Problem with "Activate Bluetooth Using Wireless Switch"

Yesterday I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional on my m11x system. The system came with Windows 7 Home Premium. The bluetooth in the system worked flawlessly prior to me doing a clean install of Windows. I spent 2 hours on the phone with a Dell rep last night, and neither he not I could figure out the problem. Every time I try to install the bluetooth drivers from the Dell website I get a message saying "activate bluetooth using wireless switch." In the device manager, the bluetooth icon shows a little yellow "!" over it. When I click the icon to check the device it says "device cannot start (code 10)." I am at a complete loss as to what the issue is. I have tried FN+F3 to put the wireless on and off, but that seems to do nothing. I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled, checked the BIOS to ensure that bluetooth was activated and even booted into safe mode to install the drivers; nothing works. I am trying to avoid having a tech come out and do something to my computer when it seems that the issue is software related, as it worked prior to the clean install of Windows.

If anyone has any suggestions at all, they would be greatly appreciated. I am going out of town in just over a week, so I am working on a very slim time table.

It seems like you have done the software side of things, the only thing i could suggest since I have seen it happen to my desktop , is open the laptop unplug the BT card, boot up then power down and put it back in and boot up.. I have seen this resolve this same issue on my desktop many times with the same error after reinstallation of software hasnt resolved....

On a side note before physically removing it, did you uninstall the software, reboot into bios and switch it off, reboot to windows, then reboot to bios re-enable it, then reinstall it and see if that works?

Last night on the phone with the Dell rep I took out the battery and held the power button down for 15 seconds and rebooted, but that did nothing. Your second suggestion I have not tried yet and will do so when I get home this afternoon.

Just fyi, doing the battery trick is not the same as removing the BT card, booting and reseating it..

 

Ah, misread what you stated. I will try taking out the BT card as a last resort. Trying to avoid opening the machine, since it really seems like a software issue since it was working just prior to me reinstalling Windows.

 

It is very unlikely your hardware is broken if all you did was a fresh windows install.

The device cannot start problem you describe is usually a driver issue

Is there some kind of dell restore disk you can use to put it back the way it was and see if it works again?

If it does I think you can upgrade win7 without installing in just a few minutes, check out Upgrade to another edition of Windows 7 by using Windows Anytime Upgrade

 

I had this problem before. what i did to fix is was unzip the bluetooth drivers go to c:/ dell drivers instead of running setup install one of the packages and it will flash your bluetooth firmware and turn on your bluetooth again hope this helps. sorry can't give you details because i'm on my blackberry

Okay I got it now.
Step 1 : unzip dell bluetooth driver then exit installation.
step 2 : go to c:/dell drivers folder
step 3 : go to win64 and use installer in svcpack

that should reinstall your bluetooth firmware and everything should work again. Hope this helps

 

Umm... press the wireless button on the top right side of the keyboard... its one of the touch sensative buttons. The wireless On/Off switch also controls the Bluetooth module.

Thank you! Your fix resolved the problem. Flashing the firmware seemed to kick the Bluetooth back into gear. Thank you so much!!!!!

I've Dell XPS 16, I'm having the same problem.

I tried to setup the bluetooth driver, it says activate bluetooth using wireless switch. I done that but no use.

I tired nguyenxhoang but it says connect the correct device. Mine system is bought in India. Now I'm in UK.

Any advices welcome.


P.S. few days before I got a message like "Bluetooth stack COM server has stopped "

 

I have a Dell Inspirion M5010. I have followed Oblivion426's instructions but am running into a problem

When running the installer it asks for me to supply a DFU file so I use the DFU file that is found inside the same folder as the installer. But it says I have to connect the proper device for it to work

Anyone had that issue that can help me?

 

I'm having the same problem, the DFU mode program tells me that it's not for my Bluetooth or something..

Is it possible that my R1 does not have Bluetooth at all? Was it an add-on option?

The 2 indications I have that make me think my laptop does have bluetooth are

01. It was enabled in BIOS
02. The first time I got my laptop online Dell Support Center sent me a notification saying I needed to update my bluetooth drivers

 

Well the 1 indication that will tell you for sure is the device manager. If bluetooth shows up there, or a device with a yellow "!" with the bluetooth ID, then you have it. If nothing shows up and all of your drivers are installed then it looks like you don't have it.

 

If the FN+F3 wireless switch does not work and there is no bluetooth icon on the lower right corner where the applications run...

1) check bios to make sure it's on

2) uninstall the bluetooth driver and software (this may take out your wireless also so have the drivers handy )

3) reboot (optional: disable bluetooth, reboot enable it)

4) reinstall the driver software from dell.

5) if the "activate with wireless switch" is not activating, cancel installation.

6) go to c:/dell drivers and into the weird strand of numbers that is the dell folder containing the bluetooth driver. Go into the 64 (if you're six four) folder, run the installer, and load the .dfu file that is in the same folder of the installer when it asks you to.

7) If that fails to detect the bluetooth, and device manager does not show a bluetooth device detected, then a fresh install of windows will fix it in most cases.

This is assuming you have bluetooth installed and bluetooth has worked in the past.

 

Okay i'm thinking my R1 (base model) just doesn't have bluetooth installed..

If I want to add it in, is it a matter of replacing the Wifi card with say, an Intel card that has the BT module on the card as well?

 

I have tried nguyenxhoang method but it says I don't have a matching Bluetooth device for the DFU image file. I'm 100% sure I have Bluetooth, because I have used it with another phone. Help?

 

Re-format is the only way at this time assuming the hardware did not fail, which it probably didn't. If you re-format and it fixes the problem, please let us know.

 

I'm having the same issue. I'm not particularly sure when my bluetooth stopped working, but I know it used to. I also have an Alienware M11xR2 laptop and I couldn't follow through with the regular bluetooth installation because there is no "switch" for my bluetooth.
When I right click my laptop in device manager and click on bluetooth options, nothing happens.
I've gone into BIOS and turned bluetooth off, then restarted and turned it back on.
I'd love to handle this without reformatting... and opening the machine would void my warranty. So, if anyone solves this, please let me know!

 

I fixed it
Step 1: Go to Device Manager
Step 2: Right click on your computer name, hit add legacy hardware
Step 3: use the option that leads to a list of all hardware
Step 4: click "have disk" in the corner.
Step 5: Find the folder that you presumably already downloaded to try to fix this. The Dell drivers from the other solution to the problem.
Step 6: find one of the bluetooth drivers in there.
Step 7: click ok, let the device manager install all of the drivers.
Step 8: your bluetooth radio should have been reinstalled and back in your device list.


You can uninstall the extra devices you don't need, just be sure to leave the radios installed.

 

Re-Formated, didn't work.

 

Didn't work, but if someone could give the device ID/name of the Bluetooth device then I could choose the already configured drivers from that list. The I have disk doesn't work.

 

If you performed a complete reformat and re-installed from scratch and it's still not working, then it cannot be a software issue.

 

Says the modem cannot be found *error 797*

 

The only way that worked with me is by updating/flashing the bios.

It's a discrete module that gets installed under the keyboard/palmrest. As you can see in my signature, I have one for sale.

 

My friend I'm using Dell Studio 1558 with Windows 7 Ultimate edition, 8GB R.A.M, 500 GB H.D.D, 1GB graphic card ATI Moility Radeon. I've having the same problem with my bluetooth. I've tried the following steps which you have mentioned, however when I try to run "SetupBluetoothDFU.exe" file from the location "C:\dell\drivers\R226746\R226746\Win64\svcpack", it asks me to choose a "DFU Image" file which is there in the SVCPACK itself. Now when I browse and choose it, it's states a message that it's this DFU image file doesn't matches the bluetooth device.

Can you please help and tell me what can I do, to make it work?
