Hey all...im waiting as patiently (as I can) for my new r1 to arrive. Reading alot about the BIOS OC option and BSOD. Just wondering, how likely is it that enabling this feature will not work on my R1. I ordered it with 2gb of RAM but have since bought 2 2gb sticks of 1066 to replace the stock RAM (not sure if this matters). Is it pretty much a guarantee that my machine will not successfully OC, it seems like quite a common problem...![]()

i overclocked the day i received my R1, and it has been 6 weeks now without a BSOD.
-
im pretty sure you can OC no problem, if not i would suggest getting better ram. but your probly just fine.
-
Though I have a problem with mine overclocking I don't think it's a very common problem. Maybe 5-10% of users have trouble, if I had to guess. Try it out of the box, if it isn't stable you have 21 days to return it right? That way you can just get another that won't (hopefully!) have an issue. I'm pretty sure that ram should be fine but try it with the factory installed ram first just to be sure.

@JerseyFresh609
i read in another thread a guy upgraded to better ram and he could OC successfully after that, you could give that a try. -
I just ordered the stock replacement ram from dell...what would be considered better..more?
-
@cryfreedom66
i wouldnt suggest that ram.. this is most likely your best option.

I tried overclocking mine which has 4gb ram and it fails and crashes my machine typically when i use vlc or surf the net after about 15-20 mins, never thought the ram could be the culprit!
-
the ram could definitely be the culprit.
-
What's the difference between this ram and the ram I ordered? -
well id need to see what kind of ram you ordered, but this ram is running at 1333 mhz. and is reported to help another guy in this thread overclock his m11x r2 i7 to 3ghz.
-
Is 4gb of 1333 ram definatly compatible with the r1 mobo?
-
yes it is, the r1 supports 8gb just like the r2
-
-
yeah it is for an r2, but it is possible it could be a ram issue, just gotta wait and see.
-
Just trying to decide if its worth it to return the stock 1066 ram I ordered for the 1333...will I notice a big enough difference for it to be worth the hassle?
-
well if you can overclock with the new ram keep it, if you cant, might think about sending it back. and you wont really notice much difference between ram. you will notice a difference in it if you can overclock, however.
-
will the m11x downclock the 1333 to run @ 1066?
-
found an answer to my own question just in case anyone else wants to know:
"You can install faster RAM if you wish, but neither the older m11x (Core 2 Duo) or the newly announced M11x with the Core i5 or i7 will run RAM over 800 MHz. Neither chipset supports RAM at more than 1066 MHz, and the CPUs are ultra-low voltage and use 800 MHz only.
ALL of the CPUs in these two models are soldered-in -- that is, never upgradeable, if that's a consideration. They're designed for portability, low power consumption and heat output - hence the slower RAM speed." -
I've had my R1 for a little over a month now. I never experience any BSOD in OC mode with 2GB RAM installed (about a week) and PNY 8GB installed for 3 weeks. The only time I experience the BSOD is in hibernation mode; it occurs when waking it up after AC/Battery. I google for answers and it seems to be a common issue with W7?; although I didn't look thoroughly to find a solution yet. For those who do not know what I mean, I will elaborate. When I put my R1 to hibernate (on battery lets say), if I plug it via AC power and wake it up, I will get the BSOD or vice versa. I don't have any issues if I hibernate and wake it up via the same power source (AC or Battery). I also never experience any hardware failures that will create the BSOD; like some other members have encounter. I am using the Nvidia 260.99 / Intel 2020 custom driver. The reason I use the Intel 2020 is because I notice more battery drain with the Intel 2626.
-
yeah you can install the 1333 ram but it will downclock it.
-
so whats the point?
-
My R1 has been overclocked for about 1-2 months now.
no problems what so ever. -
i hope im one of the lucky ones...
-
id like to hear some more peoples results, if you bsod'd or successfully oc'ed
-
well ok, mostly the point is, if you want to do a pin mod or something like that your going to need very strong ram to achieve any better overclocking
