Hello everyone, I am settled on the m11x as my laptop of choice for university. I am still looking at purchasing an r1 for a few reasons.
    1) battery life - it's a given that I want some good battery life for university.
    2) heat - Im going to have this on my lap a lot, and my heat tolerance is poor hahah.
    3) fan nose - I don't want my classmates wanting to kill me because of a loud fan.
    4) price - I'm going to university and I'm from Canada, so good coupons and epp deals are out the door
    5) deals over the r2 - the price dropped $50 the other day for the r1 and there's potential it will go on sale as a back to school promotion.
    6) I play WoW - apparently there seems to be some issues with this game in the r2 version.

Does that sound reasonable? I can afford the r2 but for university would it be smarter to go with the r1 or will I kick myself in the butt later?

    R1 sounds perfect for you.
    1. Battery life - 8 hours (R2 averages about 5 hours)
    2. Heat - Low (R2 has been known to be a bit hotter)
    3. Fan Noise - Not loud at all, just make sure to use the integrated graphics card.
    4. Price - R1 is defiantly friendlier.
    5. Deals over the R2 - Well, if any REALLY good deals pop up, you could cancel your order and just get an the R2.
    6. I pay WoW - Runs the game well.

I second the suggestion of an R1; it's better suited for you given your requests.

    1) How long are your classes going to be each day? Mine were never more than four hours total, meaning even the R2 can make it through each class on a single charge. R1 of course has better battery life, but if you aren't going to use it, well, that's like buying a fast car to drive to work when you're in traffic the whole time.
    2) I don't really notice heat. Actually, it runs at about half the temperature of my last one LOL. People who have had both versions say the R2 gets hotter, though.
    3) Fan noise is actually why I got this laptop. My last HP was way too loud (as you could probably guess from the fact it ran at twice the temperature). If I'm on the internet, playing in Word, etc., the fan will only come on occasionally, and I can't hear it. On battery, it never comes on because the power plans by default switch it to passive cooling (i.e., no fan) to save power--so be prepared for no fan noise :D. (You could also make a plan to use passive cooling on AC if you wanted.) One problem with the R1 is that the fan stays on at full blast when you switch to the 335m then switch back. There's a huge thread about it. Because fan noise was important to me, that is the major reason I didn't get an R1. (Note that you can get the fan to switch off by going into sleep or rebooting, but that is just annoying IMO.)
    4) I'm not from Canada, but with EPP and coupons my I5/320gb hd/bluetooth/4gb ram was $810 shipped.
    5) You just have to watch for deals. I read a paper awhile back charting PC prices over years, and there were two months that were the best price. It was awhile ago I read it, but I believe those two months were April and September. If I'm remembering right, your intuition that there will be a back to school sale should be correct.

i have an r2 and only notice the heat when playing games; for other purposes it stays fairly cool.

My classes run from 8:30 to 4:30 some days... So battery life still seems like a big factor. Also, I love the idea of being able to choose my graphics card, an not rely on an automatic one.

Ya, I think the R1 is for you!
Though as I said before, if any REALLY good deals come along, you could always return it.(I believe you have 21 days from the day you receive it to return it)

I have both the R1 and R2 and must say I really see the R1 as a better machine for college work than the R2.

Only minus for me is the glossy lid compared to the R2's soft touch black.

I love the R2 soft touch ;-). I haven't had the chance to play with the r1 but the r2 is super quick with general windows tasks such as word, excel and steam. I personally went for the faster processor because you can't upgrade it later.

Just my 2 cents, maybe 3.
