I am wondering about the hinge design difference between R1/R2 and R3.
I noticed how some people refer to R3 hinge as LCD covers parts such as 4FFHC or 40GMX.
I also noticed how some people say R3 hinge design is different with R1/R2, both old and new.

Is R3 hinge design different with the old R1/R2 hinge design and new R1/R2 hinge design?
Unfortunately, I don't have R3 and I don't know anyone near me where I live who use Alienware...

Here are some things that may clarify what I am exactly trying to ask:

Old M11x R1/R2 Hinges = Hinges before March 2011 Hinge Fix Program. Users experienced breaking of hinges.
New M11x R1/R2 Hinges = Hinges that are distributed for FREE. Stronger hinges and equalize hinge gaps.
    M11x R3 Hinges = ???

R3 makes use of Dell's new hinge design which supposedly fixes the hinge problem of the older R1/R2. Not sure if the newer R1/R2 already comes with the new hinge, but Dell offers free replacement to the new hinge design provided you shoulder the shipping costs and stuff.

M11xR3 hinge/LCD attachment is NOT the same as the original M11xR1 or M11xR2 hinge attachment.

Be quite refreshing if NBR members which have been on this forum for some time didn't start threads on this topic when this has been answered tens of times.

What I am trying to ask is whether the newly designed hinges that are provided for free for R1/R2 users with original hinges is the same design with M11x R3 hinge. So R3 hinge design is different with both old and new hinges for R1/R2?
    Different with 4FFHC and 40GMX?

I thought Alienware said that when the new R3 hinge was available that it would be a free upgrade for the R1s and R2s?

Is it a simple swap that we could just order the new hinges and do the swap ourselves or is this something that we are waiting to break and need to have a tech come out and fix?

So sad.. No one can answer my question.
I am assuming that R3 hinge design is the SAME with R1/R2 newly designed hinge.

That is your answer. R3 LCD assembly is what R1/R2 owners are getting now when they have theirs replaced. It's been confirmed here for months.

I spoke to an Alienware Rep today, and the new hinge design wont be available in the UK for a few more weeks.

Should we all start to write slower???

What were you doing here for the last six months??

Batboy says - "The M11xR3 does not use the same hinge design as the R1/R2."

    Batboy IS correct.

The M11xR3 hinge assembly is not the same as the original M11xR1 and M11xR2 hinge assembly!!!!

The M11xR1 and M11xR2 had issues where some hinge assemblies failed.

Thus the M11xR3 LCD monitors were used to replace those in the M11xR1 and M11xR2 which failed.

That's why the replacement solution to ealry M11x (circa 2010) failures took some times as the M11xR3 had to be designed (with new hinge mounts in LCD) before the M11xR1 and M11xR2 could be 'fixed'.

I wish I could reach through the Internet and delicately and lovingly place this note on peoples foreheads... attached with a 6" bridge nail!!!

This thread should be continued here.

K calm down. No need to get so hot tempered with it.
People don't always check every single thread and I've always seen "R1/R2 newly designed hinge" instead of "R3 hinge".
Hinge sticky thread has reach to the point where it is impossible to track every single thread.
