can get.

I had to pay about 600 after taxes for 5yr extention on basic next business day. Shorter the term, more expensive they were in terms of bang for the buck. I did get a 75 bucks dell coupon out of it btw.

Since I only communicate with my son by email lately, it turns out I got the story wrong. Here's what he just emailed me:

"Oh, I didn't try to repair it from India. I actually broke it just before boarding the flight home. However, Dell has loads of retailers and whatnot in India, so I bet that they would have been able to service me locally. That's just a guess, though.

Here in the U.S., they covered all of the shipping. Even shipped me the box to ship it back to them in!"

Right now she knows the best deal is $390. She has roughly 9 months to beat that.

I bought my m11x 2weeks ago in Australia with 1yr premium service, after I got the laptop and found out the hinge issue, I called Dell Australia to extend it to a 3yr premium. Then I found out I actually can use my service tag to log on the Dell China site. Then I rang Dell China and extend to a 3yr premium and complete cover for just $190AUD...which cost $390 without the complete cover here in Australia. According to quite a few dell sales rep My laptop is Asia/Pacific region, so as long as they can found my service tag in their system, I can buy the warranty there.

Any product I feel compelled to buy an extended Warranty on is not worth owning. Which is probably why i will send this back upon receipt.

I have tried calling multiple times and every time I get different prices for all of the warranties. It's so ridiculous that during one call the rep (non-
U.S call center) actually told me that the price would be different every time I called and that she was offering the best price...not so.

From the last call I was told $400 for the 3yr basic plus $300 for the Complete Care...BS! With that money I can just buy an MSI or Sager.

That looks to be where I am going back to as well......Tried 2 Alienwares 17 and 15 Both were send back within an hour of delivery due to issues. Decided on a Netbook....but configured at $500. Dell emails me another outlet coupon again so I check out their minis and land on the M11X....... the mega Netbook.....Win win I thought.

I ordered one at a great price compared to the Netbook I was configuring.....But then read about needing an "extended warranty" because of hinge issues!!! Kind of takes the shine off the great price and for another couple hundred above the M11X refurb with an EW....... I can get a new Sagar 15" with an i 5 540QM/1080P LCd and the 335 graphics...already warrantied for two years. Around $1300 what I paid for the M15X refurbed.

I really decided on a small form factor but after reading DELL'S response from the techs in their own forum I am very wary of Dell solving this issue anytime soon....Just keep replacing LCDs until the one year warranty runs out.....after that ..... So its either buy a $350 Asus EEE or A Sagar......or both LOL

Well, if we keep on nagging them for new screens, the replacement costs will keep on going up, and eventually Dell will be forced to actually fix the problem.
Eventually Dell is gonna have to fix it, especially in 5 or so months. When all those back to school M11x computers begin breaking down.

^I dunno. I'm sure they reuse the lcds, so it's only the cost of the screen casing and hinge--which is just a bit of plastic and metal--that they lose each fix. Consider that Dell was willing to ship over 11 million computers, which is most likely more than the M11x will sell, with a faulty motherboard, which is a more expensive piece than the screen case, without fixing the problem. It's definitely possible there will be a fix, but I don't think it's anything close to a sure thing.
