Hi,
Just got a new Samsung U28D590D 28" UHD 4K screen and I'd like to use my Alienware m11x until I get a new machine.
The maximum resolution that the m11x would output through display port was 2560x1440.
Now, theoretically, it should be able to drive a 4k screen given the total pixel count that the graphics card seems to be able to handle.
I plugged in a separate screen to both the HDMI and Display port while having the internal display running. These combined displays gives a larger pixel count than a 4k display.
Here is the math:
So any thoughts as to how I could achieve 4k out of the display port?
width height pixels comment 1920 1080 2073600 HDMI 2560 1440 3686400 Display Port 1366 768 1049088 Internal Screen 6809088 Total 3140 2160 6782400 4k display -26688 Difference
Is there some software that will allow me to force the video card to output 4k resolution?
Thanks.

According to the features page at Nvidia: GeForce GT 540M | Features | GeForce it only supports resolutions up to 2560x1600 unfortunately.

It really has more to do with connector interfaces, internal board design, and driver support. The max total pixel count doesn't mean much, and even even a newer integrated Intel GPU can handle displaying 4k just fine.
Unless there is a way to force a custom resolution that high and/or find modded drivers to allow it you probably are stuck. I would guess that the displayport has the highest likelihood of letting you get that high. I could never get HDMI 1.4 to ever go above 33hz (30 hz is the standard rating). -
But I do like change, but only for the better, not the worse.
I just really like the 11.6" form factor, but no one seems to provide anything like this anymore
Output 4k from Alienware m11x R3?
