so uh.. i don't want to sound like an idiot... but am i missing something on the "easy overclocking" feature? i go into the bios, enable the OC and put it on like 160. is it supposed to change the cpu frequency? it still says 1.2ghz in the bios and in windows.
is this normal? or isnt it supposed to overclock the cpu to higher ghz

And make sure to save your settings at the bios screen. -
touche salesman.
tyvm =) -
I just got my I7 and went straight to 160 and it crashed. It would not even post. Currently testing 156 ATM.
-
Mine seems to be happy at 162, haven't had any crashes. at 166 it dies before windows starts.
-
I'm good and stable @ 164. 166 stable with TB switched off - good for open world games
-
I have gone back to stock settings. The overclock seems pointless at the moment. I am getting better benchmark scores with stock settings
-
how do u activate nvidia graphics card? i don't know how to make it run for games
-
@ninja in what particular? games? or cpu scores?
-
sorry guys can someone please give me some detailed instructions on how i can overclock my i7? for example how do i go to the bios screen etc? and change whatevers to 160? lol sorry im pretty bad at this... technologically retarded thanks for your help... and patience

So far I have tested:
3dmark06
Fritz
BFBC2
TF2
WEI
I am yet to do autogk encoding
So far, it has always been either the same or better for the stock clocks. Such a shame -
OK so TB doesn't play nice on gaming benchmarks, but how does it hold up for everyday computing, ...isn't there just a cpu benchmark for performance in windows? I mean 2.6 Ghz on TB has to have SOME advantage right?
Has anyone tried enabling TB while disabling speedstep? -
bump it up

Take a look in the BIOS or the manual - it is pretty simple. F2 to enter BIOS, select Advance, then locate CPU Over-CLock. You can enable or disable overclocking. If enabled, you can choose which speed you want to run at. Most systems won't run at 166, so you'll need to back it down until you find a stable speed. If you don't understand this, I'd suggest you just leave it off or select one of the lower settings. -
Thanks. -
Based on 3dmark06 alone I get around 6900 with turbo off and no OC.
When turned on I was getting around 6400. Weird. -
Left click on NVIDIA Control Panel.
When it opens, hit F1.
Read and learn. The help file is actually pretty good.
At a high level though, you need to ensure that your games are added to the NVIDIA whitelist. You can add programs under the NVIDIA control panel via the Manage 3D settings option and then the Program Settings tab. Make sure you are adding the .EXE file, not the shortcut! -
I think turbo is a weird feature. I want to do some tests to look at the fluctuation DURING gaming.

How do i know if my cpu overclocked @ 166 -w/turbo boost=2.8 GHz ( CPU Z) is stable? what kind of test does it have to pass? thank you very much
lol BSOD -

Erawneila (Brian) - I have a question about the I7 + OC. The I7 cpu, the way it's engineered with turbo boost. The CPU makes a call, depending on utilization, temps, time utilized, and other items whether or not to "boost" and how much to boost. The CPU has a ceiling that it can't go over. So how does the overclocking increase this ceiling when the CPU is specifically designed to give max performance without overclocking. My next question is this... The intel website says that the I7-640um will turbo up to 2.26. What is the max turbo for both cores, not the single core speed(2.26)?
Thanks for your time!
Best Wishes,

Dalli - how many cores? Both cores @2.8 or one core. You should have core 0 and 1. I don't think the hyper threads show but I could be mistaken.
Thanks,

I am pretty sure you get like 2.2Ghz max with both cores and 2.8Ghz max with one core when you overclock and have turboboost enabled.
-
Is that fixable with a patch? =.- -
nothing to be fixed.. that's how turbo boost works.
It has a limited amount of volt it can use and boosting 1 core to max will disable the 2nd one, or evenly boost both less.
That's why disabling turbo boost is interesting for something, specially games that enjoy 2 cores.. where having 1 fast core might not be a better option than two OC'ed slower but at a fixed speed cores.
Need more people to do head on tests with on and off though. in general turbo boost is quite clever. -

What!
You lost me, anyway some CPU's. OC better than others so results will vary. -
Try the ThrottleStop program to see if there is any throttling on the M11x.
-
Or try CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting to monitor Turbo Boost on all cores. I think there are a couple of these utilities, but this is one is from CPUID.
-
just tested mine for the first time. clock to 166 completely no issues. had prime95 running for a couple. everything seems fine.

I get the best 3Dmark06 score with the i7 when I leave turbo on and DO NOT overclock the CPU. I boosted the GPU a little using EVGA Precision and my 3DMark06 score was around 7600.
Overclocking the CPU lowered it for me.
overclocking the i7
