I have a 2 gb flash card that fits into usb stick which I want to use to flash my 256 SSD using the latest firmware from Dell. I was able to extract the files to the cleanly formatted usb drive, and set the boot order to be usb first. When I reboot with the usb drive in, the system just boots into Windows 7. What do I need to do to make the usb drive with the firmware on it bootable?

You can use other more user friendly ways to do this. But I found this guide to be quite useful: How to Make/Create a Bootable USB Flash Disk Windows Vista Installer - UnlockForUs . The bootsect program is a couple of KB's and can be downloaded off the internet, or you can find it in the boot folder on your windows 7 (Vista bleh...:-D) cd or your image. I would say you need to know have an average level of using computers, but most of the instructions are shown quite well to you in the guide. So + rep the guide guy.

There's a program called unetbootin that works like a charm. It's really made for Linux, but works with Windows 7 with no issues as well - just make sure that your disk is formatted NTFS.
